Labuschagne, Janke Botha, Chanaaz Prince Picture: SUPPLIED QBBC to host youth boxing tournament to honour veteran boxer SIMTEMBILE MGIDI THE Queenstown Boys Boxing Club (QBBC) will, on March 21, host a youth boxing tournament to honour the late Komani boxing hero Siphiwo Fuma who was a professional Cape bantamweight champion. According to QBBC manager Mabhuti Mapeyi, Fuma won 20 fights, lost 12 with no draws in his professional career as a bantamweight b o x e r. Mapeyi, who is the manager at the QBBC said, “Fuma fought his first professional fight on July 29 1978, but started as an amateur boxer in 1960. Two years later, after turning professional, he became the Cape bantamweight champion (the Eastern Cape was called the Cape back then). “According to his statistics, he was a good boxer. The way they played the sport in those days they took it very seriously without being paid much. When we went to watch at the showgrounds (now the Nonesi Mall), we would witness him fill the stadium with spectators.” Mapeyi said the youth of today could learn a lot from Fuma. They had invited Komani boxing veterans to say a few words on who this boxer was. He said this was something very big and important – not only in boxing in Komani, but for the history of Komani as a whole. However, they had battled to get funding for the tournament. “We have invited people from Cala, Linge, Sada, Thambo Village and QBBC to participate in the tournament. We are trying to bring boxing to the rural areas. Thambo Village Boxing Club has been around for a while and in Lady Frere there are rural areas, called Bengu and Ezinqothu, where we hosted tournaments to revive boxing last year,” Mapeyi said. He added that these rural areas were making huge progress and the children showed great determination in the sport which is why they intended to invite them to these tournaments so some depth could be instilled on the boxing scene in the locations, Komani, as well as the rural areas. Recalling memories of Fuma as a boxer, Mapeyi said, “I remember him as a humble person who was disciplined. In the location he had a huge following and was loved dearly because he boxed very well. “He even had a fight with Welile Nkosinkulu. That fight was for the national bantamweight title in 1982 at the Mdantsane Stadium. It had people allegedly on their feet,” Mapeyi said. “ I was not there to see it and when we were told he had won, the people were so happy – but he had not won.” Mapeyi believed strongly that Fuma had put Komani on the map. The annual tournament started in 2015 and he asked the business sector to draw closer to the sport. “We will keep looking for sponsors. This year, the QBBC will name all their tournaments after its veteran boxers and we will ask Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality for sponsors as Komani is a haven for boxing and carries a huge amount of history,” Mapeyi said.
