Country line dancing
lessons have become
a popular weekly
event at The Barn at
Okoboji. Last week
about 90 people
showed up to learn
some different steps.
Side Trips
Iowa State University has been celebrating
Greek Week and our freshman son has
done his share to contribute.
He’s been rehearsing for the lip sync
competition for
weeks, including choreography
and costumes.
He sent a picture
shortly before
they were ready to
compete on Saturday
and I noticed he also
was wearing makeup.
I always knew he
had long eyelashes,
but coated in mascara
they became even
more pronounced.
He also participated
in the polar plunge, but due to the unseasonable
weather, the event was moved
indoors and involved jumping into a
swimming pool. Somehow the efforts to
raise money for a philanthropic cause become
less motivating if the “polar”portion
is an indoor pool.
Tonight he called for just a few minutes
as he was on his way to the fraternity house
to bake cookies. “Bake cookies?” I questioned.
That too had something to do with
a service project, though I never learned if
they were planning to sell cookies or give
them away to other houses or community
groups.
I’m curious to see how that went. When
he was younger Sam would occasionally
mix up a batch of chocolate chip cookies
just to eat some of the dough. The baking
part he left to me. I’m curious to hear how
a bunch of college guys did in the kitchen.
Hopefully there was supervision.
Avera Medical Group Lakes Family Practice and
Avera Medical Group Spirit Lake Medical Center
have been providing healthcare for residents in the
Iowa Great Lakes for generations, and are dedicated
to continuing that tradition, even as health reform
demands a different way of providing that care. One
demonstration of that
commitment is by their
Sheila Ove
CARES Carnival
Fundraising and fun for the whole family
The carnival is coming back to
town.
The CARES Carnival is set for
its second go-around at the Dickinson
County Expo Center on Saturday,
April 21 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. in Spirit
Lake.
The event is a fundraiser organized
by Dickinson County CARES (Community
Advocates Ready to Empower
Survivors) with all proceeds being
split between Family Crisis Centers
(FCC) and Centers Against Abuse and
Sexual Assault (CAASA).
Sheila Ove, owner of Grand Occasions
Event Design & Rentals in Spirit
Lake, helped the event get its start and
hopes it will become an annual occurrence.
“A family friend came to us and said
they really wanted to start fundraising
and raising awareness and asked
if we could possibly help them plan
an event,” Ove said “We said ‘yes,’ and
now almost three years later, this is
our second carnival and we hope to
make it an annual event.”
Last year the CARES Carnival raised
about $6,000 for FCC and CAASA,
and the goal this year is to more than
double that amount.
“We felt last year’s carnival was quite
successful. We had great attendance,”
Ove said. “So we’re not changing very
much this time around.”
There will be carnival games like
ring toss and fish bowls, inflatables,
a clown, face painting, dunk tank, DJ,
karaoke, petting zoo and a silent auction.
“Special K’z the Clown will have a
30-minute stage show and put people
in bubbles and she’ll walk around
too. That’s cool,” Ove said. “The petting
zoo was a huge hit, so that will be
back, and the dunk tank will be there
and we think our firemen will be back
so we’ll be dunking firemen.”
The one big change will be in the
format of the carnival games. Last year
visitors paid one dollar per game. This
year it is all free.
“The main reason is we don’t want
to exclude anybody from coming,”
Ove said. “We’re making it free will
donation and hopeful that that can
make it a more community inclusive
event.”
The few aspects of the CARES Carnival
that will require cash will be
the petting zoo, CARES Cafe, and the
silent auction.
The petting zoo charges $1 for a bag
of food to feed the animals. CARES
Cafe will have a simple menu with
things like walking tacos, sandwiches
and soda. Five dollars will get a carnival-goer
a sandwich, chips and a
soda. There will also be mini donuts,
popcorn and cotton candy available
during the carnival.
Ove said they are still accepting donation
for the silent auction as well. It
will take place from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
And again, all proceeds will benefit
FCC and CAASA.
Interspersed between the game
booths this year will also be informational
booths set up by FCC, CAASA,
CARES, Bikers Against Child Abuse
(BACA) and perhaps a few more.
“The carnival is definitely a driver
in giving the community more information
about the services that are
available,” Ove said. “If anyone knows
someone who’s a victim of abuse,
they know it’s life altering. Help us
The second annual CARES Carnival
will be held from 11 a.m.-3
p.m. on Saturday, April 21, at the
Dickinson County Expo Center in
Spirit Lake. PHOTOS SUBMITTED
help our community. It’s not something
that’s comfortable to talk about,
but we’ll counter that with an event
that’s nothing but fun, a totally fun
day.”
Flyers will be sent out to all area
schools including Spirit Lake, Graettinger-Terril,
Harris-Lake Park, Okoboji
and Estherville Lincoln Central,
so Ove hopes to see plenty of families
come by for an afternoon of fun and
games.
“Who doesn’t like a carnival,” Ove
said. “There’s no entry or ticket fees,
it’s free will donation for a great cause
and you can have a fun afternoon
with your family.” F
Falling in
‘The Bridges of
Madison County’
onstage in Spencer
Love
The Spencer Community Theatre
is offering up their last show of
the season.
They’ll be bringing the musical
version of “The Bridges of Madison
County” on April 20-22, 27-29.
The show tells the story of Francesca
Johnson who lives in Winterset, IA,
but she was born and raised in Italy.
She has a husband, Bud, and two children,
who are taking off to attend the
national 4-H show where Francesca’s
daughter, Carolyn, will be showing
her prize steer.
While Francesca is about to enjoy a
weekend at home by herself, a pickup
pulls into the drive.
The pickup holds National Geographic
photographer Robert Kincaid.
He’s searching out and photographing
the famous covered bridges of
Madison County.
Francesca offers to help him find
the Roseman Bridge, which is a bridge
he has had trouble locating.
As the two spend more time together
over just a few days, Francesca
and Robert fall in love.
Francesca is faced with a decision.
Leave her family to be with the love
of her life or stay with her family who
she also loves. I’m not going to spoil
the ending, so you’ll have to go see the
show.
This musical will be the final show
in Spencer Community Theatre’s 58th
season and it’s one you aren’t going to
want to miss. F
RYLAN HOWE | STAFF WRITER
I’ve been dancing a
long time. I just love it.
Becky Dewey
Dance the night away
Bring your boots to the Barn for country dance lessons
Walk into The Barn at Okoboji
on a Thursday evening and
you’ll hear them before you
see them. Stomps, steps, some clapping
and country music emanates
from upstairs.
That’s because each Thursday from
7-9 p.m. the Barn hosts Country
Dance Lessons.
Becky Dewey of Pocahontas drives
up each week to guide regulars and
newcomers through the steps and get
everyone on the same page for a footstomping
good time.
Dewey first started to learn line
dancing in Las Vegas in the early
1980s.
“I’ve been dancing a long time,”
Dewey said. “I just love it.”
She began teaching classes herself in
1992 in Pocahontas. There were classes
in a restaurant building and night
courses at a college gym. And just as
her teaching days seemed to begin to
wind down, she got right back into it
by almost pure providence.
“We went to a county dance in
Dubuque and had a blast. I told my
sister then that I had to get back into
teaching — that’s what I love,” Dewey
said. “And the next morning I got a
call asking if I’d come to Humboldt to
teach classes.”
Eventually the dance steps would
lead Dewey to Okoboji.
She taught a group some dances
during the Barn’s grand opening two
years ago, and came back for their first
year anniversary last summer.
Around September the weekly
Thursday Country Dance Lessons
began. At first maybe 15-20 people
attended, but the line dancing fun was
not to be contained. Every week a few
more people came and the most recent
dance saw about 90 people pack
the barn.
“After the first of the year I don’t
know if it was winter blues or what
but it steadily grew each time. There’s
obviously been a need for it and
people have told me they’d been
wanting something like this,” Dewey
said. “I’ve been just flabbergasted and
it’s just been mostly word of mouth.
It’s a phenomenal bunch of people.
They all want to learn and are willing
to help each other out.”
Learning line dances is exactly what
she would like the next generation to
do.
“I want them to learn and get in
there and enjoy it as much as I do,”
Dewey said. “Then when they’re my
age they can still do all the same steps,
they may just call the dance by a different
name. It’s just so much fun and
it’s why I drive 90 miles to do it.”
Dewey’s enthusiasm has certainly
caught on with the crowd, regardless
of age or line dancing experience.
She recalled one young participant
who enjoyed it so much that the next
week he came back with parents,
grandparents and an aunt all in tow.
The resulting mix of ages — Dewey
noted that most weeks participants
range from 16-80 years old — makes
for a wonderful experience for everyone.
Each week Dewey typically covers
the steps for a song a few times without
music, then everyone tries it out
to a song. For the last half hour so, the
lessons mostly stop, the music keeps
on playing and everyone gets a chance
to perfect their steps.
The plan is for the weekly dances to
continue through April and May for
sure. Plans for future country dance
lessons will be revisited as the summer
season gets into full swing.
In the meantime, Dewey encourages
everyone to come have some fun
and give country dance lessons a try.
“It’s a great place, very fun up there
at the Barn,” Dewey said. “Everyone
can come up, enjoy themselves, enjoy
the music, get in the middle of it all
and have some fun.” F
Take a
guess
Nature Center hosts Earth
Day trivia night April 20
Question: Who loves trivia?
If you do, then the Dickinson
County Nature Center is
offering up a night of entertainment
just for you.
To celebrate Earth Day, they’ll be
hosting a trivia night to test people’s
knowledge about this planet we all
call home.
The Earth Day Celebration Trivia
night will start at 6:30 p.m. Friday,
April 20, at the Dickinson County
Nature Center.
“Through the years, we’ve celebrated
Earth Day week in a lot of different
ways, and this year we’re excited to try
something new with a family-friendly
trivia night competition hosted in our
new Pollinator Paradise addition at
the nature center,” said Kiley Roth,
community relations coordinator for
the Dickinson County Conservation
Board.
Teams of two to six people can either
register in advance of the Trivia
Night or they can register at the event.
The doors open at 6 p.m.
Trivia Night will include a number
of different rounds that will each
feature 10 questions. The rounds will
have themes such as outdoor recreation,
nature photo identification,
earth science, Iowa history, sound clip
identification and famous environmentalists.
“Our trivia night questions will
feature a wide variety of topics about
nature, the outdoors, science, animals,
plants and so much more,” Roth said.
“We think testing people’s knowledge
about everything in the environment
is a great way to celebrate Earth Day,
because even if you don’t know the
answers you’ll learn a lot and have fun
participating.”
But don’t worry if you aren’t an eco
buff.
“Even those who don’t consider
themselves environmental experts or
conservationists can participate,” Roth
said. “We’ll have questions about
camping, kayaking, hunting, fishing,
birds, Native Americans, weather and
so much more. Anyone can participate.”
In between the trivia rounds short
breaks will be held and environmental
education coordinator Bryanna
Kuhlman and naturalist Ashley Hansen
will lead three kids challenges.
The kids will be able to dress the
naturalists up as bugs, participate
in an animal movement relay and
earn some prizes. For those kids who
might lose interest in the trivia part of
the night, there will be coloring pages
and toys available to help keep them
entertained.
Adults can enjoy beer and wine
from West O and Little Swan Lake
Winery if they purchase a souvenir
glass for $5.
Prizes will be awarded to the winners
of each round throughout the
night and to the overall top three
teams after all the rounds are finished.
Trivia Night will be something different
for the Nature Center.
“We have never done a trivia night
before, and I think all the staff are excited
to try something new. We’ve had
a lot of fun collecting amazing prizes
from generous businesses and putting
together all the questions. Some of
the questions might stump you, so get
ready to test your brain! This will also
be the first event that we hold in the
new Pollinator Paradise addition to
the Dickinson County Nature Center,
and we’re looking forward to people
getting to see this gorgeous new part
of the building and hearing about our
plans for the exhibits in the new addition,”
Roth said. F
