GUIDING ASPIRATION ENHACE VISIBILITY AND IMPACT THROUGH GLOBAL ENGAGEMENT “UTA will engage with communities and issues on local, national, and international scales, becoming the ‘go-to’ institution for thought leadership and knowledge.” UTA CHINA ALUMNI MAKING AN IMPACT UTA has agreements approved by the Chinese Ministry of Education with three Chinese universities—two of them among the top 10 in China, in X’ian and Shanghai— to offer Executive MBA programs to rising Chinese executives and leaders. Close to 3,000 UTA graduates now hold key leadership positions in the Chinese government, multinational corporations, and industries such as banking, oil, steel, transportation, and nuclear energy. Chinese UTA alumni include the chief financial officer of McDonalds China, the president of the China Railway Group, the executive vice president of Shanghai Electric, and the president and senior economist of the China Nuclear Energy Corporation, among many others. UTA has also successfully expanded the EMBA program to Taiwan, which has produced close to 400 UTA graduates, and is considering expanding to other Southeast Asian nations. NEW VICE PROVOST FOR INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS The University recently hired Curtis Arthur Andressen as its first vice provost for international affairs. The new position in the Office of the Provost was created to bolster UTA’s international efforts. In his capacity as vice provost, Dr. Andressen—who comes to UTA from Qatar University, where he served as the Marubeni Chair in Social Sciences—will be responsible for the development and oversight of University initiatives and global partnerships. He will also work to advance the international profile and reputation of the University by enhancing the number and quality of international students attending UTA, attracting distinguished international faculty and staff, collaborating with global education units, and developing a wide array of strategic partnerships that promote globalization within the UTA community. UTA’S SUSTAINABILITY WINTER SCHOOL Twenty countries were represented at the 2018 winter school run by UTA’s Solid Waste Institute for Sustainability. (Its director, Professor Sahadat Hossain, is pictured at right.) This brings global enrollment during the school’s short history to 62 countries, whose representatives take the knowledge learned here at UTA and employ it back home. Subjects included landfill design and management, waste economics, and landfill gas-toenergy technology. Attendees also enjoyed a panel discussion on sustainable waste management that included officials from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, the EPA, the World Bank, and the International Solid Waste Association.

GUIDING ASPIRATION LEAD IN CREATIVITY, INNOVATION, AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP “UTA will be distinguished by its unwavering commitment to inquiry, high-impact exploration, scholarship, and achievement through encouraging a culture of innovation, entrepreneurship, and creativity.” NURTURING STUDENT ENTREPRENEURS UTA’s EpICMavs (Entrepreneurial, Innovative, Collaborative) Entrepreneurship Workshops is celebrating its third anniversary. Begun in fall 2015 in partnership with TechFW, the 12-week workshop series is held in the StartUp Lounge during the fall and spring semesters. There, students, faculty, staff, and community members interested in entrepreneurship discuss topics related to starting and building a business. Topics for the sessions have included identifying your passion, building a team, marketing, crafting a pitch, and company structure. More than 400 people have participated in EpICMavs or “StartUp Lounge” activities, with at least 15 student-led startups created over just the past year. Some examples of student startups developed through EpICMavs include: SOLGRO: Founded by Tyler Sickels, SolGro is developing patented technology created at UTA by Professor Wei Chen. Its products integrate nanophosphor technology that helps turn sunlight into energy that plants can use more efficiently to increase growth. FADE: Founded by Farhaj Mayan, FADE is a men’s lifestyle app that helps men keep up with the latest trends in haircare, grooming, and fashion, and book appointments with local stylists. GOZOVA: This app works like Uber for people who need trucks to move or deliver large appliances. Company founders are Goran Krndija (’17 B.B.A., Management), computer science senior Cameron Moreau, and James Staud (’15 B.S., Computer Engineering). UTA’S SHARK TANK The College of Business is offering students the opportunity to share their entrepreneurial ideas at Pitch UTA, a Shark Tankstyle competition. Now in its second year, Pitch UTA is made possible through a gift from Tim Matteus. Contestants have just two minutes to share their concept to a panel of judges, investors, and venture capitalists (pictured). Finalists compete for a $10,000 prize and the opportunity to turn their startup into a reality.
