News Surrey tennis Surrey Meritorious Awards 2017 Surrey Tennis presented four Meritorious Awards in 2017 to pay tribute to the contribution of volunteers to tennis in Surrey. Peter Risdon Woodfield Grove Tennis Club The Chairman of Woodfield Grove, Peter Risdon, was honoured on Club Finals Day, Saturday 24 June, when he was presented with the prestigious Tennis Surrey Meritorious Award by the County’s Honorary Chairman, David Cianfarani. At 4pm precisely Champagne was served and Peter, lured from his post behind the bar, was presented with a magnificent glass decanter by David, who said: “Peter is the 21st recipient of this special award that recognises the selfless contribution that he has made to Woodfield Grove Tennis Club since he was a child. “He has served as Chairman for over 30 years, represented the club countless times on the court, won 37 titles and had the centre court named in his honour. That isn’t enough, though, to recognise your great contribution, and it gives me great pleasure to present the Tennis Surrey Meritorious Award to you on this very special day.” fundraiser and racket-stringer, Chris has earned the universal respect and affection of members. Among the many accolades heaped on him, were: “One of the most inspiring people I have met”; and “Chris is the soul of Priory Park. Many tennis players can thank his enthusiasm and volunteering for their love and enjoyment of the game”. John Prince Carshalton Lawn Tennis Club John Prince was nominated by his Club, Carshalton LTC for a Meritorious Award for outstanding service to the Club and the game. He has been a member of the Club for 54 years, having joined at the age of 16. Chris Chia Priory Park Tennis Club On a sunlit June morning at Priory Park, Kew, Chris Chia (pictured) was presented with a Surrey LTA Meritorious Award in the company of fellow members. The award recognised Chris’s 35 years of dedicated service to the club. John has been President of Carshalton LTC for 16 years and has led bids for lottery funding and raised other funding to help develop the Club. Over the years he has held various Committee positions. He is passionate about his Club and about the game of tennis, always on hand for events and tournaments and is a friend and mentor to many. The presentation of his award took place on 2nd July, during the Club’s Finals Day. The award was a glass decanter, engraved with details of the Meritorious Award. The presentation was made by Deborah Hamlin, a member of the Surrey Tennis Awards Committee. Jack Thynne Banstead Downs Tennis Club Jack Thynne was presented with a Surrey LTA Meritorious Service Award in the category of Volunteer of the Year recognising all he has done in support of tennis at Banstead Downs LTC. The presentation was made at the Club’s Autumn Finals Day on 21st October 2017 by Peter Lane. In making the presentation Peter drew attention to the work done by Jack at the Club, not only in the previous 12 months but over the past 40 years. A former County player, member of the Umpires Association and great supporter of both Surrey and his Club, long may he continue to enjoy his tennis and savour his award, which is justly deserved.
