Garden Halls, London WC1H tp bennett and Maccreanor Lavington Sitting within a historic residential pocket within the Bloomsbury conservation area, a key aim stemming from residents consultations was to ensure good quality amenity outdoor amenity space within the development. Amenity space was provided in two forms: • External courtyards within the development, providing private landscaped areas adjacent the dining halls allowing students to eat, socialise and study; and • Cartwright Gardens, which is an existing private gardens managed by the University. The project completely regenerated the gardens with new gates and pathways improving the permeability; new seating throughout improving social interaction; new planting to improve the biodiversity; and four refurbished tennis courts designed to Sport England standards. As part of its commitment to community engagement the University have now opened the gardens and tennis courts to the public, enlivening a previously underutilised urban amenity. 20 ECOBUILDER - THE SPECIFIER SPRING 2018

Planning History In March 2013 planning was submitted to the London Borough of Camden. Planning consent was granted on the 28th November 2013 following a unanimous members decision. The site is located within the Bloomsbury Conservation Area and consultees include the following: Marchmont Association, Bloomsbury CAAC, Sandwich Street Residents Associations, as well as English Heritage. Following consent, TP Bennett and Macreannor Lavington worked closely with the Camden Design Officers to agree all aspects of the façade design, detail, material and colour selection.
