EDUCATION Droylsden Academy Tameside, Greater Manchester The academy at Droylsden replaces two existing schools, Little Moss Boys School and Droylsden School for Girls. Located on a single site it provides accommodation for 1,200 students aged 11-16 as well as a new 200 place sixth form. The building has been designed to stand as a metaphor for change and setting higher aspirations within the community. This was achieved by redefined the concept of educational design in terms of the facilities provided and the environment created. A conscious decision was made to reduce the level of ownership over teaching and staff spaces, allowing - through space management - learning periods to take place in areas which best facilitate that period’s activity. The design is organised in three main elements: a curved block, a linear block and a central hub. The two storey curved block houses the majority of the teaching and learning spaces and contains four learning zones based on skills - make, idea, test and perform - rather than traditional subject areas.
