The direction of travel

The direction of travel could hardly be clearer. As recently as October 2014, DEFRA, in a written response to a question regarding ‘No Net Loss’ (to biodiversity) confirmed that: - “In England… all public bodies are under a statutory duty to conserve biodiversity”. It went on to quote from the Government’s recent White Paper: - “We will move progressively from net biodiversity loss to net gain, by supporting healthy, well-functioning ecosystems and establishing more coherent ecological networks. Our 2020 mission is to halt overall biodiversity loss, support healthy well-functioning ecosystems and establish coherent ecological networks, with more and better places for nature for the benefit of wildlife and people.” A recent study by the US based Landscape Architecture Foundation (Biodiversity and Planning Design) found “…considerable agreement among scientists that habitat loss and degradation are among the leading causes of global biodiversity decline”. The pressure on the architectural community to address this area is growing fast and innovative solutions are urgently needed if the government’s aims are to be met and the global decline in biodiversity is to be addressed. One such solution comes from Bird Brick Houses. Feedback suggests that the product ticks all the boxes from an architectural perspective, as well as satisfying the likes of Swift Conservation, Action for Swifts and various Bat Groups from the wildlife point of view. The nesting box is adaptable to attract a variety of under pressure UK bird and bat species. Being cast in the shape and size of 4 standard UK bricks, it could not be easier to build into the coursework of a new build – unlike other products, no brick cutting on site is required. The box is delivered to the site with slivers of the self same bricks used in the building, bonded to the front of the box, thereby preserving the desired appearance. A sharp eyed observer merely sees a hole in the wall. A new social housing development which already has house sparrows! The box is deep enough to afford sufficient space to nesting or roosting sparrows, swifts, tits, bats and others, however is not so deep as to breach the cavity. Nor is there any compromise in terms of the structure’s U values – the design and materials used have seen to that. Any (minimal) moisture is allowed into the cavity through drainage holes. Coming in at well under £100 per unit, cost is barely likely to be a factor. A swift box set in stone which although only fitted last Autumn has already seen breeding swifts which bred and fledged successfully. The award winning* team at Bird Brick Houses are passionate experts in the wildlife field. Also on tap in the office are many years of experience in the construction sector; skills which are combined to continually research and refine strategies to optimise take-up and effectiveness of bird and bat homes. Experts on the team work closely with architects to resolve individual questions and where advice is needed, whether involving wildlife or construction issues. The team has a lot to offer the professional community as it seeks to align itself with ever-evolving responsibilities. Bird Brick Houses have won several awards in 2014 Ecobuild “Best Product in Show” and recently in 2015 finalists for the RBS Gogoburn Challenge and Bristol Go Green. Winners of “Build” construction and Engineering award: Most Innovative Construction Wildlife Product in UK 2015. Bird Brick Houses are accredited members of Constructionline.
