SECONDARY-SPECIFIC OFFERS Royal Opera House Project Name Opera in a Day About the Project After the continued success of the Royal Opera House (ROH) Carmen project in primary schools, the Royal Opera House learning team presents Opera in a Day for secondary schools. This day-long event aims to inspire teachers and young people to explore their awareness of opera and to raise the standard of dramatic singing in school. Furthermore, this project can provide secondary schools with a new route into singing through engagement in collaborative performance, by discovering the impact of operatic repertoire and power of working together. The ROH’s La Bohème is an infamous opera in four acts, with music by Giacomo Puccini using a libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa. The opera tells the tragic story of a love affair between a poor poet and an equally poor seamstress in 19th century Paris. Considered risqué for its day, it is now one of the three most popular operas performed in the world. Over the course of a day your students will engage with the music, the characters and the story of Puccini’s Opera La Boheme. Participants will work with a highly qualified ROH Vocal Coach and a stage director to improve singing skills, learn the repertoire, develop skills in stage presentation and develop an understanding of what opera singing is all about: using the whole body and voice for storytelling. Students will also build musical knowledge, explore characterisation, performing skills and gain a sense of self-expression and confidence. The day will finish with a sharing performance of the excerpts that the students have learnt from the opera, alongside their interpretation of the stage setting. This allows the group to work as an opera company would. Please note, if several schools sign up for this offer, there is a possibility to turn this into an inter-school event (if suitable). 109
