SECONDARY-SPECIFIC OFFERS We see Sally try and paper over the cracks and hide the fact she is getting ill again from the people she cares about with disastrous consequences. As Sally’s life spins out of control, she gets more and more trapped by her own depression. She pushes everyone she cares away from her, and even tries to take her own life. The show finishes with Sally explaining that after her unsuccessful suicide attempt, she went through a slow and steady recovery process and she is now ‘not bad, and not bad is pretty damn good’. Suitability KS4-5; themes are most suitable for age 15+. Dates, Location & Format Learning Outcomes Monday 18 March 2019, A Super Happy Story (About Feeling Super Sad) performance at Thameside Theatre, Grays. Afternoon performance, start time TBC. The performance runs for 70 minutes and the post-show talk will follow. Understanding that it’s ok to talk about mental health. Linking to pastoral care and PSHE curriculum through surrounding discussion. Students will also learn about alternative theatre company’s contemporary approaches to theatre production and experience a live production. Teachers will be required to lead an in-school session with the pupils that they will bring to the performance, prior to the performance date. This is so that they can have initial discussions about mental health, and to give the pupils an opportunity to be prepared for the performance that they will see. Other Resources/Support Costs Teachers should encourage pupils to prepare questions for the performance and for Thurrock Mind, who will be having a facilitated discussion about mental health after the performance. Teachers should be prepared to further discuss the show's themes in another in-school session to give the students an opportunity to reflect and respond to what they saw and how they felt. SECONDARY-SPECIFIC OFFERS Victoria & Albert Museum Project Name Shakespeare in a Suitcase About the Project The Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London is the world's largest museum of art, design & performance, housing a permanent collection of over 2.3 million objects. It was founded in 1852 and named after Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. We offer a wide range of gallery tours, practical workshops, exhibition visits, events, screenings and projects for pupils aged from EYFS-KS5 and post-16. Our focus is on the collections and galleries of the V&A and, as the leading museum of art, design and performance, our main curriculum focus is on these three areas, though our primary offer is particularly rich in links to English, history and R.E. As part of the Museum’s Shakespeare Festival which is held at the V&A throughout April, we will be working with a number of schools on a performance project called Shakespeare in a Suitcase. The aim of this project is to introduce schools to Shakespeare-related objects to inspire them to produce performances and re-interpretations of his plays and to give them the opportunity to perform at the Museum to the general public and other schools. The practical limitation applied is that anything the students need to produce their work must fit in a standard, family-sized suitcase. The project follows the following 4 stages: 1. Intro Session: students visit the V&A for a 2 hour session which includes a practical drama workshop and a tour of the V&A galleries which house objects connected to the playwright and his work. The group can come to the first session with a chosen play in mind. Alternatively, they can decide what their focus is after this session. They can use any number of texts, characters or stories from Shakespeare. It can be a play the group have already studied, are currently studying or is new to them. 2. Development: After the intro session, the groups develop their pieces back at school, working towards producing an original piece of performance, that is no longer than 25 minutes when performed. 113
