PRIMARY-SPECIFIC OFFERS Art 4 Thinking Project Name Teaching Primary Art CPD About the Project Over the past twenty-five years, Pete McGuigan has successfully led three large primary schools and run regional and national schools’ action research programmes - promoting creativity and the arts in learning. Currently working to create resources for Art 4 Thinking, Pete believes real progress and success can only be achieved by developing meta-learning capacities, such as thoughtfulness, resilience, resourcefulness, striving for quality, problem solving and working well with others. There is great scope for schools to do really interesting, unusual and exciting work in art as a curriculum subject – and this Teaching Primary Art CPD will give you an opportunity to develop a wide range of ideas and teaching strategies to do so. Whether you are a member of SLT with an interest in visual art, the art subject lead, or a non-specific class teacher wanting to build greater confidence and expertise in teaching art, this half-day CPD could help you get more out of the art curriculum - both in terms of curricular art activities and in overall approaches to teaching and learning. The half day will be broken into several different approaches, outlining: • A practical group making session, with different starting points • Reflection on the processes and consideration of the implications for your classroom • Developing ways of helping children ‘read’ and make sense of art by considering the range and scope of the art we present to them • Helping them engage with art through close looking, asking interesting questions • How to use experiences, existing knowledge and imagination, which will help them to maintain their interest and develop the skills to find out more • developing a clear and systematic approach to teaching art, that helps teachers focus on the range of questions raised when children make their own work - what, why, how, how can it be improved, what if, what next… 62
