"Have before thine eyes the fear of God, and always remember the Ten Commandments of God, -- to love the one and only Lord God with all thy strength; to give no heed to idols, or any other beings, as being lifeless gods, or irrational beings or daemons." But though these Constitutions thus recognize the authority ofthe Decalogue andthe sacred obligation ofthe seventh day, they elevate the Sunday festival in some respects to higher honor than theSabbath, though they claim for it no precept ofthe Scriptures. Thus they say:-- "But keep theSabbath, andthe Lord’s Day festival; because the former is the memorial ofthe creation, andthe latter ofthe resurrection." "For theSabbath is the ceasing ofthe creation, the completion ofthe world, the inquiry after laws, andthe grateful praise to God for the blessings he has bestowed upon men. Provider, the Law-giver, the Cause ofthe resurrection, theFirst-born ofthe whole creation." "So that the Lord’s Day commands us to offer unto thee, O Lord, thanksgiving for all. For this is the grace afforded by thee, which, on account of its greatness, has obscured all other blessings." Tested by his own principles, the writer ofthese Constitutions was far advanced in apostasy; for he held a festival, for which he claimed no divine authority, more honorable than one which he acknowledged to be ordained of God. There could be but one step more in this course, and that would be to set aside the commandment of God for the ordinance of man, and this step was not very long afterward actually taken. One other point should be noticed. It is said:-- "Let the slaves work five days; but on theSabbath day andthe Lord’s Day let them have leisure to go to church for instruction in piety." 557
