Movie We smoked too many

Movie We smoked too many cigarettes. My gut twisted on itself. My lungs were thick. The walls in Miss Tris’ basement were pinkish cinderblock. Couches made a square in the middle of the floor. I was the sober one. I was the one with good judgment. This was not good. “Let’s do something,” Miss Tris said. I shook my head. I wanted to go home. I wanted to sit in a dark room and hide. My nerves quivered. “Let’s go dancing,” Miss Tris said. “I need me some loud music.” “You want to get laid,” Tad said. Miss Tris grinned a feral grin. “That’s going to happen anyway,” she said. Tad laughed. “What do you think?” Tayla asked. She lay on the couch with her head in my lap. My fingers stroked her hair without thought. Just thinking of being in a room with all those people made my fingers flutter. “I can’t drive,” I said. “I can drive,” Tad said. I shook my head. No one here could drive. “The bus,” Miss Tris said. I shook my head. “You need to get out,” she said. “I get out,” I said. Everyone laughed at that. “You’d never leave our room if you had a choice,” Tayla said. She was right. I hated not knowing what was out there. The thought of people nauseated me. The thought of not knowing what people were thinking wrapped my stomach around my spine.

“We have to do something,” Miss Tris said. “I’m positively dying.” “How about a movie?” I asked. It was childish and safe. “A movie!” Tad said. He rushed up the stairs. “Look what you did,” Miss Tris said, half joking. “Now I’m going to have to sit through Fritz the Cat again.” “Jesus,” Tayla said. Neither of them meant any harm, but I felt small anyway. I felt like I’d ruined everything. Again.
