In today’s dynamic business landscape, leaders
are challenged with balancing an abundance of
activities and critical success factors. One area that
is important not to overlook is community outreach
and engagement. By finding a cause or community initiative
that you can truly get behind, you will discover the joy and
fulfillment of leadership at a new level. The benefits are
immeasurable and long-lasting. It takes people who put a
focus on keeping the “human” element forefront in building
community, and who sincerely put joy into their work.
Here in Highland Park, we are blessed with a large and vibrant

time to build communal values and kindle a collective optimism
for their lives and the lives of their neighbors. They use their

Heart-Led Leaders
What was the initial idea, goal
or inspiration that led you to get
involved with these organizations and
the community here in Highland Park?
TD: I live in Highland Park so starting a
business in the community where my wife
and I are raising our two kids and where
we are members at Aitz Hayim Center for
Jewish Living, was an easy choice. I find
Highland Park to be an interesting place,
full of passionate people. The passion of
Highland Park is something that goes in
many different directions, but one of those
is that this is a community that cares deeply
about others as evidenced by so many
philanthropic efforts based in Highland Park.
JL: I learned that my personal economic wellbeing
was fed in two manners – through
the economic income that pays for my
home and living expenses, and through the
psychic income that feeds my emotional and
psychological well-being. My definition of
“psychic income” is the feeling, reward, or
other emotional satisfaction that you get
from your work or other undertakings that
are separate from financial rewards. For me,
psychic income is so important to my overall
sense of well-being. One way I add to my
psychic income is through engagement in
the communities that are important to me
and with organizations that are doing great
things to help our communities.
ND: I was born in Highland Park, went to school
here, and came back home after college to
start my company, Bitter Jester Studios with
two other HPHS alumni Charles Turck and
Daniel Kullman. Our production company
still regularly collaborates with half a dozen
or so other HPHS alums. So, I definitely view
Highland Park as an incredible incubator of
amazing and unique talent and very creative
people. The Bitter Jester Music Festival
here in Highland Park now features over
100 incredible musicians each summer.
Around our 10th anniversary we realized we
needed to get this behemoth, not-for-profit
event out from the banner of our for-profit
company. Thus, the Bitter Jester Foundation
for the Arts was born. The goal is to keep
growing the event into a recognizable and
respected Music Festival that lasts not
just the first four Fridays in June but all
throughout the summer.
EE: Like so many others, I’ve spent most of my
life in Highland Park. I am a Highland Park
‘patriot’ and want us to continue to be the
best community we can be. I consider myself
very fortunate to be able to contribute to
the community. It is truly an honor and a
privilege.
GA: The Lions’ motto is “We Serve”. My
involvement with the Lions Club was based
on the desire to truly volunteer my time
through service in the community.
RF: My first-hand experience with hearing
problems changed the focus of how I wanted
to help people. My father started having
difficulty hearing when he was in his thirties
from rheumatic fever as a kid. Unfortunately,
he didn’t live to see Hearing Health Center
grow to help thousands of people live better
lives, and to see his daughter become the
passionate advocate I am for hearing health,
education and patient care…. but it’s all
because of him.
BL: My parents were involved with Jewish
United Fund for many years, so it was only
natural for me to get involved with JUF
as I was growing up, and I’ve gotten more
involved in it as a way to give back to my
personal community.
RL: When I was in high school, I joined

the United States Holocaust Memorial
Museum’s Teen Committee because I
wanted to get involved in an organization
that was meaningful to me. Throughout
my life, I’ve learned about the Holocaust
through my family, school and having
the many opportunities to hear personal
accounts from survivors. It’s been
important to involve myself with an
organization whose mission was to
safeguard these stories and uphold the
saying “Never Again.”
Speaking specifically as a business
leader, what importance do you put
on cultivating community, and how
do you develop those relationships?
EE: Cultivating community is the bedrock.
I try to treat all people with respect. I
think it helps to have deep roots in the
community, not just the amount of time lived
here, but the genuine commitment to our
success. Whether it’s coaching baseball or
volunteering on a community board, people
respond to others who are earnest and
enthusiastic.
JL: Working to keep HP at the forefront of
engaged civic and philanthropic stewardship
has been, for me and for Highland Park
Bank and Trust, a real benefit. Many of our
bankers live and work in HP and are also
engaged in the community with various
organizations. Inside the bank, my office is
located within the lobby so that I can share
friendly conversation and updates from our
clientele when they come to visit or transact
business. It makes a difference and feeds
that psychic income I spoke of earlier.
ND: Getting the community involved in events
we produce is not only critical it’s meaningful.
I am also a firm believer that sending
customers or clients to your competition is
good for everyone involved. Having multiple
points of sponsorship or support is an
awesome show of community and business
unity.
RF: Each of our five offices is deeply involved
in the communities they serve, a business
priority that has earned us the State of
Illinois Outstanding Audiology Services and
“Hometown Hero” Awards. We are active
members of the Chambers of Commerce
and sponsor “dine with the docs” luncheons,
and free educational seminars and hearing
checkups at community, youth and senior
centers.
GA: It is very important for a business
owner to get immersed in their respective
local communities, outside their own
interest. This helps to cultivate a spirit of
volunteering that assists with the success of
the various organizations that comprise the
fabric of the city. I develop relationships by
applying the motto, “lead by example”, and
work to get others involved in any capacity
possible.
BL: I believe it’s very important to cultivate
community, though it can sometimes be
difficult. I found that it’s best to do so with
a community-based program such as the
Highland Park Chamber of Commerce or
the Highland Park Rotary Club. I’ve found
both to be major contributors in assisting
with developing and fostering community
relationships amongst businesses and
business owners.
RL: It is also essential to create a sense of
community within our business every day.
We strive to create a warm, welcoming
environment for our team members and
customers alike. This year will mark our
60th year in business in Highland Park.

Heart-Led Leaders
Our success would not have been possible
without the community’s support and the
local relationships we’ve developed over the
past 60 years.
What advice would you give on
keeping the inspiration and heart
alive amidst the day-to-day tasks and
hinderances?
EE: For me, when you are focused on the
mission objectives and long-term success of
an organization, the short term takes care
of itself. I generally don’t get discouraged by
daily challenges and conversely, I don’t rest
on any successes. I try to not fear failure,
which is easier to say than do. One of our
family mottos is “play hard, have fun, and
good things will happen.” In other words,
focus on good process, with good partners,
find joy in the work, and hopefully (more
often than not) things will go well.
JL: With stress, get some sleep and try to focus
on the good things you are doing. Also, there
is something oddly comforting in reminding
yourself that “it will all still be there in the
morning.” Recognizing and accepting that the
psychic income I receive from being involved
in the community is a worthwhile endeavor
and worthy of a prominent position in my
life, helps to keep that heart alive. It helps to
center me when other stresses and stressors
are arguing to take priority.
ND: If someone asked me, “Should I start an
event” or, “should I open a business”? I would
answer “no” - ha! It is NOT a pleasant task all
the time. You must be 100% committed to
what you’re doing and that only comes from
heart and inspiration. I don’t know any other
way to do it. At the end of the day, I think the
biggest piece of advice I would give someone
is do not be afraid to ask for help. And do
your best to delegate tasks so that you don’t
find yourself in an early grave.
GA: I sincerely try to approach each day with
paying gratitude to the provisions earned or
bestowed upon me. Also, I believe that each
day’s events and interactions with others
can be better managed if we exude a more
positive and caring attitude, and then be able
to share that spirit to others.
RL: Always have passion for what you do. If
you aren’t passionate about what you’re
doing, it will show in your work. As the
3rd generation of Idlewood Electric, I’m
inspired every day by our employees’
dedication to help our customers. Seeing
our customers satisfied is one of the most
rewarding experiences of our day. While the
everyday tasks are essential, they allow us to
ultimately better serve our customers which
is our number one priority.
TD: Do something you love, and it will not
feel like work. Be a life-long learner. Find a
mentor. Be a mentor. Stay physically fit. Be
part of a community of faith. Know that you
have answers for others and others have
answers for you! Re-evaluate what you are
doing annually and make decisions based on
that.
What are some of the benefits and
rewards you personally see in your
own life that come from the work you
do with these organizations?
RF: I have been told I’ve saved marriages,
minds, and even lives with the work done
by the Hearing Health Center and Fisher
Foundation for Hearing Health. Thirty three
percent of Alzheimer patients were reclassified
after treatment with hearing aids
and 100% of caregivers reported improved
sociability and relationships. And hundreds
of patients said I gave them their life and joy
back. Those are pretty big rewards.
EE: I love being part of something that is bigger
than any of us. I’m so appreciative for what I
continue to learn from others. Serving with
so many smart and dedicated people is an
important daily lesson in humility.
ND: This is an easy one. It’s connections.
We have been connected to so many cool
people and companies. I have found that,
in time, the work we do with the nonprofit
always leads to wonderful alliances
and partnerships. The benefit of these
connections is in addition to the joy and
“warm fuzzies” I feel when I help young
musicians learn about their craft. I love giving
back and being able to help young people
explore the arts or decide that music is the
thing they want to explore for a living. It’s
such an incredible feeling!
BL: My involvement with JUF enriches my family
life by setting an example for giving back
to my Jewish community. Over the years, I
have been able to teach the importance of
giving back to my own children who are now
involved in different areas of JUF.
TD: I have a job, and I feel good about that
job, and people benefit from the work I
do, and my expertise every day! I love that
I am connected to and helping to guide
national efforts of addressing social justice
issues. What we really do (at Chicago
Green Insulation) is provide opportunities
to individuals who have had challenges in
their lives to realize the success that they
are willing to work for. Spray foam is a tool
for human development. If selling “widgets”
allowed me to create jobs for those who need
them and recognize those whom others may
not recognize as valuable – Then I’d be selling
widgets.
38 Highland Park Community Guide 2018
Heart-Led Leaders
On your best day putting in effort
towards these causes, a day you go
home feeling aCComplished, what did
you do, or get done?
JL: It varies, but those best days always include
some combination of getting things done at
work for the bank and having some sort of
impact with a community organization or
non-profit. And, on those days that I really hit
a home run, I probably got to watch one of
my daughter’s basketball games or one of my
son’s water polo games.
EE: I love the team atmosphere and being part
of the team. It’s satisfying and exciting when
everyone performs in their roles. That’s when
organizations achieve their goals. The best
organizations are diverse in every sense of
the word and leverage the strengths of its
members. Anytime you accomplish that team
success, that’s a good day.
GA: I get a feeling of accomplishment after giving
my time toward the duties of my leadership
roles and fundraising activities. I’ve done
physical work to better the community and
helped others obtain solutions to their needs.
RL: After volunteering at the JUF Uptown
Café, an anti-hunger program for the needy
that provides hot meals in a restaurantstyle
setting, I always leave with a sense
of fulfillment and gratitude. After they’re
finished with their meal, volunteers are
encouraged to sit and engage with the diners.
Sometimes it’s the only conversation these
individuals have all day. To have this kind of
dignified experience is unparalleled to any
volunteering experience I’ve ever had.
TD: Our daily goal is to deliver the best in class
foam to our clients better than anyone else,
and to make the world a better place on a
daily, and HOURLY basis. That is and always
will be me.
ND: I survived and didn’t get sick.
If outreach is an important aspect
of your organization, how do you
encourage others to get involved?
How would you encourage others
to get involved in the Highland Park
community in general?
JL: I often comment that one of the blessings
– and curses – of our community is that
everyone gets a voice – and everyone uses it.
I think it’s great to get involved and be active.
Taking ownership of our community and the
organizations that support our community, as
well as the businesses that choose to operate
here is a gift that we can each participate in at
whatever level feels most comfortable for us.
Everything makes a difference.
rf: People will only get involved if they connect
with the purpose or get something out of
it. Whether it’s inner gratification, a sense
of accomplishment, feeling like you’ve
made a difference, or even material gain.
It’s about finding what motivates someone
and appealing to that part of them. Is it
beautification of their surroundings? Pride in
their community? Networking and meeting
new people? Increasing their business? Find
that and you’ll get them involved.
EE: At the Bank, we ask all of our officers to
be involved in a community organization.
It’s an easy ask, they all want to contribute.
Community organizations are a great
opportunity for people to feel valued
and provide real substance, and I believe
its instinctual for people to want to feel
valued. For any organization to succeed,
I think people involved need to feel a true
connection. Find the organization that fits
and jump in.
ND: We encourage past participants to come
back as volunteers and judges. It’s so great
to see a musician who competed when
they were 14 come back as a judge in their
20s! That means the world to me. I am also
constantly bragging about Highland Park and
trying to cross promote other companies and
festivals. I do this on Facebook, at our shows,
and just in everyday conversation with folks.
GA: I always try to encourage others (clients,
students, friends and relatives) to get
involved in any way possible, whether it’s
at the local schools, community events, city
departments, clinics, youth organizations, for
a short term project or longer.
RL: We encourage others to get involved by
attending different events and learning about
what each organization does to give back
to the community. Most of our outreach is
through mailings, emails and ultimately wordof-mouth.
Based on your commitment level
and what you’re passion about specifically,
there are a number of ways to get involved.
Contacting the Outreach Coordinator at the
respective organization is a great first step.
BL: There are numerous events, volunteer
opportunities and speakers throughout the
year that appeal to all ages. I feel that there
is a way for anyone to get involved and find
an area that they are particularly passionate.
Through Idlewood, I have sat on the Retail
and Trades Dinner Committee in past years.
TD: Find your tribe. If type one diabetes affects
you, join the amazing people at Friends
United. If affordable housing is an issue you
face, get involved with Community Partners
for Affordable Housing. If you want to help
kids who drop out of high school and become
young parents but aspire to become positive
members of our community, help Curt’s Cafe
get funded and running here in HP. Get your
favorite group of adults together on random
Friday and Saturday nights and play Cards
Against Humanity. Just get together with
people.

The GYROTONIC ® and GYROKINESIS ® methods

The all-natural method has been practiced by

Istarted it for lower back pain and frozen shoulder,
