F Bass Player Live! Aguilar president Dave Boonshoft cheers on George Porter Jr.’s BP Lifetime Award after speaking on behalf of the funk legend. theater at Musicians Institute for the annual Saturday night BPL All-Star Concert. Aguilar president Dave Boonshoft and producer Jonathan Shank began the festivities with a few words about George Porter Jr., before Randy Jackson spoke and presented the funk forefather with his Lifetime Award. Porter then performed a pulsating set featuring his trio (with keyboardist Michael Lemmler and drummer Terrance Houston) and guest bassists Tal Wilkenfeld and Jerry Jemmott. An interlude featured a short film on Stonefield Basses introduced by Stonefield president Tomm Stanley and Freekbass, with Freekbass returning to play off the clip. For the concert’s second half—Billy Sheehan’s segment—Stanley Clarke emerged to speak about Billy and present him with his award. Sheehan’s trio with guitarist Richie Kotzen and drummer Michael Bennett then rocked the house, and at the conclusion, Sheehan brought on senior Ampeg product specialist Dino Monoxelos. The two lauded Tim Bogert, best known for his groundbreaking work with Vanilla Fudge, Cactus, and Beck, Bogert & Appice. Tim was unable to appear to accept his Lifetime Award due to illness (Monoxelos delivered it two days later to a grateful Bogert). To close the night, Steve Bailey revived his BPL-jam MD role, leading Sheehan, Korn drummer Ray Luzier, guitarist Tommy Baldwin, dUg Pinnick (on lead vocals), Rex Brown, Gerald Veasley, Hadrien Feraud, Brian Bromberg, and Sekou Bunch though a pair of Bogert-related (From top) Beatlemania and beyond: the Hofner booth; School days: Stanley Clarke presents Billy Sheehan with his BP Lifetime Achievement Award; one neck, four hands: Tal Wilkenfeld sits in with George Porter Jr. on “Africa” at the BP All-Star Concert; a dozen deep-end delights in the ESP booth; studio savants: Sean Hurley, Bob Glaub, Chris Chaney, and Kaveh Rastegar in the Session Bass Hang clinic.
