Andrew Schwartz

Andrew Schwartz Distinguished Professor, Neurobiology, University of Pittsburgh Chair, Systems Neuroscience Adjunct Professor, Robotics Institute, CMU Dr. Schwartz received his PhD from the University of Minnesota in 1984. He then went on to a postdoctoral fellowship at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Dr. Schwartz teamed up with engineering colleagues to develop cortical neural prosthetics. The work has progressed to the point that human subjects can now use these recorded signals to control motorized arm and hand prosthetics to feed themselves and perform other tasks of daily living. In addition, he has continued to utilize the neural trajectory representation to better understand the transformation from intended to actual movement using motor illusions in a virtual reality environment. Eric Xing Professor, CMU Founder, Center for Machine Learning and Health, CMU Founder, CEO and Chief Scientist, Petuum Inc. Dr. Xing’s main research interests are the development of machine learning and statistical methodology, and largescale computational system and architectures, for solving problems in artificial, biological, and social systems. With strong academic background in both AI and molecular biology, Dr. Xing wants to use his strength in computing to amplify the value behind the massive volume of healthcare-related data. The Center for Machine Learning and Health, spearheaded by Dr. Xing, is currently mining UPMC’s health data in the hope of “smart-ifying” the entire healthcare system. 10

PANELS Artificial Intelligence Panel PANELS Artificial Intelligence Panel As one of the most popular fields nowadays, “artificial intelligence” (AI) concerns how a machine mimics human’s “cognitive” functions. Traditional problems of AI research include reasoning, planning, learning, natural language processing, perception, and the ability to move and manipulate objects. AI has transformed many aspects of our lives-from iPhone Siri to Snapchat image filters, autonomous driving to DJI phantom, Amazon Echo to security robots, and more. Predictions of the near future intrigue a large group of people from various disciplines. Regardless whether you are an entrepreneur, scholar, student, or white collars, during the 2018 CMU Summit Artificial Intelligence Panel, we will take you on a journey to gaze into the near future, a world submerged by computer science and mathematics, statistics and machine learning, logic and algorithms. Panel Subtopics: • Machine Learning with a focus on Deep Learning • Applied Machine Learning • AI for Social Good • Data/Graph/Text Mining • Game Theory and Decision Making • Natural Language Processing • Computer Vision and Object Recognition THE 7TH CMU SUMMIT April 13-15th, 2018 Pittsburgh, PA 11
