Ruslan Salakhutdinov

Ruslan Salakhutdinov UPMC professor, Machine Learning Department, CMU Ruslan’s primary interests lie in deep learning, machine learning, and large-scale optimization. His main research goal is to understand the computational and statistical principles required for discovering structure in large amounts of data. He is an action editor of the Journal of Machine Learning Research and served on the senior programme committee of several learning conferences including NIPS and ICML. Artur W. Dubrawski Professor, Robotics Institute, CMU Artur considers himself a scientist and a practitioner. He had started up a small company which turned out successful in integration and deployment of advanced computerized control systems and novel technological devices. Artur returned to CMU in 2003 to join the Robotics Institute’s Auton Lab. He works on a range of applied data mining endeavors and teaches data mining to graduate students at the CMU Heinz School. Fei Fang, Panel Moderator Assistant Professor, Institute for Software Research, CMU Fei’s research lies in the field of artificial intelligence and multi-agent systems, focusing on computational game theory with applications to security and sustainability domains. Her dissertation is selected as the runner-up for IFAAMAS-16 Victor Lesser Distinguished Dissertation Award. Her work has won the Innovative Application Award at Innovative Applications of Artificial Intelligence (IAAI’16), the Outstanding Paper Award in Computational Sustainability Track at the International Joint Conferences on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI’15). 12

PANELS Artificial Intelligence Panel Eduard Hovy Professor, Language Technology Institute, CMU Co-Director, Research of the Command, Control, and Interoperability Center for Advanced Data Analysis (CCICADA) Eduard holds adjunct professorships at universities in the US, China, and Canada. Dr.Hovy is one of the initial 17 Fellows of the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL) and also a Fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI). Dr. Hovy’s research addresses several areas in Natural Language Processing, including machine reading of text, question answering, information extraction, automated text summarization, the semi-automated construction of large lexicons and ontologies, and machine translation. Jeff Schneider Research professor, School of Computer Science, CMU Senior engineering manager, Uber’s Advanced Technologies Center Dr. Jeff Schneider has 20 years experience developing, publishing, and applying machine learning algorithms in government, science, and industry. Previously, Jeff was the co-founder and CEO of Schenley Park Research, a company dedicated to bringing machine learning to industry. Later, he developed a machine learning based CNS drug discovery system and commercialized it during two years as Psychogenics’ Chief Informatics Officer.
