The Neuroscience Club, consisting of Ocoee and Dr. Phillips residents, placed third in the Central Florida Brain Bee held at the University of Central Florida. This was the team’s first year at the competition. Noah L. also placed in the top 10 among all of the competitors. Another group of students, who reside in MetroWest and Windermere, competed in the Regional National History Bee held at Trinity Preparatory School. Three of the competitors will advance to represent the school at the National History Bee Finals. Elementary, middle and high school students are invited to explore art and be artful during a Day of Art at the Mennello Museum of American Art. Day of Art for elementary students will be June 4, and for middle and high school students, it will be June 11. Both sessions take place from 8 a.m.- 5:30 p.m. Elementary students will create large-scale abstract sculptures, paint with watercolors and oil pastels, and learn how to draw the world around them. The older kids will be inspired to use their environment to create mixed media prints, kinetic sculptures and acrylic landscapes. They will also create poetry and trade artist cards with new friends inspired by the environment. Both days will be led by experienced teachers and artists. n Helping children in Orange County A broad spectrum of concerned Orange County citizens, including business, civic, education, nonprofit, faith and governmental leaders gathered to announce the formation of a committee to lead a community discussion surrounding the growing needs of the area’s children and the shortfall of resources available to serve them. She created the program in 2011 for student leaders to connect with their local government, and more than 1.400 students have participated in the program since its inception.
