Welcome to Miss Caribbean UK magazine. Each 

quarter we bring you latest news and updates 

regarding the Miss Caribbean UK pageant. 

Miss Caribbean United Kingdom was set up as 

an event to promote all the different Caribbean 

countries under one umbrella. The event uses a 

pageant to promote, educate, inspire and celebrate 

the historical and cultural impact of the Caribbean 

within the United Kingdom. 

The MCUK organisers, Clayton and Jacqui Brown, 

have expressed that: “We want to be a vehicle, 

to assist in bringing the Caribbean and its 

diaspora within the UK, closer. We want the old 

and younger generation Caribbean descendants 

to recognise the influence and impact that the 

Caribbean Diaspora has had on UK culture and 

thus, appreciate the importance of retaining the 

link with their Caribbean heritage.” 

To facilitate this objective MCUK holds heats 

across the UK. To date we have held heats and 

created contacts with BAME communities in; 

Manchester, Birmingham, Nottingham, Sheffield, 

Luton, Leicester and London.

Miss Keeleigh Griffith was the first Miss Caribbean UK crowned in 2014. 

With both grandparents of Barbadian heritage from St Patrick and 

Christchurch, Keeleigh has regularly visited her beautiful Barbados since 

she was three years old with her Grandad (who she has a very close 

relationship with) and therefore, her love for the island has never ceased. 

She is extremely proud of her heritage and culture.

Not only is Amy blessed with spiritual and aesthetic beauty, she is also athletically

She aspires to make a difference in schools, sports and most importantly, in life and

Elizabeth is a young and ambitious woman with a dream of becoming a future 

fashion brand in the UK or Grenada. She is currently studying fashion at Leicester 

University as she has always had a passion to make clothes. Elizabeth loves her 

heritage as she travels to Grenada every year.

Santrece Stewart was crowned 1st Runner Up of Miss Caribbean UK 2017 

Growing in up in Jamaica helped Santrece to develop a passion for nature, the arts 

and of science. She has a First class honours in Biomedical Science and aims to be 

a qualified Doctor. She would love to use her skills through science and creativity 

to inspire others and would also like to travel the world to demonstrate how her 

Afro-Caribbean ancestry has made her into the person she is today.

Carissma Griffiths was crowned 2nd Runner Up of Miss Caribbean UK 2017. 

Carissma by name, charisma by nature. She is a fun-loving people person with a 

realistic but optimistic view on life. She is a confident, outspoken individual that 

works hard, loves hard and plays hard. Carrisma has a degree in Theatre and the 

Performing Arts so Drama is a big passion of hers and has performed at a few West 

End musicals.

to chase the dream and signs a book deal 

with independent publishers London based 

Cranthorpe Millner. His autobiography is 

the result of many years of hard work and 

determination and will be an inspiration 

to anyone who has known the pain and 

hardship of trying to make it in a world filled 

with people who seem to be against you. On 

the 5th December 2004, Shaun became the 

first black person to win the BBC television 

quiz show Mastermind, and since then 

his career has catapulted and he is now a 

household name, appearing on ITV’s smash 

hit teatime quiz show The Chase as The Dark 

Destroyer. 

Kirsty-Ellen Smillie, Chief Executive Officer, 

Cranthorpe Millner Publishers, commented: 

“we are thrilled Shaun chose to work with

To commemorate Grenada’s 

Independence from the United 

Kingdom on 7th February 1974, 

Elizabeth attended two ceremonies that 

were held at the Cavendish Banqueting Suite 

in Colindale. 

The dazzling event was themed under Black 

Panther in homage to the release of the seminal 

superhero movie, with the show co-hosted for the 

first time by debonair photographer & director 

Simon Frederick of #BlackistheNewBlack BBC fame 

alongside actress and writer co-host, the beautiful 

queen of Twerk fitness, Kelechi Okafor.

1st March, Elizabeth is fea 

When you think of pageants, 

your first visions may bring you 

tomemories of much-loved comedy films 

from the Noughties (Miss Congeniality, 

anyone?) or of a disastrous viral moment 

involving Steve Harvey, the Philippines and 

Colombia. 

However, most pageants don’t involve 

dramatic shootouts, or make the global 

news for days on end - they’re happily 

going on, all over the World, many 

with the aim to give contestants the 

opportunity to positively represent 

something, or somewhere they care 

about. Fashion student Elizabeth Williams, 

21, represented Grenada in the 2017 run 

of Miss Caribbean UK, and much to her 

delight, she walked away with the 

top prize!

Currently the reigning 

queen, Elizabeth spoke to 

Pride about her journey 

to the crown, her love for 

Grenada and the future 

of her pageant life. 

So, Elizabeth, what 

made you try out for Miss 

Caribbean UK in the first 

place? 

Elizabeth Williams: I 

entered the competition as 

a confidence booster, Also I 

just wanted to do something 

for myself and I wanted to 

make the country that I was 

representing, Grenada, proud. 

I have a positive attitude but 

felt that I needed to also 

boost my confidence a 

bit. I imagined myself 

being a great ambassador 

of Miss Caribbean UK by 

being a good role model to 

other young girls of Caribbean heritage 

and encouraging them to always strive 

to achieve their fullest potential. Also, i 

thought this was a perfect opportunity to 

make my fellow Grenadians proud and to

tured in Pride Magazine 

also represent the land of Spice in a positive 

way. 

What are someof your standout moments 

from the competition? 

EW: Ohhhh, there were so many! But 

I have three that immediately come 

to mind: first, was meeting all the 

other contestants. Imagine that you 

are placed in a situation where 

you meet eight other 

young ladies all with the 

same goal but somehow, 

you all develop really 

close relationships and 

become life-long friends. 

That was awesome. My 

second favourite part was 

my performance in the “Carnival” 

section of the show. I loved my 

costume - it was designed by Maria 

Joseph of Mardi Gras costumes. This 

was the first time we all appeared 

on stage and I was on fire. My 

confidence shot through the roof 

and I just loved every moment. 

Lastly, I loved the “Evening 

Wear” section. My dress, by 

AgyeFrance, was to die for. I 

felt like a million dollars 

and guess what? I also 

won the crown for the 

“Best Evening 

Dress” - 

result! 

How did 

winning feel? 

EW: OMG, If you get the chance to watch 

the video, you’ll see that I was in a state 

of complete disbelief. Of course, all of 

us entering a competition like this would 

ultimately love to win but when your name 


is called-out, you really can’t describe the 

feeling. I thought that I was dreaming at 

first but then the tears of joy just floodedin 

and would not stop. I laugh whenever 

I think back as I did not expect to react 

like that. Gosh, even my make-up was all 

washed out. 

Do you have a favourite motivational quote 

that helped you along the way? 

EW: Oh yes. My motto to myself is: “in the 

end we only regret the chances we didn’t 

take”. This always encourages me to do 

things that I may be scared of doing - like 

this competition. I was really hesitant - I 

nearly didnt attend the heat. But I suddenly 

realised that I would really regret not trying, 

so I just went for it. 

What do you love most about Grenada? 

EW: It’s the people of the island, and 

their warm welcome that makes me love 

Grenada so much. I feel so relaxed when 

I’m there, I can go anywhere, see old 

friends and family and enjoy some crazy 

new activities like the Grenada High Wire, 

lay on one of the many great beaches, 

and explore wonderful chocolate and 

rum. What more could a girl ask from her 

ancestral home! 

What do you like to do when you visit 

Grenada? 

EW: How long do you have? Of course, I 

love to visit the beaches; Grand “Anse” and 

“Bathway” are my favourites. As part of the 

“Winner’s Prize”, the competition founders 

(Clayton & Jacqui Brown) work closely 

with the travel sponsor; SN Travel and the 

Grenada Tourism Authority to make sure 

that my time spent in Grenada is productive 

as well as enjoyable. I’m really keen to 

visit both Carriacou and Petite Martinique,

Grenada’s sister island. It’s so different from 

the main island having carried on African 

traditions and festival not seen on Grenada. 

Outside of Miss Caribbean, what other 

pursuits do you have? 

EW: I love fashion 

to come. 

Who is your fashion icon? 

EW: Strangely, I’m the kind of person that 

doesn’t follow fashion so I don’t really have 

a fashion icon. In a way, I decided to become 

my own Icon; I try to stay away form what 

everyone else is wearing and switch it up a 

bit! 

What comes next for you? 

EW: Winning Miss Caribbean UK has given 

me a bit of a pageant bug - so whilst I am 

still young, I’m exploring the possibility 

of entering an international pageant and 

represent my Grenada. But the dream is 

to develop and launch my fashion brand 

“Mya Marsha” successfully in the UK 

and Grenada. And, I look forward to the 

growth “RGMents” an entertainment 

company founded by my friends and 

myself. 

What advice would you give the 

ladies who want to apply for 2018’s 

competition? 

EW: Just go for it! An opportunity to 

be involved in something like this 

only comes around once a year. 

It’s a fantastic experience with lots 

of prospects and new friends. 

Have fun, enjoy and you never 

know, you may just win.

enjoy making evening wear 

and party wear. Most of the time I make 

my own outfits when I go out. My future 

plans are to set up my own clothing brand of 

timeless fashion pieces, things that will last

15 th March 2018 - Tropical Sun hosted an evening for African and 

Caribbean media and promoters. 

On the evening of March 15th 2018, Elizabeth was invited to attend 

an event which was hosted by the pioneering World Foods brand 

Tropical Sun at the headquarters of Wanis 

Organised in collaboration with ethnic communications agency Rich Visions, 

the event was a UK media milestone, bringing together an unprecedented 

number of influential African and Caribbean executives, journalists, 

presenters and personalities.

of going for what I want, knowing and 

understanding that I will need to make sacrifices, 

be committed and work beyond hard, with the 

knowledge that in the end, it will pay off. 

Was MCUK worth it? Indeed it was. MCUK was 

the perfect place to continue my journey and I 

know it will be the perfect place for anyone who 

is looking to take part in something unique and 

refreshing. Regardless of your circumstances, 

the pageant will instantly make you feel 

beautiful inside and out as it isn’t about a ‘pretty 

face’. 

In a society where, disturbingly, having a pretty 

face is the key to many successes, MCUK stood 

out to me. It is different, it is unique and most of 

all, many can relate to the message it stands for. 

In a short space of time, I had lots of amazing 

times with everyone. The girls are honestly, 

some of the loveliest people I’ve met. They are 

all beautiful and intelligent and we empower 

each other. 

The MCUK team is also absolutely hands on 

supportive and friendly. I am sure, without a 

doubt, it will be the same for you, even better, 

because MCUK gets bigger and better each year! 

During my time in the pageant, the queens 

and I had photo shoots and we took part in the 

Notting Hill Carnival. We definitely pulled no 

punches during this event as we showed off our 

elegance and of course our captivating moves. 

Being in a pageant and been able to 

represent the Caribbean as well as my 

beautiful country Jamaica was something I 

had always wanted to do. 

However, although I’ve gained some experience 

in the field, I didn’t give myself the chance to 

further my achievements. This was mostly due 

to the challenges I faced at the time while I 

was trying to successfully get a degree and work 

at the same time. In other words, I was trying to 

put all my eggs in one basket – and honestly, it 

was a lot of egg! 

As I got older, completing university 

and working, I’ve learnt the importance 

Taking part in MCUK will enable you to learn so 

many great things and it will truly be a magical 

experience. You will surely cherish the memories 

and everything else that is yet to come, because 

regardless of who gets crowned, you will always 

be one family. 

If you should be crowned, my advice is to ensure 

you fully live up to being Miss Caribbean UK 

2018 and become worthy of the title. Ensuring 

you make the wearing of the crown count and 

make a difference. 

You will be bestowed with love and support 

and the journey will be one you can share with 

many and also one you will learn from.

Eleanor Small 

was born and 

educated in Barbados. On leaving 

secondary school she joined the Barbados 

Teaching Service before immigrating to 

England, where she joined the National 

Savings Bank as a Clerical Officer before 

being transferred to the Department of 

Education and Science. 

The sudden death of her husband, 

tragically killed in a car accident in 

Barbados while attending his mother’s 

funeral, was the impetus in which Eleanor 

redirected her energies into helping 

others. Her outgoing, vibrant and dynamic 

personality enabled her to make valuable 

contributions to the development of 

many Barbadian associations, Caribbean 

organisations and communities. 

Eleanor demonstrates a sense of 

commitment and purpose to several 

worthy charitable causes. She is an 

ardent Fund Raiser and her work through 

The Modernites Association (UK) helps 

such charitable bodies as the African 

Caribbean Leukemia Trust, the Grenadian 

Disaster Fund and the Shia Foundation.

Eleanor’s friends include people of many 

social and ethnic backgrounds. Her special 

rapport with young people has raised 

awareness for the need for associations 

catering for the interests of the younger

As a founder member of The Modernites 

Association (UK) she has served for a 

number of years as secretary and Public 

Relations Officer. Although she does not 

currently have an official role she continues 

to take an active part by assertive outreach; 

promoting and planning fund raising 

activities. 

Founder member of B-BC (BajanBajan 

Connections) an organisation formed for 

young Barbadians in collaboration with 

friends. Involving people of all ages and 

ethnic backgrounds, learning and benefiting 

from others talents and experiences, whilst 

forging links between organisations in 

Barbados, across the Caribbean and the UK. 

In 1993 she successfully won a case against 

her former employer, a government 

department, raising awareness of the 

suppression of promotion towards black 

officers. The landmark ruling cleared the 

way and inspired other Black and ethnic 

staff to pursue and advance their careers 

within the civil service.

Eleanor is an avid supporter 

of the Caricom pageants,

Aina.M is a professional Freelance Makeup Artist. She works in all areas of Makeup from 

beautiful bridal makeup to creating makeup looks on a film sets. Aina.M started 

her Makeup Journey studying at The Academy of Freelance Makeup and has not put down

On the evening of March 15th 2018,

Tropical Sun hosted the UK’s African 

and Caribbean media and promoters event 

at the headquarters of Wanis: the UK’s 

leading distributor of African and Caribbean 

food and drinks brands, including Tropical 

Sun as founded in 1964 with the launch 

of a small trade-only food store in North 

London. In addition to Tropical Sun, it 

represents many other renowned brands 

including PA Benjamins, Carib, Honeybun, 

Seprod and Tropiway. 

Organised in collaboration with ethnic 

communications agency Rich Visions, the 

event was a UK media milestone, bringing 

together an unprecedented number 

of influential African and Caribbean 

executives, journalists, presenters and 

personalities. 

The event’s primary focus was detailing 

the 22-year history of Tropical Sun Foods, 

beginning with the brand’s origins, moving 

through product development and 

culminating on community collaboration, 

and amongst others the brand’s work 

Marfo Children Care Foundation 

Sickle Cell UK projects. 

Attendees were served with international

including jerk chicken, jollof rice and spiced 

bun ‘n’ cheese. Following presentations 

by the brand’s directors, marketing

was brought to a close with warm and
