Selwyn Times: April 18, 2018

18 Wednesday April 18 2018 Latest Christchurch news at SELWYN TIMES Darfield edge out newcomers SPORTS • By Gordon Findlater DARFIELD HAVE remained unbeaten and at the top of section B in the combined country competition after being put to the test by newcomers Springston. Last year’s Ellesmere runners-up Darfield were heavy favourites on paper, but after the 17-10 win they believe the new boys in division one can’t be taken lightly. “We were certainly surprised by their results coming into the game,” said Darfield coach Alex Robertson. “We know why now, though. They’re a very determined team and will cause a big team an upset at some stage.” Darfield knew they were in for a game early and held a 10-5 advantage at the break with tries to winger Sheldon Reed and fullback Alex Parker, while centre Michael Sheenan crossed the line for Springston. Darfield seized the initiative early in the second 40 with a another try to Parker to make it 17-10. However, when Springston No 8 Sean Powell crossed the line with 15min remaining the contest was in for a nail-bitting finish. The visitors held on, denying Springston what would have been a remarkable win. However, Springston coach Anton Sutherland says his team were very encouraged by the result. “This game was always going to be the biggest test to see where we are at,” said Sutherland. We’ve got a very confident team following the result. We felt we dominated possession, but Darfield were incredibly structured and pounced on our mistakes, so we will take some learnings from that.” Sutherland also admits the team has had to readjust their goals this season after wins over Kaiapoi and Southern and a tight 29-34 loss to Rakaia in their opening three games.
