Who said that moving office is a nightmare? Thankfully for us, the OFAS move

went very smoothly indeed, without incident.

I wish I could have said the same when I last moved house; that wasn’t so smooth

at all, in fact a total nightmare!! I’m sure many of you can relate to this! Have you

Before the move, during and currently, we are

getting ready for Clerkenwell Design Week

2018, where we are media partners for the

6th Year running. We love this event, as it’s a

perfect opportunity to engage with our

members and fellow contacts who share the

same interest within the contract furniture

industry.

This year, Edge Design based at 21 – 22 Great

Sutton Street, Clerkenwell, have kindly offered their showroom

as a ‘rendezvous’ point to catch up for an informal ‘Nata’

Makers’ Welfare Campaign

The Furniture Makers’ Company, the furnishing

industry’s charity, is appealing to the entire sector to

support its 2018 welfare campaign by hanging its new

poster to help spread the word that it can support

industry workers past and present if they have fallen on

hard times.

The charity is calling on employers within the industry to get behind the initiative

and hang copies of the poster in offices, factories and other designated staff areas.

Danger at Your Desk:

The Hidden Health Issues

Seven hours at your desk can lead to obesity and depression.

New research from global office solutions brand, Fellowes, has found that worryingly most

people in Britain will spend seven hours of their day sitting at a desk, with 42% of Brits

admitting to sitting for too long without taking a break.

While it may seem harmless sitting at your desk for most of the work day, one in three will suffer a health problem. This can include

everything from back pain and fatigue to serious issues such as obesity and depression.

Sitting for over seven hours isn’t the only bad habit we have at work:

• Over half (55%) of UK employees also admit to poor posture when sitting at their desks

• 42% of Brits are not drinking enough water during the day

The research shows that Brits are amongst the worst affected in Europe, with UK employees suffering regularly from backache (34%),

neck ache (25%) and headaches (23%) as a direct result of how they are working.

In addition, as many as 1 in 5 (19%) UK workers highlighted weight problems, and 1 in 10 (8%) cited an increase in blood pressure as a

result of poor wellbeing at work.

These health issues are reducing the daily volume of work employees are able to produce, leading to nearly a quarter (24%) of

employees working extra hours or at the weekend on a regular basis to compensate.

These health problems are costing an incredible €73 billion loss to businesses across Europe because of employee sickness. High

absence rates mean low productivity for businesses which translates to low profit margins.

However, it’s not just the employee’s responsibility to take care of their own wellbeing. To tackle this growing problem, employers must

start to implement a longer-term, more preventative approach to unhealthy working practices, rather than falling back on tactical ‘quickfixes’.

With 57% of employees saying that they would stay in their jobs longer if more was done to look after their wellbeing, and 58%

saying that their work would be of a better quality, the solution to the productivity puzzle is clear. Evidently there is a huge incentive

for employers to address the causes of work-related health issues and by doing so, they will pave the way for a much happier, more

engaged and ultimately a more productive work place.

health and wellbeing are being affected.

A Change for the Better

Key pointers when it’s time to consider changing areas. Designing and fitting out changing

and locker rooms is a specialised business, requiring knowledge and expertise across several

disciplines for the whole to work out greater than the sum of the parts.

Partnering the process

When it’s time for a change and a refit,

or starting from scratch, best to specify a

supplier/installer that can co-ordinate the

project for you, from design and layout to

completed facility.

The suppliers dedicated project manager,

assigned to partner you through the

process, is tuned to handle everything

from quotes, drawings, materials, surfaces

and décor to overseeing the install and

aftercare.

Ask about the fitting team too – have they

a long track record of doing the job. The

best have been plying their trade for a

generation so can often use their own skill

and judgment to iron out any hiccups that

may arise.

Built to last/fit to refresh

Leisure and fitness changing areas can

come in for a bit of a battering due to

heavy use. Locker carcasses may well stand

the test of time but doors and edgings can

show their age and you should be looking

to refurbish every five years or so.

Interior décor in the sector can date quite

quickly and it’s critical that members feel

they are using fresh, modern environments

rather than stale ones.

Sturdily built lockers can be kept in

place, while doors and panelling can be

replaced with vogue patterns, designs and

hardwearing materials, to keep costs down.

No bugbears

Changing room hygiene remains a key

concern, especially in wet areas but

sophisticated surfaces are heralding in new

levels of clinical cleanliness to combat risk

of cross-infection.

Doors and other seen wood components

can be finished with two coats of high

build clear lacquer formulated to include

an agent, such as Medicote, designed to

prevent bacteria surviving on its surface.

The agent also reduces risk of

deterioration, discoloration and odours

caused by micro-organisms. The result is a

high-quality, durable finish with added level

of protection.

Go with the flow

Architects and designers may leave

changing room layouts to the supply

specialists, whose experience with

optimising alloted space will help deliver

facilities that promote ease and comfort.

Good locker layout for example can aid

traffic flow from entry to exit, while poor

design can create havoc. When some hotel

fitness changing rooms have to cater for

memberships of several thousand, thought

given to this element of provision is time

well spent.

Lock and store

Trends are changing in hospitality.

Locker management is shifting to digital

solutions, in part to avoid key losses or

inappropriate use. RFID (Radio-Frequency

Identification) systems use electromagnetic

fields to identify and track tags (containing

electronically-stored information) attached

to objects automatically. Tags can be

attached to cash, clothing and possessions.

Keypad methods rely on using a personal,

usually four-digit, code to open the locker.

Modern electronic locking allows site

staff to control the secure time available

to members and users before the door

automatically opens.

to its original 1935 identity from 2020.

Reinforces Boutique Status

In the heart of Cheshire’s `footballer belt`, Alderley Edge Hotel is undergoing major

refurbishment as owners the Lees-Jones family launch a £2.5m upgrade.

Design have completed the first phase for

the family, which is celebrating 190 years of

brewing under its LW Lees brand.

“our interiors are concept driven”

“The client wanted to update the bar and

restaurant, which was previously housed

in a conservatory which had come to the

end of its useful life,” says architect Ian

Garraway.

“Our brief was to replace the conservatory

with an updated orangery befitting the

main hotel building. The restaurant was to

have an eclectic but relaxed, homely feel.”

As with any restaurant, the main traffic

flow is food from the kitchen. “We had to

take into account how customers move

around the space,” Ian explains, “and this

influenced the number of covers and our

furniture specification.”

The orangery was sized to accommodate

the required number of covers and

traffic flows. “In keeping with the brief,

w selected luxury soft seating from Style

Matters - a larger chair than standard.”

The brief is always the key consideration,

which encapsulates the target market

of the hotel, he adds. “Budget was also

important as we had to balance aesthetics

with commercial considerations but it

allowed us to specify custom fabrics and

so lower the unit cost of furniture without

compromising aesthetics and quality.”

Sourcing a supplier with a pedigree in

hospitality and commercial interiors was

critical in delivery stylish, eclectic furniture

to match the `homely` brief, Ian adds.

“The challenge was to find furniture that

did not feel commonplace or `pubby`.

Style Matters’ range met our needs and

provided the required degree of diversity.”

The design of the existing building

means both bar and restaurant form a

unified space. “We devoted a lot of time

considering how the space should be subdivided

and whether the restaurant should spill into

the bar area,” explains Ian.

“It was felt the bar needed to be more

informal and relaxed, allowing a variety of

spaces for people to sit, with more formal

seating by the bar and more relaxed

seating with sofas and chairs by the

fireside.

The hotel bar has to satisfy differing

types of clientele. “Hotel guests are likely

to use the space at breakfast time, and

conference/business clients for shorter

periods throughout the day. Sockets

throughout provide power for those

wanting to use the space as a working

area, allowing customers the choice of

environments.”

The practice specified a high level of finish

throughout. Engineered oak was used

instead of laminated floor and high quality

fabrics and wallcoverings all ooze an

understated quality. Statement pieces such

as the blown glass entrance chandelier

were used to create talking points to the

design.

This was Carroll Design’s first project for

JW Lees, who appointed the practice on

the strength of their portfolio of restaurant

projects for local and national clients. “Our

interiors are concept driven, meaning we

try and bring something special to all our

design work,” Ian notes.

Their solutions certainly seem to satisfy

the family’s vision to reinforce Alderley

Edge Hotel as “the best boutique hotel in

Cheshire.”

Gym Change

Uplift “A Breath

of Fresh Air”

Upgrade of the busy Pace Gym is the latest

phase of a rolling redevelopment programme

at the vast 895-room Park Inn, Heathrow.

Project architects Satellite have worked with the

hotel for the last seven years, redesigning several

key areas, including the bar and restaurant. This time round, refreshing the gym was the project in hand for Satellite. Fitness is a

fast-moving market, with tastes and trends shifting regularly.

Décor particularly can date quickly and facilities can age

too given the thousands of times annually that guests use

them to work out and change.

“The scope of the project involved new lighting and

redecoration, re-equipping the gym, fitting a sauna in the

pool area, fresh flooring and male and female changing

provision,” states project architect Giedre Kazlauskaite.

A provider new to her this time was bespoke changing

room furniture manufacturer and installer Crown Sports

Lockers. “We sourced locker suppliers and Crown looked

to have the quality, expertise and experience to handle

the work,” she notes.

After meeting Crown project manager Sam Palmer on

site to finalise designs for the changing area, the bespoke

furniture manufacturer began fitting out both male and

female rooms. “The layouts of the male and female

changing rooms have been stripped out and completely

reconfigured to achieve the optimal layout,” Giedre says.

The vision for the project was as refreshing as the décor chosen to deliver it. “Slate grey,

anthracite, Capri and Royal blue patterned locker doors, with cream interiors create a

sense of playfulness and generate an uplifting environment in which to change and an

aesthetic to attract new customers too,” she explains.

The tones and ambience are mirrored in slate grey bench seating with stainless steel legs,

and contrasting upholstered Agua Aries charcoal island seats.

Dry vanity units finished in sophisticated slate grey laminate, picked up in shower and

toilet cubicles and Corian Cameo white wet vanities complete a turnkey scope of project

that Crown increasingly handles.

Adds Giedre: “Crown’s quality of product and work were excellent throughout and they

were so easy to deal with. Everything ran like clockwork.”

Attention to health and safety is particularly important within

the crèche.

Managing Director of spa consultancy, designers and operator Spa

Creators, contracted for the project.

“There are great views of the sea as you work out in the gym and we

created a dramatic vitality hall featuring a wall of water,” he explains.

“Our choice of furniture for Beyond Escapes Devon centred on form

and function,” Alistair continues. “Bridgman are a large provider of

commercial furniture and offered a three-year warranty on the items

they supplied.

“Galapagos furniture is made in the UK and the company views its

products as an investment, built to a quality that allows operators to

reupholster items rather than replacing everything. Longevity is a key

factor when selecting seating for relaxation in the lounge.”

Functionality and style were the requirements when specifying Made

in Britain furniture manufacturer REM, celebrating their centenary

this year, which offers manicure units, seating, massage couches and

dispensaries.

Soft furnishings from The Contract Chair Co add “choice, convenience

and continuity” to the Beyond Escapes Devon ambience.

Quality changing areas are increasingly important in specification

criteria and for this project, Alistair chose bespoke furniture

manufacturer and installer Crown Sports Lockers, whose products are

also made in Britain.

They supplied and fitted bespoke timber lockers with Digilock Axis

RFID locks, dry vanity unit, towel display and drop, kitting out the four

treatment rooms with bespoke cupboards, tops and storage. Front

of house installs include the reception area and desk and a retail unit,

which Spa Creators designed with Crown.
