opprairie.com News the orland park prairie | April 19, 2018 | 9 From APRIL 10 Orland Park woman, 89, dies in house fire Bill Jones, Editor An 89-year-old Orland Park woman died following a house fire April 6 in the 7300 block of Paradise Lane. The incident occurred around 5 p.m. in the home’s kitchen, according to a press release issued April 10 by the Orland Fire Protection District. The woman was identified by fire officials as Margaret Keane. She was found in the kitchen with severe burns, according to the press release. Paramedics reportedly treated her and transported her to Palos Community Hospital in Palos Heights. She later was taken to Loyola Medicine’s Burn Center by ambulance. Orland Fire spokesperson Ray Hanania said the cause of the fire was a meal Keane was cooking, but beyond that it was still under investigation as of April 10. “The initial investigation suggests her clothes caught on fire while she was cooking, possibly leaning over the stove,” Hanania wrote. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the causes of death as complications of thermal injuries, kitchen fire and hypertensive cardiovascular disease, citing the manner as an accident in the April 10 case ledger. She officially was pronounced dead at 12:55 a.m. April 9 at Loyola. Orland Park Police Cmdr. Tony Farrell noted Keane’s husband was home at the time of the incident but not in the same room, so there was not an eyewitness to the incident. He said while the death is thought to be accidental, in line with the fire district’s and coroner’s reports on it, there is a detective assigned to follow up as the department typically does with death investigations. The fire was contained to the kitchen of the home, according to the fire district’s release. In the wake of the fire, the district reminded residents to take caution when cooking. Officials urged residents to refrain from wearing loose clothing and to have a fire extinguisher nearby, as well as to never leave food unattended on the stove. Orland Park Police Dept. participating in distracted driving campaign Submitted by Village of Orland Park Throughout the entire month of April, the Orland Park Police Department is joining with the Illinois Distracted Driving Awareness campaign to enforce Drop It and Drive, reminding motorists that it is illegal to text or use an electronic device while driving. Illinois’ handheld cellphone ban went into effect in January of 2014 and prohibits handheld cellphone use while driving. The law only allows for hands-free speakerphone devices that feature voice-activated or one-digit dialing. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 10 people are killed each day in distracted driving crashes, contributing to the 37,000 people killed in crashes on United States roadways in 2016. Contrary to what some drivers may think, handsfree, handheld and in-vehicle technologies are not distraction-free, even if a driver’s eyes are on the road and their hands are on the wheel. The latest AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety research found the following. • Drivers who text when behind the wheel more than double their odds of being involved in a crash. • Drivers who use invehicle technologies, such as voice-based and touchscreen features, can be distracted for more than 40 seconds when completing tasks like programming navigation or sending a text message. • Removing eyes from the road for just two seconds doubles the risk for a crash. Last year’s Distracted Driving Awareness efforts resulted in more than 18,000 warnings and citations statewide for distracted driving offenses. Anderson, 18, of 946 85th St. in Chicago, was charged March 27 with retail theft after she allegedly tried to take five pairs of glasses valued at a total of $1,120 from a store at Orland Square. She allegedly put the glasses in her purse, after removing the price tags for some of them, and left the store without paying for the items. March 25 • Kennyada Russhay Preshon, 19, of 7921 S. Colfax Ave. in Chicago, was charged with retail theft after she allegedly tried to take various items valued at a total of $416 from a department store at Orland Square. She reportedly placed men’s clothing items on a rack, left the store, came back, took them into a fitting room and then concealed them in a bag and ran from the store. She was tackled by a bystander and arrested, police added. March 24 • Ahmad S. Ghadban, 23, of 8605 Shagbark Court in Orland Park, was charged with possession of a controlled substance, suspended driver’s license, no insurance and one headlight, as well as issued a municipal violation for possession of cannabis after the 2004 Hyundai Elantra he was driving was stopped near the intersection of 143rd Street and LaGrange Road. Police reportedly stopped the vehicle because it had only one headlight operating. An officer noticed an odor of cannabis coming from the vehicle and spotted cannabis in the driver’s-side area of the vehicle, according to the report. Police reportedly found a bag containing 3.5 grams of cannabis, as well as a bag with four peach-colored pills, in a panel to the side of the steering wheel. Police later identified the pills as Adderall. March 22 • Raul Ortiz, 25, of 822 Hauge St. in Joliet, was charged with retail theft after he allegedly tried to take 19 bottles of alcohol valued at a total of $386.42 from a grocery store in the 9300 block of 159th St. He reportedly concealed the bottles in his coat and tried to leave the store without paying for them. March 17 • David L. Hudson, 37, of 6809 S. Laflin St. in Chicago, was charged with retail theft after he allegedly tried to take 26 men’s clothing items valued at a total of $446.76 from a store on Orland Park Place. He reportedly pushed a cart with the clothes past the last point of purchase without paying for the items. March 16 • Luis G. Cazares, 20, of 18008 Alice Lane in Orland Park, was charged with DUI-alcohol, no insurance, improper lane usage and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident after he allegedly drove a 2005 Nissan Altima over a median near Orland Parkway and Emilie Lane. He was driving westbound on the parkway when he tried to make a turn and traveled over the curb, police said. His speech was slurred, eyes were glossy and his breath smelled of alcohol, according to the report. He also was swaying and unbalanced, police said.
