It is a Mother’s Day tradition 

unlike any other. 

Lady - A Women’s 

Expo, presented by 22nd 

Century Media and Planet 

Fitness, is set to return 

from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, 

April 21, at the Tinley 

Park Convention Center, 

18451 Convention Center 

Drive in Tinley Park. 

The annual event also 

is sponsored by the Chicago 

Sky, Ingalls Health 

System and Celebrity 

Cruises. 

The free event has more 

than 100 vendors slated to 

attend this year — covering 

health and wellness to 

fashion and beauty, food 

to financial planning — 

making it the largest Lady 

expo to date, according to 

Heather Warthen, chief 

events officer at 22nd 

Century Media. 

“The nice thing about 

this expo that I see year to 

year is that we see a lot of 

girls getting together and 

starting a ladies day out,” 

Warthen said. “We also 

draw moms, daughters 

and granddaughters. That’s 

what makes me happy. It’s 

a great prelude into Mother’s 

Day weekend and a 

great chance for women of 

all ages to bond.” 

Among the highlights 

this year will be an expanded 

roster of vendors, 

as well as entertainment 

options. 

“I think people like to 

see what the vendors have 

to offer,” Warthen said. 

“It’s a great opportunity, 

because we have an entire 

stage of cooking demos, 

which is back again this 

year. We have some great 

local chefs, and you can 

pick up some new cooking 

tips. I know that was a 

huge draw last year.” 

She also pointed to the

A lot of people will be strolling through 

the aisles Saturday, April 21, for the 

fifth annual Lady – A Women’s Expo. 

We asked Heather Warthen, 22nd 

Century Media’s chief events officer 

and resident expert expo authority, for 

some “hacks” for those who plan to 

attend, so they can make best use of 

their time there. 

1. Scout ahead: Take a look at the 

event’s Eventbrite webpage before 

you head to the convention center. 

It will have the full list of vendors, 

an event schedule for the fitness 

classes, cooking demos and main 

stage entertainment. Map out some 

things you definitely want to do and 

such as Danni Allen — 

the winner of Season 14 

of “The Biggest Loser” 

— and plenty free fitness 

classes, including cardio 

and yoga. 

Also returning to the 

expo this year is Silk Avenue, 

from whom attendees 

can purchase custommade 

scarves. 

“We’ve got something 

for everybody,” Warthen 

said. “There’s plenty to 

do, and I think people 

like seeing the variety of 

vendors we get. It’s not all 

clothing or food or home 

remodeling or repairs; we 

really do try to bring in 

a variety that people will 

enjoy.”

you ever heard the expression, “The

3. Be a trendsetter; go against the 

flow: Warthen says that oftentimes, 

expogoers tend to follow a similar 

path through the aisles, leading 

to some congestion at certain 

spots. One way to avoid that? Be a 

trailblazer and walk in the opposite 

direction, by working from the back

level is when it comes 

to a specific injury. 

Ask what insurances 

are not only “accephysical 

therapisted” but innetwork 

with the company. 

People should ask for 

their benefits to be fully 

explained and in writing 

before beginning treatment. 

If one’s insurance 

has a high out-of-pocket 

cost, ask if there are selfpay 

rates available. People 

don’t want to be stuck with 

a surprise bill.

can lead to a faster road to 

recovery and a better overall

helps nurse through knee replacement 

Katherine Krol is a lady who 

doesn’t have much time to put up 

her feet. She keeps an eye on her 

92-year-old mother and keeps in 

touch with the activities of her 

sister, her adult children and four 

grandchildren regularly. 

Recently widowed, Katherine 

also works as a registered nurse. 

So, when her right knee started 

hurting nine years ago, she powered 

through the pain and sought 

some initial treatment, but the 

pain returned and was soon intolerable. 

“Every time I walked, I had 

pain,” Katherine said.

Nigro, MD, an orthopedic surgeon

Ingalls Memorial. Dr. Nigro 

performed her friend’s knee 

replacement and she loved his 

bedside manner. 

Dr. Nigro said Katherine’s 

knee was bone-on-bone, meaning 

the cartilage had completely 

worn away between the bone 

ends. Katherine was ready to get 

the problem solved. 

She had knee replacement surgery 

in November, in a procedure 

called kinematic alignment, 

which Dr. Nigro brought into his 

practice in the last two years. It 

allows the knee joint bones to be 

resurfaced without cutting ligaments 

around the knee. 

“This is a more natural knee 

replacement that allows people 

to recover more quickly,” Dr. 

Nigro said.

day, urged by her daughter. 

“I needed that scolding,” she 

said. “It was scary.”

Katherine parked on the garage’s
