Example Play Areas 

Purchasing the correct play equipment for your school is a big decision; after all, the 

equipment that you choose is going to be used and enjoyed by children for years. 

We want your play area to be perfect, so to help you with this 

process we have designed some example play areas to show you 

a mixture of equipment that is great for each age range. 

Early Years: 0–3 Years Play Area 

Children learn and develop quicker in their early years than at any other time 

in their lives, so it is crucial that they are given an environment that provides 

a platform to allow them to grow and flourish. Play is an important part of 

early years’ life as it allows children to explore, discover and learn. 

We have included a Caterpillar unit and a Little Explorers multi-play system to provide 

a mixture of climbing, crawling and sensory play. A Log Train is great for role play, 

a Shelter for outdoor learning, and a Play Store to provide extra storage.

Early Years: 3-5 Years Play Area 

As children enter the later stages of their early years’ development they are more 

eager than ever to learn and explore everything in their surroundings. 

Your play area should advance on the younger equipment to help children further 

develop their skills. The equipment is perfect for encouraging physical, creative and 

social development; enhancing their problem solving and reasoning skills. 


We have included a selection of imaginative play and role play products, including: a Play Ship, 

Log Train and Play Train. A mixture of Adventure Trail products are great to help develop agility 

and balance, and a Storytelling Chair with Toadstools for outdoor learning and reading time.

Key Stage 1 Play Area 

At Key Stage 1 children begin to build on the skills they have 

developed in Early Years. The play equipment designed for this 

age range allows children to combine learning with play. 

When designing your Key Stage 1 play area we recommend choosing a selection of exciting 

sensory play equipment that will give children the opportunity to explore, learn and interact 

with other pupils. A Musical Play area and a Sand and Water Play area are great to teach 

children about different sounds and textures. A Campervan Combo aids role play and social 

interaction, while the Environmental Play products will teach children about sustainable living.

Key Stage 2 Play Area 

Our Key Stage 2 play equipment provides a wealth of opportunities to 

challenge, inspire and excite pupils of all interests and abilities. 

We would suggest using a wide variety of play equipment to create an outdoor environment

Case Studies 

Widehorizons Townsend 

Centre, Dorset 

Widehorizons Townsend Centre were delighted 

to add a new Playdale play area to their already 

impressive outdoor education and activities 

centre, and local school children were also excited 

to make full use of the new equipment. 

There are a number of Widehorizons Centres throughout 

the UK that provide outdoor education activities to 

children of all age groups, giving children the opportunity 

to visit the countryside and experience adventure learning. 

Pupils from South Rise Primary School were over 

the moon to attend the opening and have their 

picture taken with the new play equipment. 

The play area features a range of Adventure Trail 

equipment, designed to keep children active 

and aid different areas of physical development, 

including: Climbing Walls, Shuffle Bars, Rope 

Weaver, Rope Walk, and Chin Up Bars. 

Scott Johnson, Deputy Head of the Centre, was delighted 

with the play area and the service that we provided, 

saying: “From start to finish we have been pleased how 

our project has unfolded. The final Adventure Trail is a new 

addition to our Centre which has pride of place. Thank you

Vigo Infants School, 

Hampshire 

Vigo Infants School were returning customers 

to Playdale, as their existing playground was 

designed and installed by the company which 

they had been very happy with for many years. 

This project was to upgrade and enhance 

the play area with equipment that would 

provide an extra level of challenge for their 

pupils. The play area included a fantastic 

Jukebox Selection unit, Tunnel Net, Wobble 

Board and Log Walk. This provided a perfect 

mixture to test children’s climbing, crawling, 

scrambling, balancing and teamwork skills. 

The play equipment was complemented with 

some bright, vibrant Wet Pour surfacing, adding 

that extra touch to bring the play area to life. 

Clare Hannah, Head Teacher, was very happy 

with the end result. The children were delighted 

with the play area and a number of pupils 

referred to it as: “It’s cool”, “It’s fun”, “Awesome”.

To enhance your trail we have designed unique activities which provide a 

different dimension to your Adventure Trail. As well as providing fun and 

fitness, our Interactive Panel and corresponding Tags enable the child 

to interact with the equipment through games and activities.

can be installed in the most appropriate way to suit your 

requirements and specifications. Each of the products in 

this catalogue specifies the fixing options available. 

Steel Ground Fixing 

This is a high strength, highly 

durable system for installing 

playground equipment. Galvanised 

steel brackets are secured to the 

timber poles lifting them clear of the 

surface. The steel brackets are then 

concreted into holes in the ground. 

This method of fixing increases the 

life of the timber upright and offers 

an extensive 20 year guarantee.

compliance to the European Playground Safety Standard EN 1176. Our design layouts and installations 

also comply with the European Standards EN 1176 and 1177. 

The high quality of all our materials is continually monitored through our ISO 9001 certified Quality 

Assurance Procedures to ensure all the following specifications are met and are of a consistent quality. 


Laminated Timber Poles 

All high quality, round timber poles on Playdale equipment 

are produced from extremely slow grown pine from 

totally sustainable, managed forests with FSC or PEFC 

accreditation. Laminated timber vastly reduces the 

natural effect of fibre separation that causes splits in the 

poles - giving high strength, highly engineered timber 

poles. Laminated timber (Glulam) sections are produced 

according to EN386:2001. Extremely smooth, high quality 

machined finish in 140mm, 130mm, 120mm, 112mm, 

100mm, 88mm and 70mm diameters. The glued joint is 

even stronger than the timber itself. Strict quality control 

ensures consistency through continual tests during the 

production process. All protruding edges are finished 

with a machined radius to give a smooth and splinter 

free finish in accordance with EN 1176. Following the final 

stage of machining, all timber poles are pressure treated 

in accordance with EN 351-1 and EN 335-2 with Chronium 

and Arsenic free preservative in accordance with the 

latest EU directive.Covered by a 20 year guarantee 

against structural failure due to rot or infestation 

when above ground level (i.e. all horizontals and 

vertical timbers used in conjunction with Playdale’s 

steel ground fixing brackets). Covered by 15 year 

guarantee against structural failure due to rot 

or infestation when timbers in the ground. 

Steel Ground Fixings 

Manufactured from steel sections and plate produced to 

the relevant European standards. Hot dip galvanised in 

accordance with ISO 1461.

Structural Stainless Steel 

All structural stainless steel frames constructed from pipe 

and box section with 3mm wall thickness, 304 grade 

stainless steel.

Platforms and floors on towers, playhouses and rotating 

units are made from 13mm thick Compact Grade

Coloured Panels are produced from 12mm thick Compact

bearings consist of self lubricating polymer bushes 

with stainless steel machined shackle pins. Antiwrap 

swing bearings consist of custom design self 

lubricating Acetal bushes with outer stainless steel 

strap. Other bearings are high quality sealed bearings. 


Bolts 

Bolts are from high corrosion resistant treated, high 

tensile steel or grade 304 stainless steel. On stainless steel 

products all bolts are from grade 304 stainless steel. Heavy 

duty security coach screws are from stainless steel. All nuts 

are nylock nuts of grade 304 stainless steel. 

All structural bolts are covered by a 10 year 

guarantee against structural failure. All 

other fixings and bolts are covered by a 5 

year guarantee against structural failure. 

Plastic Caps 

Custom made, durable plastic caps cover all standard 

nuts and bolts throughout the range to give a smooth 

and tamper resistant fixing point. Made from tough, 

UV stabalised plastics designed to prevent vandals but 

allow future maintenance of the equipment. Custom 

made plastic spacers are used between timber pole 

joints to give increased support, improved appearance, 

and remove any risk of children trapping fingers. 


Security Fixings 

Made from stainless steel (grade A2) for 

strength and corrosion resistance. 

Covered by a 10 year guarantee 

against structural failure. 

Plastic Components 

Plastic components are from UV stabilised 

Nylon, High Density Polyethylene or PVC. 


Scramble Net, Rope Climb Ground 

Anchors and Moulded Seats 

Moulded from polyurethane and impact tested in 

full compliance with EN 1176 and EN 1177. 


Suspension Joints 

Constructed of a painted steel outer and inner section 

with a high quality natural rubber suspension. 


Springs 

Manufactured from 18mm or 19mm diameter high quality 

spring steel. After coiling, the spring is phosphorised 

and then coated with a tough, durable polyester paint. 


Aerial Runway Platform 

Tough, fibred synthetic grass is used to give excellent 

grip and ensure the sand fill is held in place. Shock 

pads are used beneath the grass to give the required 

critical fall height for the Aerial Runway ramp in 

full accordance with EN 1176 and EN 1177. 


Cross Grips 

Used on some Adventure Trail items, this machined grip 

pattern gives a slip resistant surface in all conditions. 

Product Labels 

Stainless Steel or Anodised Aluminium tags with all 

required information in accordance with EN 1176 are 

fixed to each piece of equipment before despatch. The 

product reference and year of supply are type pressed 

into the surface of each tag to ensure the required 

information is still in place for years to come. 

Springers Material 

Specification 

All Springers have been independently tested by TUV 

as proof of compliance to BS EN 1176. 

All springers are covered by a 5 year guarantee. 

Springs 

All springs are manufactured from 18mm diameter 

high quality spring steel. After coiling, the spring is 

phosphorised and then coated with a tough, durable 

polyester paint. 

Coloured Body Panels 

15mm thick solid coloured polyethylene board. This 

specially formulated material requires little or no 

maintenance, can be 100% recycled, is UV stabilised 

with a 5 year guarantee against fading and is non toxic in 

accordance with the Toy Directive EN 71. 

Seats 

All seats and standing surfaces are manufactured from 

15mm polyethylene with a slip resistant 3mm surface. 

Steel Brackets 

Pressed steel plates with galvanised finish. 

Moulded Parts 

Custom made from tough, durable nylon in a range of 

colours. 

Caps 

All nuts and bolts are covered with custom made plastic 

caps to give a smooth, safe and tamper resistant fixing 

point. 

Bolts 

All bolts are stainless steel (grade A2) or corrosion resistant 

treated steel bolts. 

All springers are covered by a 5 year guarantee. 

Guarantees 

Note 1 

All guarantees cover failure arising from material or manufacturing 

defects. General wear and tear through use, damage caused 

by vandalism or defects resulting from work carried out by a 

third party are not covered by our guarantees. 

Note 2 

Guarantees cover the full cost of the faulty parts. Additional 

fitting and associated surfacing cost are excluded.
