Hi there,
I’m Sona and excited to present to you my
first comic book. This story is about a young
superhero trying to teach the world that long term
sustainability and survival is more important than
short term economic gains. I became passionate
about the issue of climate change when my town
in Chennai India was flooded – my family and I
helped people who were displaced but tragically,
lives were destructed and even lost. We need to
take action on climate change!
As an artist, I believe in the power of visuals to
help inspire positive action. So when I saw the
Climate Comic Contest by UNICEF and Comics
Uniting Nations, I decided to submit my art.
I didn’t expect it, but out of almost 3,000 superhero
submissions, my hero TRe` was selected as a
finalist. After people from 162 countries voted on
their favourite hero, I won!
With thanks to my mentors at DeCheser Media
and the support of UNICEF and Comics Uniting
Nations, I am thrilled to share with you the story
of TRe`.
This comic is dedicated to the young climate heroes in every corner of the
globe who are using their passions and skills to protect the planet.
The Climate Comic Contest demonstrated the powerful creativity that young
people possess. It also highlighted the fierce dedication that young people
have towards protecting the planet.
This contest engaged young people from 162 countries. To acknowledge the
common need to address climate change and to celebrate the worldwide
demand from young people to protect the planet, we have included three
bonus comic spreads of three finalists from the contest as a special edition.
While Sona is from India, the three featured finalists represent other regions.
Emerson is 9 years old from Malaysia, Juliette is 19 years old from Cuba and
Lolita is 15 years old from France. We also hope you enjoy select images
of contest submissions, showcasing the range of superheroes we received.
Comics are a universal language that reach us across nations.
As they inspired us, we hope these stories inspire you to creatively raise
awareness and take climate action in your communities and for our shared
home, Earth.
Destiny
Written by Lolita Curtol and calssmates
finalist of Climate Comic Contest
Illustrated by Natalia Bello
Our Earth is slowly getting
warmer and being destroyed as
humans mistreat the environment.
There are people who are
changing their ways, but some still
need convincing...
Our Company is
expanding soon,
building a new branch.
We can finally
get a new car!
There are some..
complications, though
Who here has heard the story of Destiny?
When children believe in her, Destiny
helps them protect the Earth in Dreamworld.
Yes, some scientists and activists are
againgt us. Some nonsense about
pollution and danger to wildlife.
That doesn’t sound good, om. Maybe you
should listen to them. In school we’re
learning about climate change and-
Don’t worry
sweeties, that’s
only a problem
in other
countries.
It’s all over the news.
Momand Dad’s car factory
is polluting the air and water.
We know you’re
out there Destiny.
Please help our
parents make
the right choice.
How can we
help them
understand?
In Dreamworld, Destiny fills the heads
of skeptics with nightmares to
show the potential future of the plaet.
If humans continue to use up Earth’s resources...
Your Destiny depends
on your choices.
What will you choose?
Did we have the
same dream?
I think so...
We can still change.
It’s not too late.
I like you car!
The new solar panels
look great AND help
the planet.
The air outside
has been so
fresh lately.
Thanks! Our company
makes electric cars now.
Do you think
Destiny visited
Mom and Dad?
Thanks to our kids,
this really is a
dream come true!
