The Afina 3950 is the ultimate expression of our challenge to the
status quo. Instead of simply following a checklist, we decided to completely
reimagine what your boat should be. Climb aboard, and the first things you
notice are lavish features that make a statement about who you are.
From unique features like power windows and a retractable roof
providing integrated climate control, to a hull that planes quickly coupled
with easy maneuverability – this elevates boating into an art form. The
Afina has exceptional stability, shallow draft, and planes quickly even when
fully loaded.
The first truly convertible boat ever built, the Afina comes standard with a
large retractable salon roof that transforms your yachting experience in
a mere 25 seconds with power windows so you can boat in total comfort.
18 TH ANNUAL BLIND FISHING
DERBY SET FOR JULY 21
tourismkelowna.com/ Shawn Talbot Photography
The Kelowna Yacht Club. This is a volunteer-based event where Kelowna Yacht Club
members donate their time, efforts, and fishing equipment for the visually impaired.
Whether you’re a volunteer or a participant, the annual
2018 Blind Fishing Derby at the Kelowna Yacht Club offers
the chance to share the boating lifestyle for a day.
Every year the Kelowna Yacht Club and its powerboat
members get together for the annual
Blind Fishing Derby, which offers the chance
for the visually impaired to enjoy a day on the
water guided by members and volunteers of the
Kelowna Yacht Club.
In its 18th year, The Blind Fishing Derby is
scheduled for July 21, 2018 on the Commodore’s
Dock at the Kelowna Yacht Club and is
devised to offer a focused, annual event to bring
together the local blind community with the
boating community of the Kelowna Yacht Club.
All visually-impaired individuals in the area are
invited to attend and as the name implies, fish-
ing is a large part of the event but has expanded
in recent years with narrated, guided cruising
tours.
“Whether it’s the smell of fresh air and the wind
in your hair or the excitement and rush of a fish
tugging on the end of your line, nothing compares
to being out on the water,” according to a
release from the Kelowna Yacht Club.
A volunteer-based event where Kelowna Yacht
Club members donate their time, efforts, and
fishing equipment, the Blind Fishing Derby
kicks-off at 8:30 a.m., when guests, guides and
volunteers will be introduced over coffee, tea
PLAY SAFE ON THE
WATER THIS SEASON
The RCMP Marine Patrol Units are hitting Okanagan Lake
this summer and it’s best to ensure you adhere
to boating safety laws.
As the boating season is well underway, now
is the time – if you haven’t already – to think
about boating safety, as well as updating mandatory
boating gear, and practising common sense
on the water as the RCMP Marine Patrol Unit
is once again enforcing boating safety laws on
Okanagan Lake.
With marine patrol units monitoring Okanagan
Lake throughout Vernon, Kelowna and
Penticton, it’s best to be prepared and knowledgeable
about boating safety laws to not only
avoid a fine but to be safe as possible for you
and everyone onboard.
“This is a very positive effort,” says Cpl. Dan
Moskaluk, Media Relations Officer for the RCMP
South East District. “There’s a dedicated team of
reserve constables that run the patrol program on
a regular basis and it’s bolstered with over-time
resources in West Kelowna, Penticton and Vernon.
We simply reinforce and remind people of
the Canadian boating safety laws.”
According Moskaluk, one of the key efforts are
random spot checks, devised to ensure you have
the mandatory safety equipment, possess a Pleasure
Craft Operator Card, are not exceeding load
capacity, and if there are certain offences involv-
and just some of the key areas where
the RCMP will be patrolling.
Mooring is enjoyable for all boaters. Always be
courteous and keep noise to respectable levels.
ing alcohol. Random spot checks also extend to
public boat launches and if you’re anchored, enjoying
the day with family or friends, the Marine
Patrol Unit can approach your vessel and do a random
safety check right then and there.
Alcohol and Boating
While its always enjoyable to relax with a cold one
while mooring, according to Transport Canada
alcohol can only be consumed on a pleasure craft
if it has permanent sleeping facilities, permanent
cooking facilities, a permanent toilet and is anchored
(or secured alongside a dock). Operating
while impaired is an offence under the criminal
code and if you’re caught driving while under the
influence you will be charged.
“Public awareness regarding the dangers of mixing
alcohol and operating a vessel (boat) is a lot better
than what it used to be,” says Moskaluk. “While
there’s a lot of responsibility from the majority of
boaters, there’s always a small percentage who ignore
this law. It’s not all that uncommon to enter
into an impaired situation during spot checks.”
WHAT YOU CAN DO
Regulations such as giving right-of-way to nonmotorized
pleasure craft, being courteous to
no-wake zones, and not operating your boat
recklessly (or dangerously) are all standard procedures
and are exactly what the Marine Patrol
Unit monitors. Other common issues boaters
need to avoid is creating excess noise – either
by partying with friends and loud music or running
with open exhaust systems on performance
boats.
“What has really helped with boating safety
among boaters is the inception of the Transport
Canada-accredited course providers for the
Pleasure Craft Operator Card,” explains Moskaluk.
“It’s a really good foundation course and
the more you become educated, the more enjoyment
you’re going to have on the water.”
equipment, here are a few added tips to further enhance
safety on the water this season.
Watersports are popular in many boating destinations
across Canada and the Okanagan is one
of them. Calm conditions, deep water and wideopen
spaces all provide the perfect conditions.
However, be sure to follow these five sensible –
and important – suggestions to make the most
out of your next day on the water.
The Driver Drives the Boat:
The Spotter Watches the Rider
It’s always exciting to watch a buddy land a “toeside
back roll with a frontside 360,” but what lies
ahead on the water is a little more important.
Swimmers, paddleboarders, and oncoming vessels
are all part of a busy lake. Remember that the
driver drives the boat – period – and simply listens
to the directions from the spotter, informing
the driver of speed adjustments, if the rider has
fallen, etc. The driver needs to be very attentive of
what lays ahead in front of the boat. Let the spotter
advise on what happens behind it.
Know Your Lake
Shallow water, rocky shoals and underwater obstructions
are all common with any given lake.
It’s best to scout out an ideal location before hand
Tubing is great fun, but requires
some important safety practices.
Always the use the swim platform or boarding
ladder to get in or out of the water (never use the
outdrive or outboard).
Malibu Boats
and set a large perimeter of where the rider is taken
on a run. Establishing an area is also an indicator
for other boaters to yield to or stay clear from
in the area. When enjoying watersports from a
dock, learn about fluctuating water levels every
season, and never run parallel to shore in shallow
water. If you are unfamiliar with the lake, simply
visit the local marina or ask local boaters where
the best place is to go for the day.
Tubing Safety
Tubing is perhaps one of the most popular pastimes
as it is fast, exhilarating, and plenty of fun
with two or three other riders. Yet, as much of the
control is in the driver’s hands, common sense
and judgement all play key roles in everyone’s
safety. In fact, according to the Water Sports Industry
Association (WSIA) some important facts
to understand include:
• Never exceed more than 32 km/h (20 mph)
• Follow the warning labels on the inflatable and
tow rope.
• The tube can slowly deflate due to the heat of
the sun or temperature of the water.
• Use a tube-specific tow rope rated for the appropriate
number of riders.
• Inspect the tow rope connection point before
use. If the inflatable separates from the boat
during a turn, it can be sent on an uncontrolled
path.
• An inflatable should never get any closer than
twice the rope length to shore, other boats or
obstacles.
• Drivers must understand the inflatable’s trajectory
as it can travel at a wide arc and high
speed (sometimes more than the boat) during
turns or whipping.
Entering the Boat and Water
The aspects of getting in and out of the water or
retrieving a fallen rider may seem straight forward,
yet it does require some important safety
measures. When entering the water from the boat
(or vice versa), rule number one is to always shut
off the engine when the rider is near the boat.
Remember, even when the engine is in neutral,
the prop(s) still spins and can potentially cause
injury. It’s always wise to wait a few seconds for
the prop to completely stop. Always use the swim
platform or boarding ladder to get in or out (and
never resort to the outdrive or outboard).
Additionally, a spotter must always confirm the
location of the rider in the water before or after a
run and the driver should approach fallen riders
on the driver’s side to maintain a clear view of
their location. Never back up to them.
Be Neighbourly, Courteous and Safe
Ask most cottagers along the waterfront about
noise disturbance from wakeboarders, skiers or
tubers and they will have a story to share. The
WSIA recommends staying at least 45 metres
(150 ft) from shore as it’s not only courteous
to residents, but it’s safer for swimmers, other
boaters, and paddle boarders. It also limits disturbing
wakes.
Additionally, music is commonly enjoyed among
enthusiasts and all to often it helps pump up the
action. Yet, if the latest Pearl Jam release can be
heard at 30 km/h (18 mph) 20 m (70 ft.) behind
the boat over the constant running of the engine,
it can most likely be heard by local cottagers or
other moored boats. For those enjoying watersports
from a dock, be to sure plan a course away
from shore and keep passes along the shoreline
to a minimum.
