SOUTHERN VIEW [Edition datE] SOUTHERN VIEW Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Tuesday April 24 2018 19 37 NEW PROJECT TO PROVIDE MORE SOCIAL HOUSING IN HORNBY Artist’s impression of the new build in Lesley Keast Place Over the next few months, Housing Plus Charitable Foundation is establishing a housing project in Lesley Keast Place, Hornby alongside four other not-for-profit entities. The foundation’s new build, which is a steel fame construction, comprises eight duplex units housing two tenants each, and three two-bedroom cottages set in landscaped grounds. The eight duplex units belong to Housing Plus, while the three cottage units will be owned and managed by the Methodist Mission in conjunction with Housing Plus. They will be ready for tenanting in July. Housing Plus is a new trust arising out of work undertaken by the Beckenham Community Housing Trust (BCHT), which oversees a project at Lancewood Courts in Beckenham. The model, which was developed in partnership with the Christchurch City Council, has been operating for over 16 years and has proved successful in housing people that benefit from being in a secure environment with low-level support, but do not require 24-hour care. “These are people who often fall through the cracks of good housing provision and because of relative poverty and other issues can end up in very poor, unsatisfactory housing in unsafe environments,” Housing Plus spokesperson Margaret Willis says. “The combination of high-quality housing, independent living arrangements and low-level, on-site support at Lancewood Courts has provided a safe and solid base for tenants, who are then freer to attend to other issues in their lives.” Residents’ comments from the latest external report on the project reflect this, she says. They include: “It feels like my home. Like a sanctuary from the outside world.” “I came here depressed and discouraged and isolated. I was totally alone – not now…I love to come back here. You can be yourself.” “I am much happier here. No one hassles you.
