Buying gifts for men often poses a problem
– the choice between socks and aftershave
doesn’t seem much of a choice, somehow.
However, thanks to a unique shop in
London Street, Lyttelton, the problem
can be easily solved. Air, Sea & Land has a
huge array of fascinating items based on
that theme, and with a general ‘boy’s own
adventure’ feel about it, too.
Owners Malcolm and Anne Carne have
been running their gift shop and picture
framing business in the port township
for 18 years, and 18 months ago, decided
to “reinvent” themselves by focusing on
merchandise that would appeal particularly
to men – although as Malcolm points out,
many women also find it fascinating.
Items with a sea or maritime theme include
a selection related to polar exploration
(Antarctic explorers Scott and Shackleton
were both based out of Lyttelton), compasses,
and a replica diver’s helmet in brass and
copper.
The land theme is represented in die cast
model cars, motorbikes, scooters and other
vehicles, as well as items with a railway
connection, while aviation-related items
include books and a wide selection of framed
prints depicting wartime aircraft and many
others.
Other fascinating collectible items from
days gone by include framed collections of
original cigarette cards, which are at least 80
years old, while there is also a wide selection
of greeting cards with illustrations from the
1930s and ’40s.
Custom framing is the other aspect
of the business, and Malcolm is a
Guild Commended Framer, an English
qualification for which he was trained in
conservation framing. As he explains, this
means he has the knowledge and
experience to use the right materials and
methods to frame any type of artwork,
including valuable original art. With a
huge selection of mouldings and matt
boards, he will provide the right frame for
any artwork – original or print.

Monday to Friday from 9am-5pm and
