Filmmaker records candidates
• By Sarla Donovan
GOVERNORS BAY filmmaker
Tony Simpson is turning his
hand to politics.
In a filmic sense that is.
The Kiwi Christmas director
has joined forces with film
editor Scott Flyger to record
candidates for the upcoming
Banks Peninsula Community
Board by-election.
The five aspirants talk about
their experiences, skills and vision,
along with some personal
background information.
And it’s all posted online.
Mr Simpson said he wanted a
better way of getting to know get
to know candidates than wading
through a booklet.
“You flick through it and go,
‘I can’t be bothered reading
all of this because there’s so
many people to get to know.’
In this day and age there has
to be a better way. I thought,
what if you could just look on
your phone? Everybody’s got a
smartphone these days. The byelection
in Lyttelton was right
on the back door step and with
only a few people it seemed an
ideal place to try it out and proof
the concept,” he said.
Both the board and the candidates
have embraced the idea.
Tyrone Fields said it had been
ON CAMERA: Tony Simpson films candidate Tyrone Fields.
an interesting process. “We were
all probably a little bit amateur
when it comes to presenting on
camera.”
Mr Simpson said he wanted
to bring the election system into
the 21st-century and use technology
to increase the number
of voters.
“I’m keen to vote for someone
to represent me but I don’t
know who they are. And
reading something in a booklet
isn’t quite the same as seeing
someone in person, presenting
themselves and getting their
ideas across. It’s amazing how
quickly you can get to know
someone in a short sequence
like this. I’m quite excited about
it.”
And if it comes off, he’d love
to see something similar rolled
out for next year’s local body
elections.
CHLORINE ROLL OUT
Chlorine is due to be added to
the Ferrymead and Lyttelton
zones this week and Wainui
next week. The Ferrymead zone
stretches from Woolston east to
Taylors Mistake and supplies 8500
properties. The Lyttelton zone
supplies about 3000 properties
in Lyttelton, Governors Bay and
Diamond Harbour. Once they
are chlorinated, the temporary
chlorination programme will be
complete.
MONCKS BAY SEAWALL
Temporary repairs will be
undertaken to fix seawall damage
alongside the Moncks Bay
footpath, between the tram stop
and Shag Rock. Deterioration
from storm surges and high tides
has prompted the city council to
investigate temporary repairs to
the sea wall.
BUCK STAYS AS CHAIR
Sally Buck will remain Linwood-
Central-Heathcote Community
Board chairwoman after board
members gave her their full
support. Bay Harbour News
last week reported Ms Buck’s
intention to stand down after 18
months as chairwoman. But after
a motion to elect a new chair at
last Wednesday’s meeting failed to
find a seconder, Ms Buck agreed
to continue in the role.
