Views on Redcliffs village collected
• By Sarla Donovan
MORE THAN 40 people gave
feedback at public drop-in
sessions on the Redcliffs village
enhancement plans last week.
With $480,000 set aside for
amenity upgrades and beautification,
the city council is consulting
on what the community
wants to see happen in the area.
An additional $408,000 is
earmarked for a car park, pedestrian
crossing and bus stop on
the south side of Moncks Bay,
past the Christchurch Yacht
Club building.
Redcliffs Residents
Association member Peter Croft
said he wanted to see “changes
and alterations that are for the
benefit of the village, so people
can stop, shop and enjoy their
surroundings. Some proper,
nice landscaping to the standard
we see in Sumner.”
He also asked for reduced
speeds through the village
and small speed bumps at the
entrance.
Moncks Bay residents
Sheryl and Matt Sawyer were
at the final drop-in session
held at Redcliffs Library last
Wednesday.
They had scootered around
from their home to talk about
their ideas for the village.
Sculptures, colour-coded
smart rubbish bins and coastal
pathway information boards
were some of the items on their
wish list.
“And if they’re putting trees in
around the seating area, I’d like
them to be bird-friendly. Maybe
fruit trees?’ said Mrs Sawyer.
Redcliffs Residents
Association secretary Pat
McIntosh was also at the
Wednesday session, dropping in
on her way home from work.
She wanted to know whether
toilets could be included in the
plans, as the village had been
without a public loo since the
Barnett Park toilet block was
destroyed in the February 22,
2011, earthquake.
And she questioned the need
for a 20-space car park in Moncks
Bay.
“The amount of money is
almost as much as is being spent
on the entire village. Why is
that necessary? I’ve never heard
any resident say they wanted a
