The End of a Love Story
I really don’t know where to start. The
loss of your first pony is so heartbreaking
Jorja absolutely loved Argus Love Story
(Mable) to bits and although she was full
of life enjoying retirement she was taken
from us so suddenly and unexpectedly.
Mable has a list of
achievements so long
we couldn’t possibly
name them all, she was
amazing. Together they
won numerous rosettes
and trophies sashes and
championships. From
lead rein to dressage
she excelled at them all winning the
Equestrian Life dressage championship
twice, both Intro and Preliminary; her
last one was last year where she won
both classes and was highest placed
Veteran which was a very proud moment
for Jorja and emotional as it was getting
close to her having to retire as Jorja had
outgrown her.
We consider ourselves to have been so
lucky to have found such an amazing
pony and lucky that Jorja was slow
growing so we could keep her for so
much longer than most first ponies. She
even managed a brief appearance on
Rudells Round Up for the Team Quest
programme and the
amount of times that
got replayed I can’t say
but it was quite a lot.
She became a first
and second pony for
Jorja, giving us all as a
family so many happy
memories, we won’t
forget her from her cheeky little bucks to
her impromptu trumping she gave us so
much joy.
From the very first day Jorja made her a
promise for her not to go anywhere else
she was staying with her forever now. We
just never in a million years imagined it
would be so soon and sudden.
Goodnight Mable, sleep tight.
Legend...a true story
by Elizabeth Spencer
During WWII, Elizabeth Spencer
went to live with her Granny and
Gramps in Devon. Elizabeth’s
grandmother, Mrs Ruth Howard,
was a show producer and
despite only being five years
old, Elizabeth immediately fell
in love with three year old colt
‘Legend’ whose grand sire was
the well renowned show pony ‘Love Song’
belonging to Mrs Muntz of the Foxhams’ stud.
By the time Elizabeth was seven years old she and
Legend had become champions at the RIHS going
on to win the Rawnsley Cup three years running
and returning to the show ring to win the Pony
Championship at the first ever HOYS in 1948.
This beautifully produced book tells Elizabeth and
Legend’s story in her words, with the addition of
illustrations by Elizabeth, now Lady Kitson OBE DL
member of the Society of Equestrian Artists.
