HOW WILL
YOU GET
ACTIVE IN
UCKFIELD THIS
SPRING?
Angela O’Neill
Editor
Spring is a good time to try new things - an air of
positivity and possibility prevails, so what better 'new
thing' to try than a new activity or sport? Our 'spring
into sport' feature (p11) outlines many of the good
reasons to make healthy changes now, and has lots
of ideas of activity to get involved in, in and around
Uckfield. Active Uckfield held their first public meeting
this last week, and bringing together so many groups at
one time is really inspiring (see more on p31).
For an added splash of newness, why not take the
family to visit some spring baby animals? Zoe has lots
of ideas of where to go on p18.
Turn to page 38 for some toothy tips form Bex. On page
46 we start three pages of sport. Michelle finds out
about the benefits of sports massage on 52, and Sue
ponders the benefits of sports for businesses and their
staff.
editors notes
On page 58 you can learn all about local cycling group,
the MUckfield Wheelers, and of course there's the
Month that was, thanks to Ron Hill and his camera.
Uckfield Volunteer Centre invites you to get active in
the garden on p29, and there's information about free
health screening from the Lions on p25.
SPRING
INTO
by Angela O’Neill
It’s spring time – the days are (thankfully) longer, warmer and being out doing
activity feels more pleasant. And with strong scientific evidence that being
physically active can help you lead a healthier and happier life, it's is a perfect
time to start to live a more active lifestyle. Try something new today, and by the
time those damp, dark days come round again you will have made changes to
the way you live your life you'll want to stick with.
Uckfield has so many
activities to suit all
ages, abilities and
sensibilities. From the
gentle to the intensive,
sweat-inducing and
high-energy competitive
sports, every activity
counts. NHS Choices says
people who do regular
activity have a lower risk
of chronic diseases such
as heart disease, type
2 diabetes, stroke, and
some cancers. Research
shows that physical
activity can also boost
self-esteem, mood, sleep
quality and energy, and
reduce your risk of stress,
depression, dementia
and Alzheimer’s. It’s
also proven that people
who do regular physical
activity have up to a 35%
lower risk of coronary
heart disease and stroke;
up to a 50% lower risk of
type 2 diabetes; a lower
risk of certain types of
cancers; and up to a 30%
lower risk of early death.
HOW MUCH, HOW
OFTEN, AND HOW DO I
KNOW IT’S WORKING?
To stay healthy,
adults should try to be
active daily and aim
to achieve at least 150
minutes of physical
activity over a week
through a variety of
activities. Children under
5 should do 180 minutes
every day, and young
people (5-18) 60 minutes
every day.
For any activity to benefit
your health, you need to
be moving fast enough
to raise your heart rate,
breathe faster and feel
warmer. This is called
moderate intensity
activity, and you can tell
if you're working at this
level if you can still talk
but can't sing the words to
a song.
to bring together
groups and clubs and
to promote healthier
living in Uckfield
and the surrounding
areas, says: “There
are a surprising
number of sports
groups and clubs in
Uckfield - some of
them are very small,
and most are run by
volunteers. Without
these volunteers, the
opportunities simply
wouldn’t be there,
but it’s so important
for our community’s
wellbeing.
“We are also seeing
growth amongst gyms
in the area, with
specialist facilities –
such as Polefit and
Crossfit - providing
a very different type
of activity to the
traditional. With
Anytime Fitness
giving people 24x7
access to a gym, and
Isenhurst and Freedom
Leisure investing in
refurbishments of their
gyms, this is a great
time to get fit, inside as
well as out.
“Uckfield is also unique
in the area, as we
have the all-weather
pitch available and it
is very well utilised by
so many of our town’s
And, for those who
aren’t competitive, or
don’t enjoy a gymbased
CLEANING UP AFTER
MAN’S BEST FRIEND
Whether you are a dog
owner or not, we all
know how unpleasant
it can be to come across
dog poo on the pavement
or playing field. And it
is even worse if you step
in it or go through it
with your pushchair or
wheelchair. Not only does
it smell unpleasant but
also it is unhygienic and
spreads diseases - some
of which can have a lifechanging
impact.
Uckfield Town Council
is tackling this issue
in the town with a
new communications
campaign that will
continue throughout
OPENING HOURS

newsinbrief
We know that most dog
owners in the town are
responsible and clear up
after their pets. However,
we will be running
a communications
campaign throughout
2018 to remind all
dog owners about the
importance of cleaning
up the little 'messages'
left by their dogs.”
Uckfield has a large
number of litter bins
sited across the town
and, as part of the
communications
campaign, the council
will be putting up posters
around the playing fields
and residential areas to
remind people that they
can bag and drop their
dog poo into any litter
bin.
In addition, we are
planning to introduce
dog poo bag dispensers at
various locations across
the town.
GOVERNMENT CASH
BOOST ‘GREAT NEWS
FOR EAST SUSSEX’
A £16.7 million funding
boost to support the
building of more than
1,000 new homes in East
Sussex has been hailed by
council chiefs.
The cash for projects
in Battle, Eastbourne,
Hastings and Lewes,
was announced in the
first wave of funding
for ‘marginal viability
proposals’ from the
Government’s £2.3 billion
Housing Infrastructure
Fund.
It will be used for
projects such as new
roads, schools, health
centres and energy
and digital networks to
accommodate growing
communities and to
ease pressure on public
services.
The funding is the result
or partnership working
by East Sussex County
Council, and district
and borough councils in
Eastbourne, Hastings,
Lewes, Rother and
Wealden.
If successful, the bid for
£32 million funding for
Wealden will be used to
address transport issues
in the Ashdown Forest,
increase education
provision in the south
of the district and
improve transport links
between Eastbourne and
SPORT BOOSTS BUSINESS
Taking time out for you can change the way you work
communitymatters
businessmatters
by Sue Edwards
We all look forward to spring. The thought of better, warmer weather and longer
days gives us all a boost. No doubt this will give your business a boost too!
STEP AWAY FROM YOUR SCREEN
Exercise should be another critical
part of everyday life. It's too easy to
stay rooted to your laptop or computer,
without going out all day. Like many of
us, no doubt, I find it almost impossible
to motivate myself to do exercise at
home. So, I do weekly yoga classes. Our
family have never been a sporty lot, but
I have always enjoyed yoga. I have been
going to yoga classes regularly since my
early 20s, and initially started going with
my Mum. I remember how the whole
class laughed at clicking joints and other
funny noises. Nowadays this happens
even more, a common result that we are
well aware of, comes with age.
ACTIVE LOCAL BUSINESS
My yoga class nowadays is with the
Yoga Studio in Uckfield High Street. In
fact, the Studio has a range of classes
and yoga teachers to choose from, as
some forms of yoga don't suit everybody.
Another great benefit of my yoga is
that it is my time to switch off and
concentrate on me. Many of us I am
sure, particularly Mums with a family,
spend precious little time looking after
their bodies.
Yoga is an exercise that anyone can
do, no matter what your age or ability,
even if you are disabled. Unlike many
other sports, there is no competition.
All postures are done at your speed,
although it's important to be mindful
of what your body can and can't do. As
for me, I am the only one who cannot
do at least 50% of the class, due to a
back problem. However, I don't let that
stop me; I use a chair instead. This may
sound odd, but it works for me, and in
fact, some of the postures are harder
when modified.
HEALTHY BODY, HEALTHY MIND
Sometimes I don't feel like going, but I
know I always feel better after the class.
It keeps me supple, helps me relax and
helps me switch off, bringing peace of
mind. Everyone, whatever their age,
whether they work or are retired, should
ideally spend some time in their week
doing some form of exercise. Whatever
they enjoy and works for them.
If yoga isn't for you, there are plenty
of other sports and activities available
in the town. There are local running
and bike clubs, and of course, there
are several gyms, as well as the leisure
centre. There are also the popular health
walks.
Lastly, my osteopath says "keep doing
yoga". So I do, and I am thankful that it
helps me and keeps me going.
LET THERE BE LESS LITTER
The Brighter Uckfield team has been working on whittling
down litter in and around the town
communitymatters
by Dorothy Sparks
Clearing litter, planting bulbs and preparing for the Great British Spring Clean
- it's all in a month's work for these helpful residents.
LITTER
This month, we concentrated our
activities on litter clearance. Project
work took a back seat due to poor
weather, but Sunday 28 January brought
a fantastic turnout of volunteers plus
new recruits and a student from UCTC
working her own project. Volunteers
collected over 20 bags of litter in 90
minutes, and a team pruned trees at the
junction of Batchelor Way and Bell Farm
Road. Luxford Car Park also received a
'brushing down' by volunteers.
NEW BULBS WITH ROTARIAN HELP
By the time you read this, we expect
Spring will have sprung, and we are
particularly looking forward to the first
year display of crocuses and daffodils
that we planted at Ringles Cross, at the
junction of Snatts Road and London
Road, in a joint effort by members of
Uckfield Rotary and ourselves.
GREAT BRITISH SPRING CLEAN
Keep Britain Tidy's "Great British Spring
Clean" takes place 2-4 March when
Brighter Uckfield volunteers will work
jointly with members of the Ouse and
Adur Rivers Trust to clear debris from
the town's River Uck and its banks.
LITTER ON COUNTY HIGHWAYS
Many of you will have seen the 'debate'
on social media regarding the poor state
of grass verges alongside the County's
trunk roads, with particular emphasis
given to the Uckfield by-pass. Brighter
Uckfield's 'webmaster' was the instigator
of the lively exchanges, and we will be
looking again at what more we can do to
improve the situation.
We are most grateful for the continued
support of residents. Let us know of
any messy spots or if you would like to
help. Ring 01825 768709 or contact via
Facebook @brighteruckfield. Any dirty
FREE HEALTH SCREENING
Uckfield Lions offer free prostate and diabetes screening
communitymatters
by Ellie Thackway
For the second year, Uckfield Lions is holding free prostate screening tests for
men aged 45-75.
Prostate cancer is the most common
cancer in men in the UK, and for the
first time earlier this year it overtook
female deaths from breast cancer,
making it the third biggest cancer killer.
Over 40,000 new cases are diagnosed
in the UK every year, but it can often
take many years for visible symptoms to
develop.
PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) testing
can indicate if a man has prostate
cancer, and Uckfield Lions are offering
this testing for free on April 7th,
organised by PCaSO. Lions clubs from
across the country have been providing
this service over the last few years, to
help ensure men with prostate cancer
can be diagnosed as soon as possible.
Last year in Uckfield, 110 men were
tested at our prostate screening, and
this year we want to see even more.
At the same time, Uckfield Lions will be
running free diabetes testing for both
men and women. Diabetes is the eighthleading
cause of death in the world,
and Lions have been taking action on
an international scale. Our initiatives
focus on raising awareness, providing
education, offering screening and
treatment and much more.
Prostate screening needs to be booked
in advance, but diabetes testing can be
provided just by you popping in. All the
tests are free for you, so please do come
and see us.
CROCUSES END POLIO
Planting the spring bulbs represents Rotary's role in the
'End Polio Now' campaign
PREVENTING POLIO WITH PURPLE
By now, the crocuses should be
providing a splash of purple. Purple
signifies the purple dye put on a child's
finger to show that the child has been
vaccinated against polio. Rotary is a
major contributor to ‘End Polio Now',
which has seen new cases of the disease
worldwide fall from an annual figure of
c. 350,000 in the 1980's, to just a handful
in 2017. Polio cannot be cured, but a
simple vaccine given to a child offers
life-long protection.
GARDENING FOR HEALTH
Get out and enjoy yourself – why gardening is the way
forward for health and wellbeing.
communitymatters
by Sophie Whelpton
Discovering growing plants from seeds can be a ‘lightbulb' moment. From
a little packet of seeds which costs under £2, you can grow an enormous
amount of flowers which give continual joy throughout the summer. If you
are planning a small cutting garden of flowers, you will be able to take flowers
everywhere you go without spending a single penny!
There are three groups of cut-andcome-again
flowers - annuals, biennials
and dahlias. With these three types of
flowers, the more you pick, the more
they will grow, the perfect qualification
for a cutting garden plant. You can still
use your perennial plants for greenery
and structure in your posies, but the
pride you'll get from growing your own
flowers for gifts for friends will give
huge joy.
Hardy annuals are the cheapest plants you
can cultivate, and all you need is a rake
and a hoe. When it comes to annuals,
biennials and dahlias, you can grow these
from tubers and seeds, and they are easy
in most soil types in full sun.
Now's the time to clean out the pots,
perhaps buy some miniature daff which
will flower over the next few weeks
and give you lots of pleasure. Why not
create your own little herb garden? If
you have a wide low pot that you're not
using, buy some soil and a few herbs,
plant them up and keep them by the
kitchen door so that you have fresh
chives, fresh rosemary or thyme a snip
away!
Gardening gives hope and pleasure and
is good for health, there's something
very special about growing a few trays
of seeds on the window sill and looking
forward to seeing the seeds grown into
plants, the plants grow into flowers, and
finally, you can give your friends a lovely
bunch of flowers.
GREEN FINGERED VOLUNTEERS
Make a change this spring, get into
gardening in however small way you
can and if you would be interested in
volunteering, have a look at the Do-It
website, where you can find some
volunteer gardening opportunities.
ACTIVITIES FOR YOUNG & OLD
Active Uckfield holds first public meeting
communitymatters
by Jeremy Hallett
Active Uckfield had their first public gathering of activity organisers on 22
February, with 27 people in attendance, representing a wide variety of activities
for young and old alike.
There is a strong belief that keeping
active is not just for the young!
Examples include 5 a-side football
having retirement age participants
whilst dance and running sees people in
their 70’s still very active. We had good
support from organisations covering all
ages and abilities.
It’s also not all about being very
active. Little, but often can work e.g.
walking to the shops and gardening or
walking football and netball. Activity
can be started by almost anyone and
it’s frightening to think that 26%
(that’s 1 in 4) children about to leave
primary school in Wealden District
are overweight or obese. Eating habits
and activities have changed – we can’t
reverse them easily, but if we don’t it’s
building problems for all of us.
an indicator that perception is indeed a
reality here.
Most activities are very keen to get
participants or if you can’t or don’t want
to take part they often value support.
Committee members, event assistants
or people helping communications
can all be done by people who don’t
participate but gain from being involved
in something they like. If you’re
interested in doing something why not
ask as there’s a good chance with the
range of activities going on that there is
something for most people.
It’s also not all about physical health as
being active helps with mental health.
Mental health is also not just about
labels as loneliness is a significant
factor in our general wellbeing. Is that
really a risk some may ask – well there
are more older people and single people
and single parents. There are also more
people in poor health so perhaps that is
TOOTHY TIPS
By Bex Maini from Olive Dragonfly Blog
Here are a few tips I give to my patients to ensure you're looking after your
teeth and gums as best you can. Of course, I recommend visiting your own
dentist for tailored advice and regular check ups.
BRUSHING ADVICE:
Brush your teeth twice a day, ideally
morning and before bed, with a
pea-sized amount of toothpaste for
children. This ensures children do not
ingest too much fluoride should they
swallow it rather than spitting out. We
recommend supervising (including
going over) children's brushing until at
least the age of seven to ensure it's being
done correctly.
If any acidic drinks are consumed (e.g.
fruit juice with breakfast), it's best to
brush beforehand or wait at least 1
hour so as not to remove micro layers of
enamel which may have been softened
by the acids.
Toothpaste should have at least
1000ppm of Fluoride. There are
different types of Fluoride but the
ingredients on the toothpaste will state
a "ppm" number, parts per million.
Anything less than this is not effective
enough in reducing the risk of decay
and some children's toothpastes have
only 500ppm.
When you've finished brushing your
teeth, spit out any toothpaste but DO
NOT rinse your mouth out. This leaves
any remaining toothpaste coating your
teeth and allows more of the Fluoride to
"soak in" to your teeth.
A soft brush is best and if you wish to
use a mouthwash, use it at a separate
time to brushing. Perhaps after a meal
to freshen up or between meals during
the day.
Use the Modified BASS technique when
brushing (you can find demo videos by
searching online) to ensure that you
are cleaning effectively around the gum
levels where plaque starts to gather.
Think of it as massaging your gums
with the toothbrush and if there's any
bleeding, this means you have gum
disease and need to be cleaning the
area more, not avoiding it. Brush for a
minimum of 2 minutes to ensure you're
reaching all areas effectively.
Flossing is important too and demos
can also be found online - use a gentle
sweeping action rather than sawing
floss between your teeth. You should
try to make flossing part of your daily
routine to ensure you keep it up and
not just for a couple of weeks after
your dentist/hygienist tells you to
floss. It may work best to make it part
34

of your bedtime routine when you're
not rushing trying to get yourself/your
family ready in a hurry in the morning.
I have written my advice for brushing
toddlers teeth and detailed our
techniques with the twins on my blog
as part of my Toothy Tips series if you'd
like to read more.
DIET ADVICE:
It is important to not only think about
the amount of sugar you eat but the
frequency and timing of it too. You
should try to avoid sugary foods
between meals, instead eating them as
part of a main meal and ending with
something savoury. A piece of cheese
after any dessert is ideal to reduce any
residual sugars and neutralise acids in
the mouth.
Avoid anything sugary before bed.
You naturally have less saliva in your
mouth at night so it will take longer to
balance things out in the mouth so after
brushing your teeth before bed, have
nothing else to eat or drink other than
water.
Avoid sticky sweets. If you're going to
have a sweet treat, stick to something
like chocolate which will melt and wash
away quicker than toffees for example.
Equally, other sticky sweets or hard
sweets keep sugars in your mouth for
too long so are best avoided.
The same goes for fruits, although
fruit is healthy and contains natural
unprocessed sugars, these sugars can do
as much damage as other forms of sugar
if consumed too often. It's also best
to stick to fresh fruit rather than dried
fruits for the same reasons as avoiding
sticky sweets. Dried fruits can linger in
the mouth for much longer and have a
higher concentration of sugar.
Hidden sugars can also be a danger,
things you may not think of as sweet can
contain a lot of sugar, examples include
ketchup and baked beans as well as
some yoghurts. You can buy reduced
sugar varieties of these but be aware
how often you're having them. Beware
of "no added sugar" items such as
squash, these still contain sugar. Only
"sugar free" products have no sugars in
them.
Be careful also with acidic things. I've
already mentioned waiting at least
1 hour to brush following eating or
drinking acidic things like fruit juice
and fizzy drinks but citric fruits, some
yoghurts and alcoholic drinks can
also be acidic and don't be fooled by
"healthy" smoothies, these can often
contain high levels of acid as well as
sugars.
You can find more information about
fabulous fluoride and sneaky sugars,
including good snack alternatives, as
well as my tips for brushing toddlers'
teeth all as part of my Toothy Tips series
on my blog, Olive Dragonfly.
5 POINTERS FOR GOOD DENTAL CARE:
1. Spit, don't rinse
2. Brush twice daily with pea-sized amount
for 2 minutes
3. Minimum 1000ppm Fluoride
4. Avoid sugary snacks between meals and
end on something savoury
5. Avoid sticky sugars and beware of hidden
sugars
Bedgebury
THIS MONTH'S DAY OUT Bedgebury Pinetum, Lamberhurst
You can find Bedgebury tucked away between Tunbridge Wells and Goudhurst. It’s a stunning
location which offers a wide range of activities for families and outdoor enthusiasts. Here are
just a few reasons why a day a Bedgebury is the perfect place to take the family this Spring:
36
1. The Gruffalo Trail allows you to explore
350 acres of woodland whilst keeping
the kids engaged. Bring every child’s
favourite story alive by exploring the
deep dark woods and meeting the
Gruffalo himself!
2. The recently added Highway Rat Trail
takes you to tucked away play areas and
picnic spots. As you go, look out for
characters from the story, complete four
rubbings and take your picture with the
life-sized Highway Rat Wanted poster.
3. Bedgebury offers a range of cycle trails
with something for everyone, from
beginners and families looking for a fun
day out, to adrenalin junkies looking for
a challenge. The family trail covers 10km
of track round the 2000 acre forest.
4. Bedgebury is also home to one of the
many brilliant GoApe courses. As well
as the adult course GoApe Bedgebury
also offers Tree Top Junior where kids
can enjoy a fun filled hour of canopy
exploring, awesome zip wires and jungle
obstacles. The course costs £18 and you
need to be a metre high to climb.
5. Entry to Bedgebury is charged per car.
Off peak the charge is £10; £12 during
peak times. This gives you access to the
Pinetum, Gruffalo and Highway Rat
trails, Cycle tracks and numerous play
areas!

BRING ON
SPRING
familymatters
by Zoe Holland
The past month has tested me. It’s the tail end of Winter and everyone is run
down and needing a hardcore dose of Vitamin D. This year February has been
particularly cold and unforgiving. But, just as I’m seriously considering packing
up with the family and moving to warmer shores for good...Spring casts it’s
pretty little spell and I’m enchanted. March...I’m so happy to welcome you back!
Despite the cold spells we’ve enjoyed
some gorgeous local days outdoors. I
took the children to visit Pooh Sticks
Bridge in Ashdown Forest on a crisp
Sunday afternoon. The walk is perfect
for little explorers. Logan and Daisy
were thrilled to find little front doors
hidden amongst the trees. Logan even
founds old hunny pots that Pooh must
have left behind! After a game of Pooh
Sticks we warmed up at Pooh Corner
cafe in Hartford with hot chocolates and
the biggest slice of Victoria Sponge I’ve
ever seen!
We’ve also spent a couple of days
stomping through the mud at
Wilderness Wood...one of our favourite
places to explore. Logan loved
making mud pies whilst the older
children played on the giant swing
and made dens in the trees. The team
at Wilderness Wood are always busy
creating new outdoor spaces. I loved
seeing their new Shepherd’s Hut which
has a beautiful view right across the
forest.
As a family we are trying to become
more aware of our plastic use. We
really enjoyed taking part in Zero Waste
Maman’s beach clean last month...so
this month we carried out a litter pick
on Hempstead Meadow in conjunction
with a project run by Kids Against
Plastic. We cleared over 50 pieces of
plastic waste plus other items...and best
of all...the kids thought it was fun! Good
for the environment and cheaper than
an hour at the soft play!
With the arrival of Spring we are hoping
to visit some of the local farming venues
offering families the chance to meet
their new arrivals. I’d really like to visit
Open Farm at Middle Farm in Firle
where they allow you to bottle feed
some of the lambs. We have a couple of
weekends away planned as we welcome
the warmer weather and I’m now really
looking forward to suspending more
time outdoors. It’s an exciting and
optimistic time of year...the perfect time
to start planning your next adventure!
RAILWAY SERVICES FOR UCKFIELD
The rail service from Uckfield
to Lewes was originally
withdrawn in 1969.
How do you feel about
reinstating this service?
Contact us through:
admin@uckfieldtc.gov.uk
@uckfieldtowncouncil
By Cllr. Ian Smith
Uckfield Town Council has supported Wealden District Council’s decision to protect the track
bed of this former railway route from development. This has firmly kept open the option to
reinstate the rail link.
Protecting the current service
The current Uckfield to
London service also has, in
the past, been under severe
threat of closure due to the
continued use of an outdated
infrastructure and rolling stock.
Uckfield Town Council has
played its part in protecting
the existing rail service and in
seeking improvements. The
Council helped to establish,
and participates in, the
Uckfield Railway Line Parishes
Committee which comprises
representatives from councils
along the route.
A modern fleet of diesel rolling
stock was introduced, giving a
faster and more comfortable
service. The ever-increasing
population has led to a large
growth in passenger numbers
and this will increase as
Uckfield expands. The pressure
to take a more radical approach
to the line’s future has become
impossible to resist.
Improvements for the future
The line, as it stands, needs to
be run with electric traction and
the single line sections returned
to double track to improve the
timetable performance.
Reinstatement of the route
into Lewes, along with a direct
connection into Brighton, will
bring great benefits to the
residents of Uckfield and the
surrounding area. The council
has embraced the proposal for
the Wealden Line Campaign’s
Brighton Main Line 2 (BML2)
and will continue to push for
a vibrant rail network to bring
great economic benefits to
our area and better travel
arrangements for current and
future users.
a memorial where, despite its
name, no one is buried. It was
built to remember six young
men, the crew of a Wellington
bomber who were all killed
when it crashed on the forest
on 31 July 1941. Annual
remembrance services are still
held here.
LAST MONTH IN
YOUR COUNCIL
Spring is around the corner and a
new financial year on the horizon.
As we near this financial year
end, the council has been pulling
together its annual reports for the
Annual Town meeting in April and
preparing its accounts for audit.
Members were pleased to see works
start at Hughes Way Play Area in
February. Despite the poor weather,
contractors worked hard to remove
the existing equipment and start
installation. It is hoped that the new
play area will be a great facility for
residents in the surrounding roads and
wider Church Coombe estate.
Grounds staff were asked to increase
the frequency of path cleaning at
the entrances to Holy Cross Church
to weekly. In addition, councillors
suggested the addition of a handrail
to assist visitors when accessing the
grounds of the Church.
It was also agreed to fund the addition
of the ‘Ridgewood Village’ signs to the
new town twinning signs located on
Lewes Road and Eastbourne Road.
In light of the recent changes to the
policing model, the council discussed
community safety, requesting that the
Town Clerk look into initiatives that had
been introduced elsewhere to reduce
the fear of crime and matters relating to
community safety.
The annual reports of each committee
would be published alongside the
agenda for the Annual Town Meeting in
April 2018.
WORKING TOGETHER
IN 2018
The Town Council has embarked on a number of
new initiatives and invites you as the reader to get
involved in our campaigns – Creating a Dementia
Friendly High Street, #GetactiveinUckfield and Dog
Fouling.
Your support with all of these campaigns
is encouraged and will help to improve the
community. Members have recognised that new
ways of working could undoubtedly bring change
through cooperation with others. The council
is looking forward to our new year and making
progress on the things that matter to you, as our
JUNIOR HEROES
Our stars of the future
localmatters
by Nicki Richardson
We hear lots about adults putting themselves out and doing their bit ,but there
are also lots of children who are unsung heroes, regularly putting themselves
out for friends, family and the community. Here at Uckfield Matters we want
them to have a little recognition for the things they do to go above and beyond.
Our two junior heroes for March are Freya Embden-Kane and Harry Gunn
Freya, who attends Manor Primary in
Uckfield, was born with congenital heart
disease, a condition called 'Tetralogy of
Fallots' She needed to have open heart
surgery at 7 months old at the Evelina
children's hospital in London to mend
her heart. It has been a little over 10
years since Freya was admitted to the
Evelina and she decided she would like
to raise some money for Evelina Heart
children’s organisation, ECHO for short,
the charity that has supported her
and her family from the day she was
diagnosed onwards. It is a wonderful
charity that helps so many families
with children with heart conditions. On
valentines day Freya hosted an ECHO
coffee morning and raised a fantastic
£150 which has gone to her overall
fundraising that currently stands at
£440. Well done Freya
Do you know someone who is a
Junior Hero?
Send details to hello@uckfieldmatters.
co.uk and we will pick our next hero.
A year ago Harry's cousin, Alfie, was
diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, whilst
initially a big shock Alfie has managed
to overcome this and take his condition
in his stride with the help of his friends
and family, this week Alfie got another
surprise although a nice one when
Harry presented him with an X box one.
Harry who attends Uckfield Technology
College has done jobs, saved up pocket
money and refused any contribution
by his family as he ‘wanted to do it
all himself’ Harry wanted to get the
Xbox one for Alfie so that when he is a
having a diabetic hypogeaycemia (hypo
for short) and cant go out and see his
friends he’s still able to do things with
them. Harry is very supportive of his
cousin in lots of ways, learning about
Alfie’s diabetes so that he can spot when
Alfie might be having a hypo and get
him help or be able to help him with his
medication so that Alfie can feel safe
being out without his parents. Well done
Harry!
MARCH BRINGS LOTS
OF OPPORTUNITIES
March is a busy month for the Chamber – unique ‘one-off' events, our AGM and
the introduction of our Chamber Directory as we hurtle towards Easter at the end
of the month.
FWe will sponsor and co-host an event
led by our MP, Nus Ghani, on Friday
9th March to help local businesses
understand the importance of being
‘Disability Confident' – a range of
speakers will help businesses consider
this critical aspect.
Before that, on Thursday 1st March, we
will be exhibiting at an East Sussex Expo,
which will provide a superb opportunity
to network with many local businesses,
and explain the many benefits of
Chamber membership.
The third and final event in as many
weeks at Chamber member, East Sussex
National, is our AGM on Thursday 15th
March – we will be voting in a new
President and Vice Presidents, plus one
or two new faces onto our Executive
Committee. If you are a Chamber
member and reading this before mid-
March and you haven't yet booked your
place at the AGM, what are you waiting
for?
The Exec. is the engine of the Chamber
driving improvements for Uckfield – more
than a dozen local business people, all
with busy day jobs, give a minimum
of two hours of their time monthly to
support the management decisions that
collectively help local business. We are
UCKFIELD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE UPDATE - MARCH 2018
fortunate to have such a talented group.
Allow me, through these pages, to
personally thank Bernard Smith, who
is stepping down as President and from
the Exec. after two and a half years.
Bernie has been a super leader and a
great help to me personally, during my
initial six months in the role. He is a guy
who has Uckfield at heart and should
be congratulated for all that has been
achieved during his tenure.
Looking ahead, we have booked our
member meetings at some wonderful
rural locations around Uckfield for
May and July – with warmer weather
approaching we will be visiting both
Bluebell Vineyard and Crockstead
Farm Hotel in the summer. At the May
meeting, we will also be launching
the Uckfield Business Awards 2018 –
the glitziest night of the year in TN22
country! We have been busy seeking
sponsorship of the various awards
our other great sponsors in future
We continue to see several new member
own, manage or work in an Uckfield
business that isn't a Chamber member
we'd love to hear from you. Just email or
Waste free
EASTER?
environmentmatters
By Claire Sumners
Easter is a celebration of life so
what better time to start in earnest
your zero waste journey rather
than a time for over consumption and
a lot of waste. Don’t forget REFUSE
REDUCE RECYCLE.
Creating traditions when being together
with loved ones and eating chocolate
eggs is fun for all and doesn’t need
to make extra landfill. In 2014 it was
reported that Easter consumption
created 4,500 tonnes of extra waste from
the foil and cardboard alone!
What is normally purchased at Easter
are…cards…chocolate eggs…cakes..
flowers…So here are a few of my
favourite top tips on how to have more
conscious Easter zero waste style;
Send e-cards or cards that don’t have the
plastic sleeve. Being thoughtful doesn’t
mean wasteful.
Easter - time to
start a zero-waste
family tradition?
Zero waste doesn’t mean chocolate free
just unnecessary packaging free! Eggs
are gifts but by those that are wrapped
in recyclable packaging, aluminium
foil, cardboard, DO NOT buy those with
a plastic mold around the egg. There
are companies who are trying to reduce
the waste created by their products like
Montezuma who have an eco egg with
only two parts of packaging!
Buy flowers to brighten your home or
dining table from a local florist rather
than big store, plastic wrapping for
flowers is throw away not to mention
air miles. Or buy bulbs and give them
as gifts.
Easter lunch was a firm fav in my house
hold growing up especially the simnel
cake. I still find zero waste baking hard
however the lunch part is easy to be
waste free. Shop local at a farm shop
or farmers market where you can take
your own cotton bags for shopping or
get a veg box where the produce is dirty
and doesn’t have plastic shrink sleeve
wrapped around each item.
Making memories can now take a more
unconventional twist, on the post-lunch
walk go for a litter pick! Especially if
you have children with you, getting
them to understand waste is easy as
they collect sweet wrapper after sweet
wrapper, drinks cans…all the items I
collect on a daily basis.
Enjoy!
IMPRESSIVE RUN FOR AFC UCKFIELD
After slipping into the relegation
zone towards the end of last year,
AFC Uckfield Town have enjoyed an
impressive upsurge in form in 2018.
Three successive away wins, including
an excellent 2-1 victory at Peacehaven
and Telscombe, have taken Uckfield
up to mid-table in the Southern
Combination Premier Division.
Anthony Storey's young side will now be
aiming to take advantage of a string of
home fixtures during March to provide
the platform for moving up into the top
half of the table.
In further good news from the Oaks,
By David Eggleston
RUGBY CLUB UNBEATEN RUN
CONTINUES
Uckfield rugby club's rich vein of
form continued with an excellent 17-7
victory at East Grinstead - their fifth
consecutive win - in the first match of
the second phase of the season, which
sees the top four teams from the first
phase playing each other.
Uckfield's hopes of finishing in the
top two seem likely to depend on the
outcome of home and away games
during this month against the leaders
Hellingly, with a home clash against
Burgess Hill sandwiched in between on
10th March.
UCKFIELD ANDERIDA BEGIN NEW
SEASON PREPARATIONS
With spring not too far around the
corner, it is the time of year when local
cricketers start to look forward with
greater anticipation to the coming
season. Uckfield Anderida Cricket Club
will kickstart their preparations with a
series of weekly indoor cricket games
throughout March at the Lewes Leisure
Centre, starting on Sunday 4 March
from 12.00 to 2 pm. Anyone interested
in getting involved with these sessions
should contact the club via its website,
www.uckfieldanderida.play-cricket.com.
The club will be venturing outdoors
next month with three pre-season
friendlies, all at the Victoria Pleasure
Ground, starting on Saturday 14 April.
After their promotion last year from
Division Four of the East Sussex League,
a complete re-structure of all cricket
leagues across the county means that
Uckfield Anderida find themselves in
Division 7 East of the Sussex Cricket
League for the 2018 campaign, for
which they will have a new captain
in Matt McCallum. Meanwhile, the
club's second eleven will be playing in
Division 12 East.
Aches, pains and
niggles left untreated
can lead to more
problems
Time-out
by Michelle Pearce
REST & REPAIR
Michelle Pearce talks to Abby Pulham, sports massage therapist
Whether we enjoy sport
in our spare time or
are an elite athlete, it is
essential to keep an eye
out for aches, pains and niggles which
untreated could develop into more
severe problems. And what better way
of doing this than having an expert
set of hands kneading, rolling and
stretching your weary limbs. I met up
with Uckfield-based sports massage
therapist Abby Pulham to find out more
about this kind of massage and its role
in sport.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN SPORTS MASSAGE AND
OTHER FORMS OF MASSAGE?
Sports massage is commonly used to
enhance performance, prevent injury
or to assist in the healing of an injury.
It treats deep layers of muscle and
connective tissue, using a broad range
of techniques. While other forms of
massage can be fantastic for reducing
general tension and stiffness, they
often aren't specifically targeted to treat
injuries.
WHAT MIGHT WE EXPECT FROM A
SPORTS MASSAGE TREATMENT?
Your therapist will talk to you about
your medical history, current problem,
then assess your posture and movement
to get the full picture before starting
hands-on treatment. Stretching and
manipulation, as well as more standard
massage techniques, form the body of
the procedure. Sometimes I will also
tape an injury and recommend remedial
exercises to do at home.
IS SPORTS MASSAGE JUST FOR
SPORTS PEOPLE OR CAN ANYONE
COME FOR TREATMENT?
Sports massage can be beneficial to
people from all sorts of backgrounds.
Everyday life causes lots of the
54

wellbeingmatters
problems I treat - sitting at a desk all
day, or driving long distances can be
damaging - so it's not just for sportsmen
and women.
HOW DO WE KNOW IF A NIGGLE
IS JUST A NIGGLE OR IF WE NEED
TREATMENT?
In the first instance with an injury the
PRICE rule applies - Protect, Rest, Ice,
Compress, Elevate. If your stiff neck
or limp hasn't gone in a few days, you
probably need more assistance. A good
therapist will always talk with you on
the phone and will advise if they think
you need someone different to treat you.
Don't forget that if you are in any doubt
about the seriousness of your injury,
you can call 111 for advice.
WHAT KINDS OF ACHES AND
INJURIES CAN SPORTS MASSAGE
HELP?
As well as treating a range of injuries
and enhancing performance at all
levels, Sports Massage can help with
postural and mobility issues. One of
my passions is supporting recovery
after surgery or major trauma. Getting
a person's body back to full function
rather than them just getting by is
something I feel to be very important to
quality of life.
WHAT QUALIFICATIONS SHOULD
WE EXPECT FROM A SPORTS
MASSAGE THERAPIST?
Level 4 in Sports Massage / Soft Tissue
Therapy or above, professional liability
insurance and ideally they should be a
member of a professional body such as
the Sports Massage Association. I like
to look for testimonials from previous
clients to see whether the treatment
they offer is a good match for what I
want.
WHAT'S YOUR TOP TIP FOR
PEOPLE RECOVERING FROM
INJURY?
Take it easy! When you are told to rest
for six weeks, this means six weeks! So
many people get to 5 weeks, feel better
and so start exercising again and then
are shocked when they are back to
square one with the injury.
ART AT THE HEART
Local artist Ben Wade is causing a stir in the art world.
by Tilly Christie
Uckfield's Art Trail and Bridge Arts
exhibition space encourage young
artists to showcase their work.
Uckfield artist Ben S Wade, who is due
to complete his BA(Hons) degree in Fine
Art at Northbrook College shortly, has
been recognised as an up-and-coming
talent. Ben's work was displayed at the
prestigious Jerwood Drawing Prize
Exhibition in 2017, and he hopes to
attend Wimbledon College of Art to
complete an MA in drawing.
Recent works focus on self-portraiture
and media representation and are
painstakingly detailed, with Ben
regularly working long hours.
Says Ben: "By drawing for between ten to
fifteen hours every day for the last four
years I have increased my knowledge
and improved my approach to concept,
technique and application."
Ben's first public exhibition was at
Uckfield's annual Bridge Arts Fair in
June 2016, encouraged by an encounter
with Tim Benians, its founder, at
Uckfield Framing Company.
Ben explains: "The greatest help has
been my mum, who enrolled me onto
a GNVQ course in art when I showed a
passing interest. She has helped and
encouraged me throughout. Also my
56

tutors, who inspire and challenge me,
as well as Uckfield Framing Co's Tim
Benians, who encouraged me to display
my work in public for the first time."
Tim comments: "It is always a pleasure
to see local talent grow and thrive. We
are delighted with Ben's success and
proud of our small part in helping
encourage him to develop that talent."
CROSSWORD ANSWERS
MUCKFIELD WHEELERS
Mountain biking in the Uckfield area
The "MUckfield Wheelers" are a group of friends who enjoy cycling in the local area. All
rides include some off-road sections on tracks and bridleways, so a mountain bike is
needed. The group started in April 2014 and so is approaching the end of its fourth
year. From this April we are looking to expand for the summer season, so if you would
like to join, please come along. This is not a training or race group but a social group
for all standards. Rides
are on Tuesday evenings
for relative newcomers to
mountain biking (about 10
miles), some Wednesday
mornings (about 20 miles),
Thursday evenings (about
15 miles) and some Sundays
about (30-40 miles). The
distance and pace depend
on who turns up and is
determined by the slowest
rider. There is a tea/coffee
stop on the daytime rides.
Minimum requirements are
a mountain bike, a cycle
helmet, a water bottle and
spare tube.
For evening rides you will
also need front and rear
lights with working batteries.
A sense of adventure and
a sense of fun are also
expected, but everyone who
takes part is responsible for
their safety.
READING DOG, ZACKY, VISITS NEWICK PRIMARY SCHOOL
Zacky the 'Pets as Therapy' reader dog
has been coming to visit children at
Newick CE Primary school weekly to
help improve the children’s confidence
with their reading.
Class Teacher, Emma Parsons,
said "many children can find reading
to an adult intimidating as they are
aware that any mistakes they make
will be corrected and in some cases
they struggle to then enjoy the reading
process. Reading to Zacky, removes this
worry, as Zacky cannot pass comment
and simply enjoys sitting with the
children. The children have loved
reading to him. They each spend 15
minutes happily sitting in our reading
corner, reading and perhaps enjoying a
cuddle with Zacky whilst practicing their
reading."
2530 UCKFIELD SQUADRON ATC RECEIVES NEW BANNER
2530 Uckfield Squadron received their new Squadron Banner after receiving a
donation from a local Uckfield business, Cannadines - specialising in Kitchens,
Bathrooms & Bedrooms.
The donation was made after young
Cadet Cannadine's parents joined
the Squadron Civilian Welfare
Committee and one of the items on the
Commanding Officers wish list was a
new banner for the Squadron.
The original banner carbon dates to at
least 40 years old, when the Squadron
was formed in Uckfield in the 1970's and
has seen its fair share of use over the
years, being paraded for Remembrance
Weekends, Drill & Ceremonial
Competitions, and other parades to
name but a few.
£3875 PRESENTED BY UCKFIELD LIONS TO LOCAL ORGANISATIONS
Three cheques totalling £3875 were
presented to local organisations at the
February business meeting of Uckfield
Lions Club on 14 February by Lions
President Keith Mates . This was made
possible by the fantastic support from
the wonderful people of Uckfield who
once again supported the Lions Santa
Sleigh & Christmas raffle. With everyone's
generosity, Uckfield Lions Santa Sleigh raised over £4600 for local charities& good
causes. In addition, Waitrose Uckfield sponsored Uckfield Lions Christmas raffle.
The Lion's chosen charity this year was the Rockinghorse Charity and a cheque for
£2575 was presented to Ryan Heal from the Rockinghorse Charity. A presentation
showing their work in the Special Baby Unit and explaining how the money from
Uckfield Lions would be used was given.
Help with collecting money on the Santa Sleigh outings in December was given by
Uckfield ATC and Uckfield Leos Club. In recognition of this, a cheque for £700 was
presented to Commanding Officer, Warrant Officer Ashley Catt from the Uckfield
ATC and another for £600 was presented to Kaelin Brand from the Uckfield Leos.
36 ORGANISATIONS BENEFIT FROM UCKFIELD CARNIVAL COLLECTION
On Saturday 17 February around 100
people representing 36 local groups and
organisations gathered at the Belmont
Centre in Uckfield for the annual
Uckfield Bonfire & Carnival Society
Presentation Evening.
This year £3900 was shared between the
organisations from monies collected
during the Uckfield Carnival in
September last year. The organisations
all gave thanks to the Society for the
support and outlined an impressive
number of projects that the money
would go to support in addition to
helping with the ever increasing
running costs for many of the
organisations.
Society Chair, Jackie Love, said “The
generosity of the people of Uckfield
during the Carnival makes it possible
for the Society to support these valuable
organisations. We have to say a huge
thank you to everyone who supports
our work and also thank all of the
organisations for the work they do
across Uckfield and the surrounding
areas.”
