Preparing to Die 

Two years before his death, Mike Hanzas, who lived alone, began preparations 

for his demise. He bought a cemetery lot. Weekly, he visited 

the site where his mortal remains would be interred. He planted grass 

there and mowed it regularly. On Memorial Day, he placed flowers on 

the grave site. He said, “I want to see flowers there now. I won’t be 

able to see them when I’m gone!” A while later Mike went into a funeral 

home. “I want to buy the casket which will be my new home,” he said. 

One day Mike invited a nephew and the rest of his family to come to see 

him. After a hearty meal, Mike began to dispense personal things. 

Then he handed his nephew his will. As he did this, he dropped dead 

of heart failure! So far as we know, Mike had made every provision 

for his body but none for his soul! What provisions have you made 

for your soul? 

Death is a fact of life. The Bible asks, “What man is he that liveth, and 

shall not see death?” (Psalm 89:48) “For the living know that they shall 

die...” (Ecclesiastes 9:5). Mike was prepared to die as far as this life 

goes, but was he prepared for what was to follow? The Bible says, 

“...it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment” 

(Hebrews 9:27). “For God shall bring every work into judgment, with 

every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil” (Ecclesiastes 

12:14). “So then every one of us shall give account of himself to 

God” (Romans 14:12). 

A person is not prepared for the judgment until he has repented of 

his sins and accepted Jesus Christ as His Savior. The Bible says, “If 

we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to 

cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (I John 1:9). Have you done that?

Do you love your kitchen, but hate the clutter? Your kitchen is the ‘hub’ of your home. Try these 4 easy, 

stress-free tips to get rid of clutter, improve organization and maximize your storage. 

Clear your counter tops 

Keeping too many things on your counter tops equals a lot of kitchen clutter. Anything you do not use on a daily 

basis should be kept in cabinets and drawers, out of sight. Make it a daily habit to clear and clean counter tops 

at least once a day. 

Check your appliances 

Keeping with ‘Clear your counter tops’ check the appliances kept on your counters. When did you last use your fancy food processor, mixer, juicer, cappuccino 

maker? These appliances take up a lot of counter top space, and gather dust and dirt. If you haven’t used an appliance in 6 months, find it a new home (pantry, 

basement). If you use it several times a year, try to find a space to store it (kitchen cabinet, pantry). 

Clean and organize under your kitchen sink 

When tackling the cabinet under your sink, I advise taking everything out! Clean it well and add an under the sink mat to protect the floor. Add a plastic shelving 

unit to help take advantage of the height under your sink. Add hooks to hold cleaning brushes and rubber gloves, and a Lazy Susan to keep dish detergent and 

cleaners. This will help keep all your cleaning necessities at easy access. 

And then there’s the frig… 

Most of us have an over-crowded and cluttered refrigerator. The frig is one of the hardest working appliances in your home! You should try to declutter and clean 

your refrigerator once a month. Start shelf-by-shelf, taking everything out, and wiping-down all inside surfaces. Before putting items back, check expiration dates, 

make sure all containers are sealed properly, wipe off rims of jar, salad dressing bottles, etc. Toss anything spoiled and past its prime.
