Gundremmingen B

Operating sequence in 2017

Electrical output in %

January February March April May June July August September October November December

In the review year 2017, unit B of the Gundremmingen nuclear power

plant was operated at full load without any major restrictions except

for a 23-day outage for refuelling. A gross total of 9,689,710 MWh

of electricity was produced. On order of the grid operator grid

supporting services were often provided, especially in the months of

June and September.

From 16 November 2016 to 3 February 2017 unit B was in

stretch-out operation. In spring, during the refuelling outage a total

of 80 fuel elements were unloaded and replaced with 72 fresh and 8

(all of them MOX) partially spent fuel elements. During the refuelling

outage all safety-related relevant workings were monitored by the

100 relevant nuclear controlling authority, the Bavarian State Ministry of

the Environment and Consumer Protection (StMUV), and consulted

authorized 80 experts. The inspection of the technical systems with

regard to safety and reliability confirmed the excellent condition of

the 60 plant. From 3 August 2017, unit B was in stretch-out operation

because of its permanent shutdown.

40 On 31 December 2017, unit B was permanently shut down due to

the revision of the German Atomic Energy Act in 2011. Since the

beginning of commercial operation in 1984, unit B produced, with a

time availability of up to 90 %, a gross total of up to 330,000,000 MWh

of electricity.

Planned shutdowns

3 to 26 February: 32 nd refuelling outage.

• The Positionierung:

following major activities were carried out:

• Refuelling and inspection of fuel elements.

Bezug, links, unten

• Extensive non-destructive tests.

• Repair measures on tubes and valves.

• Repair VGB: measures HKS6K on service 30 % water system because of wall thickness

variations through pitting.

• 31 December: Permanent shutdown.

Unplanned shutdowns and reactor/turbine trip

27 February: Manual scram due to safety valve staying in open

position during a period test, subsequently exchange of one of his

pilot valves.

19 May: Turbine trip caused by electronic fault in unit protection.

Power reductions above 10 % and longer than for 24 h

1 January to 3 February: Stretch-out operation.

9 March to 11 March: Removing of leakages.

3 August to 31 December: Stretch-out operation.

National Peer Review

From 16 to 17 October VGB PowerTech carried out a National Peer

Review with the topic of hazard analyses at Gundremmingen nuclear

power plant.

WANO Review/Technical Support Mission

From 23 to 27 January the World Association of Nuclear Operators

(WANO) carried out a Follow-Up of Peer Review 2013, and from

26 to 29 September 2017 a Pre-Visit in preparing for the Peer Review

2018 at Gundremmingen nuclear power plant.

Waste management status

At the end of 2017, the local interim storage facility accommodated

55 loaded CASTOR © casks with each 52 spent fuel elements out of

units B and C.

General points

On July 12, a recertification audit according to OHRIS was

successfully carried out. A first combined monitoring audit of

environmental management system (DIN EN ISO 14001) and energy

management system (DIN EN ISO 50001) was successfully carried

out from 23 to 24 October 2017.

Twinning Program

From 20 to 27 August 2017: Visit to the Russian Novovoronezh

partner plant. Thereby five colleagues from management systems,

piping and fitting engineering, apparatus engineering and reactor

engineering discussed about safety systems, certification of management

systems, facility decommissioning, water treatment, fire

protection concept and CASTOR © loading.
