Editor’s Letter
If you are fortunate to call New York City your home, then you know us NY’er’s can handle just about anything.
However, even we started to feel dizzy when Spring didn’t exactly feel like Spring when it officially began on March
20th. After speaking to another Editor in Chief last week about how an issue will expose what we currently are
feeling, I realized that when curating this latest Issue 4 of Breed Magazine, I was attracted to stories that still had a
feeling of chill and transition. We were dealing with snowstorms way past Spring’s official first day, snow covering
our routes to work, donning our puffer coats when we truly wanted to shed them for lighter clothes. This issue
definitely has one foot still in the dark, short days of winter while fervently pushing forward towards Spring.
I am thrilled to feature some unique stories with transgender models, work from many Breed members but more
importantly, incredible work from international emerging photographers like Daria Belikova and Billy Tziatas, who’s
random submissions made us stop what we were doing and take a closer look!
Chanel is featured throughout an entire editorial shot by Ron Beaver which was so refreshing to see the mix of
vintage with the latest pieces. Anthony Grassetti’s editorial featuring a dear friend of mine, transgender model
Manzin, was heartwarming to receive during winters last lingering grasp on us at the magazine.
There are so many stories that to me, read transition. We are still transitioning to Spring and I think, if this issue says
anything, it is about that: transition. Transition to understand and salute women, to our changing culture, to our
strength to stand up and stand for what is right. We don’t just want to be seen. We want to be heard!
It’s been a joy to put this issue together. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
Dre Davis is an American Actress and Model, born and raised in Connecticut! She quickly caught the publics eye when
she made her appearance as a model in Project Runway Season 8! Soon after she joined the cast of the hit series Pretty
Little LIars Season 6 in her recurring role as Sara Harvey! She’s got exciting things on the horizon for this year and legend
photographer Victor Cesar Bota sat down with Dre to get a bullet point, straigt to the heart, insight on Who is Dre and
Where to find her!
Dress VIVETTA

Suit REDEMPTION

What drives and inspires Dre Davis? I grew up as an artist so there’s always been a constant need to create. I guess, I’m
inspired by people needing to speak their truth to the point that they relentlessly find a portal to do so.
How was it to grow in Cornwall, CT? Beautiful and slow. I prefer cities and movement.
How did you did got involved in Project Runway? Would you recommend it to any model trying to became an actress? I got the
casting from my modeling agency, lied about my height, as we do, and almost immediately got the job. It does not
behoove an actress to model first, in my opinion, unless to suppress the financial pressure in building a career.
How was the transition from model to actress? Any pieces of advice? As soon as I sat in an acting class, I immediately
switched focus to studying theatre. I’d still model but I do recall Wilhelmina pulling me aside because there was
an obvious shift in attention. But, I was learning so much and growth is addictive. My initial advice is just to
study.
We learned that you also write. What’s your favorite author and favorite book? I don’t have one particular favorite but I love
Joan Didion, Lydia Millet, Jack Kerouac, Charles Bukowski. For books, Lolitaalways sneaks into my mind when
asked this question, and Katherine Dunn’s Geek is so so good.
What are your novels about? I don’t know that I can actually reveal that before they’re published but they’re dark,
funny and wildly inappropriate for the average human.
What did you study at Parsons School of Design? Life drawing, painting, sculpture, graphic design, art history, fashion
design. They make you do it all.
Guilty pleasure? Dark chocolate, which is not so bad for you, unless you get carried away.
Favorite food / drink? I love salmon and red wine for the polyphenols, baby.
Eternal crush? Chelsea Handler
Treasured possession? My computer because it holds all my writing.
Perfect date? I love going out to dinner and, considering I’m pretty socially unmotivated, that would do it.
Favorite film? City of God
Coffee or tea? Coffee and THEN tea.
Are you an Uptown or Downtown girl? Downtown. Though, I can be boujie and hang with uptown. Just not midtown,
no no.
Beatles or Stones? Stones
Rock or Rap? Jazz? Rock
New York or Los Angeles? New York is more my speed but I appreciate Los Angeles and foresee this as my home.
East or West Village? East
Tragedy or comedy? Black comedy
If you played in a band, which one it would be? When I was young I made up a band called, The Bleeding Vaginas. I’m assuming
I had just hit puberty? So, that. As for a real band, Nirvana or Peaches.
Boxing on the piers! Who are you trying knock out on the waterfront? No one, just trying to get focused and better.
If you had to choose one person that hasn’t met yet to spend eternity on a deserted island who would that be? I find this question
very scary, as I have a lot to do before getting deserted, so pass.
What happened behind the scenes on “Pretty Little Liars” set, that every time it happened, you said to yourself, “here we go again”?
When we ran out of cold brew on night shoots there were some real problems.
Who are the actors and actress would like work with in the future? Helena Bonham Carter, Cate Blanchett, Viola Davis, Lilly
Raabe, and you can’t even begin to imagine how much I love Jessica Lange.
What can you tell us about “Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea”? It’s full of strong, sassy women, as everything
should be. Also, I have a fun accent in it.
Is your sister a model or actress also? No, my sisters have normal jobs and babies and spouses and schedules that don’t
change every week.
If you had to watch one movie every day for the rest of your life, which one would it be? A movie that hypnotizes me so I forget
I’m watching the same damn movie every day.
If you had all the money and everything else you ever needed, what would you do for yourself when you are alone omg the daily
basis? I’d get loads of massages, personal training sessions, meditation classes, accent training lessons, and continue
to act and write as much as I can. I’m very much into self improvement and also massages :)
Tells us something no one knows about Dre? What’s a new secret about her, she’s are ready to let it out? I talk to myself.
But, who doesn’t?!?!
Dre and 2018, what should we be looking for? Hopefully, a very focused individual.
Any new projects? Yep, stay tuned! ;))))

THE MAKEUP ARTIST INDUSTRY PAGES
T
he Numbers Game:
by RACHEL TOLEDO
In this new age of “Influencer “ marketing, it is important when it comes to booking a creative team to not judge them by their “numbers”. There’s been
a big movement of hiring hair and makeup artists for a job based on the number of followers they have. Some are authentic and in no way is this article
meant to take away their shine BUT do not discredit the incredibly important number of years of experience or the number of clients they have worked
with in favor of someone who may get you exposure from posting about your shoot. Many clients have consulted with me over the fact that they hired a
high -ranking numbered makeup artist, for example, but they couldn’t understand the brief. And just because they do amazing makeup on themselves does
not mean they know how to work with various face shapes, skin tone or understand timing and set work. DO YOUR HOMEWORK! Take a minute to have a
meeting before a shoot. Get to know the people you are collaborating with not just how they appear on your screen. Also, many working artists and creatives
are just too busy working on the shoot to actually spend the time to document it all on social media. As a rule of thumb, when I am consulting photographers
and producers who are planning a shoot, I suggest finding someone who has a personality that clicks, someone who’s professional and is a terrific
listener. Creativity and skill is obviously important, but finding your team that’s the right fit for you should take precedence over the number of “likes” they
have on their social media.
Looking for some GENUINE artists out there to follow? Here’s a list of some of my favorite creative industry folks who are out there killing it! Their follower
numbers go up and down but do have a look at their talent, not their numbers!
