Editor's message

Dear Neighbours,

Ah! The glorious days of end of spring when,

instead of sitting in my study in front of a

computer while it’s cold and rainy outside… I sit

in my study in front of a computer while it’s bright and

sunny outside.

If you feel more energetic than I do, there are plenty

of opportunities to keep you entertained this time of

year in our area.

Muddy Mayhem is back and what’s even better, you

have the whole summer to prepare: it will happen on

7th October. As you might know, it’s a Family Charity

Obstacle Fun Run, so you can choose to walk, run,

marshal, spectate or sponsor, and in the process help

local charities.

Ladygrove Park Primary School invite you to their

SummerFete. Great fun for all the family on 16th June.

Girlguiding Ridgeway are profiled on page 10. Have a

read if you are looking for great activities for your

daughter.

Our 10th birthday celebrations continue. 10 years of

serving the community, promoting local business &

organisations. See their entries inside and do not forget

to use the index on page 30 to locate them in the

magazine.

Resident experts Shaw Gibbs continue the series on

personal, sole trader and partnership business advice.

On this issue: business expenses.

More inside as usual including our garden feature,

crossword, mindbenders, Didcot Film Club, ’Shut up

and Write!’, Didcot Concert Orchestra and

more...including of course our local businesses. On

their behalf, let me extend a big thank you for

continuing to use and support them. When you do so,

don't forget to tell them that you found them in The

Didcot Directory.

See page 4 for the copy

deadlines.

Girlguiding

Ridgeway Division

Girlguiding Ridgeway division has over 40 units

meeting in Chilton, Harwell, Upton and East

Hagbourne, across Didcot, Long Wittenham,

Cholsey, Brightwell and Wallingford. Together

they offer over 600 girls and young women the

chance to learn skills, grow in confidence, make

lifelong friendships, help their communities and

have lots of fun.

Units generally meet weekly during term time with

other trips and sleepovers at weekends, each

group makes their own decisions about activities

they enjoy. Rainbows are aged 5-7 and learn by

doing – they get their hands dirty, do sports, arts

and crafts and play games. Through taking part in

a range of different activities with girls their own

age, Rainbows develop self-confidence and make

lots of new friends.

At age 7 girls can join

Brownies. Girls in

B r o w n i e s h a v e

i n c r e d i b l e

experiences together,

make brilliant friends

a n d d i s c o v e r t h e

world around them.

Every time they meet

u p , g r o u p s o f

Brownies learn new

skills and take on

challenges as they work out what they want to be

and do in the future.

By the time girls are 10 most are ready to move

on to Guides. In Guides you'll get out there and do

something really different. You'll create your own

campaigns, learn and share new skills and fly

down the occasional zip wire. You'll explore new

places - Guides go on camps, holidays and trips,

enjoy exciting events like the star-studded concert

the BIG GIG and the music festival, Wellies and

Wristbands.

The Senior Section is for all young women aged

14 to 25. Travel the world, learn to lead, raise your

voice and build an incredible CV. Whatever you

want to do, The Senior Section offers a range of

unique opportunities.

Ridgeway Division

With a programme

designed around your personal development, The

Senior Section is all about gaining valuable,

transferable skills and standing up for what you

believe in.

In the past few years Girlguiding Ridgeway local

units have been on many adventures outside of

the meeting place, from local sleepovers and

daytrips to bigger, longer holidays. The girls have

attended a special Brownie festival and slept in a

Big Top, stayed at Butlins with 1000s of other

Brownies, attended the BIG GIG and travelled to

London, they’ve even had sleepovers in museums.

Girls have visited care homes, raised money for

local and national charities and learnt how to feel

good about themselves while helping others. 5 of

the older Guides and Senior Section members

have been selected to join international trips this

Summer, travelling to either Austria or India as part

of a larger team from across the region.

From 26th May -10th June you might notice trains

decorated by each unit in shops and businesses

around Didcot and Wallingford. Leaflets with clues

to all the hiding places are just £1 each for the 2

trails, one in Didcot and one in Wallingford. Can

you find them all?

You can see Gilrguiding Ridgeway on

Saturday 26th May. They will be at both

Didcot and Wallingford Market Places, selling

leaflets for their fundraising Train Trails. Or

visit www.girlguiding.org.uk to find out more

about joining them.

Association of Independent

Magazine Publishers

The South Oxfordshire Business Network (SOBN) has been established to provide a peer

to peer group networking opportunity for businesses based in and around South

Oxfordshire.

The concept of the network is that people buy from people. The events of the network

encourage collaboration and relationship building.

Our aim is to help established businesses build long-term profitable relationships and

strategic alliances with each other.

The majority of events are held in or near Didcot, a unique location for networking. Some

events are held across South Oxfordshire. The main events contain a social element and

are based around building relationships in a relaxed environment.

If you own or work in a business in or near South Oxfordshire, why not come and check

what SOBN can do for you?
