It’s a difficult issue, and as Leeston Community Committee chairman Lloyd Clausen pointed out, where will the line be drawn? If Selwyn ratepayers are to contribute to this, what about other projects going on in Christchurch which Selwyn residents will use? Mayor Sam Broughton says more clarification is needed before consultation takes place – it will be interesting to see what other Selwyn ratepayers think of the idea. As you’ll read on page 3, some Lincoln residents aren’t keen on another bottle store in the area. An application has been submitted by Balhae Ltd for an off-licence bottle store known as Lincoln Liquor Centre, on Eastfield Drive. Lincoln resident Tania Roxborogh said the proposed bottle store would have a negative effect on the community. “I’m not anti people drinking alcohol at all . . . we don’t need another bottle store,” she said. Mrs Roxborogh says her two concerns are the health of the community and the impact of more litter. Balhae Ltd could not be reached for comment. Submissions on the proposed liquor store close on Monday. It’s not the first time residents have objected to plans for more bottle stores in the area. In October, Dipin Kalra withdrew his application to operate the Lincoln Bottle Store he wanted to site in Gerald St following 100 objections. In January the district council granted SJTP Ltd a licence for the Liquorland store in Vernon Drive after objectors failed to turn up to a hearing. Local News Now In Brief Fire rages, homes at risk DOYLESTON CRASH A 44-year-old woman has died in Christchurch Hospital following a two-vehicle crash near Doyleston on Saturday. Emergency services were called to the crash at the intersection of Volckman and Drain Rds at 9.44am. The driver of the other vehicle involved was hospitalised. The serious crash unit is investigating. Southbridge volunteer fire brigade chief fire officer Donald McMillan said the crash was “horrific”, with one vehicle in the creek, while another was on the road. LTP CONSULTATION CLOSED Consultation has now closed on the district council’s Long-Term Plan 2018-2028. More than 400 submissions were received on key projects it is planning over the next 10 years. Public hearings of submissions on the plan will be held on May 23-24, and the district council will hold its deliberations on May 30-31. BUGMAN NZ CITIZEN Ruud Kleinpaste, the wellknown Bugman, has finally become a New Zealand citizen. Dr Kleinpaste, 65, was granted citizenship by after having lived in New Zealand for 40 years. He was presented with citizenship at a ceremony officiated by Mayor Lianne Dalziel last week.
