July 7, 2017
Dear Friends of the Trey Whitfield Foundation,
A warm welcome to you all, as we join together once again for the 25th TWF Annual Awards Reception
Calvert -- have been generous in their support and we are truly thankful to them all.
Tonight, another group of young honorees are presented to you. What they have achieved in a few
short years are indicative of what is yet to come from each of them. Our hope is that our cadre of adult
About Trey Whitfield
Trey Whitfield was born and raised in Brooklyn, New
York. He was a recipient of a full scholarship to
Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire
in 1986. At Brewster he was very active in the
theatre and was a member of the baseball and
basketball teams. In his junior year at Brewster, Trey
led his basketball team to the New England State
Championship.
Trey was a 6’8” 240 pound power forward and was
rated one of the top players in the country. He was
highly recruited by schools such as Pepperdine,
Boston College, University of Massachusetts,
University of Richmond and Purdue. He finally
chose the University of Richmond because of its
strong academic philosophy, solid coaching and
the encouragement of one of its distinguished
alumni, Johnny Newman.
Trey spent many hours giving back to his community.
He always considered himself fortunate so he
encouraged youngsters to take advantage of any
opportunity to further their education. He worked
in summer camps counseling young boys and girls.
He also played in Summer Leagues in the New York
area and participated in the Metro Basketball Camp in Pennsylvania each summer.
A boating accident, just a few days prior to graduation, took his young life. However, family, hundreds of dear
friends, fans and classmates still embrace him in memory because of his total commitment to scholarship, friendship
and competition.
Many of Trey’s colleagues continue their quest for higher education as a salute to him. Trey touched many lives
in his short 18 years and he still lives in the hearts of the many adults and youngsters who knew and loved him.
In his memory, the Trey Whitfield Foundation will pursue his dream that everyone regardless of ethnic background
gets a fair chance at being educated. That every child will have a helping hand and every youngster will get
support from someone who cares.
Trey, your dream continues...
Academic Honorees
Age: 18
Sulema Claudia DePeyster
School: University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT
I was born in June and when I came out, my mother said I grabbed the
paper from the operating room table, ripped it and held on to it all the way
to the sink, where the doctor rinsed me off. The doctor said she had never
seen anything like that. I guess that was my first sign of determination.
Early in my life I was exposed to diversity. I attended elementary school in
Chinatown in Manhattan, and was the only African-American student in
my class. I learned a lot about Asian culture and food and to this day, I
have a strong appreciation for other cultures. My best friends in high school
are from the Dominican Republic. I have learned about their culture and
enjoy eating their food. My favorite music is KPop, a South Korean music
genre. I love music and singing, I write songs and create music beats. I
am self-taught on the piano and guitar, and I learn popular songs playing
them by ear. I tried out for “The Voice” and “Showtime at the Apollo.” I am
not afraid and determined to pursue my dreams.
As a student, I am disciplined. I do my assignments ahead of time and
always finish my homework in advance. I take pride in my work . . .
Age: 13
Linda Derry
School: Cambria School of Excellence
In these few years of my youth, I have learned to be very generous person.
I try to be a model citizen by assisting and giving my time to good causes
such as coat and toy drives, saving the environment and helping people
in my community. Although, I am not the top student in my class and
do not get straight A’s, I have my strengths and weaknesses. I know that
as long as I attempt to do my best, I should be able to accomplish my
goals. At my young age, as a recipient of the Trey Whitfield Foundation
scholarship, I believe it is never too early to begin saving for my education.
I truly appreciate this opportunity.
I believe my most meaningful accomplishments have been the desire
to help in environmentalism and education. I enjoy taking care of our
Earth and I want the future generations to have a healthy environment.
Obtaining a higher education is important so that you can learn many
things. At several points of my life, I wanted to be an OB-GYN, a teacher
and TV Show Host. Now, I want to pursue a career in film and photography
education But regardless of what I want to do when Iím older, I know I
need an education to help me reach my goals . . .
Age: 21
African Grant
School: Westminster College, New Wilmington, PA
With a major in accounting, there has always been a fire inside of me for
working with numbers. Growing up in Warren, Ohio, I attended a private
catholic school where I had plans to be an engineer. But it took a turn in
my junior year that then began my journey to fulfill my hopes and dreams
in accounting. That life changing decision was a result of two years of
stressful - not because of school, basketball, track or even my peers. It
is because of my student loans. Ever since I could remember my parents
always warned about debt and the bible scriptures that warn against it.
My name is African Grant Jr. and this is a little piece of my story.
When I was born, I suffered from a life-threatening disease called
Hirschsprungs (people who have this lack the nerve cells in all or part of
the intestines) which almost killed me with three emergency surgeries. They
had to remove my entire large intestine at 6 months old. I should not be
alive today but was blessed with life that I feel should be used to help
others because I was helped so graciously myself by so many- this is our
true purpose in life; to help one another . . .
Age: 18
Somali Jamilah Adwoa Green
School: Simmons College, Boston, MA
I was born in NYC at Beth Israel Medical Center. For seven days, I had
no name. My mother was committed to not saying my name until my
naming ceremony, which took place the following week at sunrise. My
middle names mean “beautiful” in Arabic, and “born on Monday” in Twi,
a language of Ghana.
I identify with what the Trey Whitfield Foundation stands for, in that everyone
should have equal access to the opportunities that will bring them success
in life. I was able to find academic success by being a scholar through
A Better Chance, a program that helps talented, minority students from
underserved communities apply to independent schools. I am grateful that
I had the privilege to be a boarding student at Dublin School. Living in New
Hampshire has allowed me to observe many of the cultural differences
that shape me and my fellow students and examine how they fuel the
political discussions we hear today . . .
Age: 18
Guy Liskey, Jr.
School: Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA
I am very excited to be able to better my education by attending a fouryear
University this fall. I know that not everyone has the same opportunity,
and I am grateful for this. The Arts are very challenging, especially as a
field of work. Acting roles are always spontaneous, and it is important to
take risks. The scholarship from the Trey Whitfield Foundation will aid me
in the process of making my dreams come to a reality. As much as I love
acting and performing, I know the challenges that face me ahead, and I
am eager and excited to learn to perfect my art.
Throughout my life, I’ve admired many stars on Broadway, and “The Silver
Screen”. I like to learn of their life stories and how they got to where they
are. However, one thing that never made me envious of these hardworking
actors was their fame. The art of performing has always been my goal,
never the fame or publicity. While in college, I also plan on minoring in
Spanish with hopes to travel to Spain to study, and learn about the
culture . . .
Age: 20
Lauren Lopes
School: University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT
I intend to motivate young people the way I have been motivated to
pursue my dreams and overcome challenges my whole life. While I myself
have been blessed with good health and fortune these past 20 years, I
have also seen first-hand how some are far from fortunate. Whether I was
building a house for an underprivileged man in Appalachia or taking on
the role of a character overcoming great hardship, I paid great attention
to how important and fulfilling it is to empathize with those in need.
Additionally, I have always made it a point to include and work to
understand all people regardless of color, background, affiliation or
opinion. It is important for me not only to not discriminate, but also to find
and celebrate the good in everyone I encounter. Like this foundation, I
plan to inspire people to do the same. I plan to follow my dreams without
forgetting to appreciate those who help me get to where I want to be and
to continue to give back to my community and beyond.
Once I graduate UConn, my long-term goals include pursuing my dream
of becoming an actress by auditioning in New York City while juggling
nighttime graduate school courses or an internship. I have big dreams . . .
I always wanted to be the best for my mother and father, so I made it my
duty to keep good grades, and to support them. Studying and keeping
my intellect to a high level led got me to my first-choice college that I
worked so hard for all 4 years of my high school. College has given me
the adult mentality to create my own destiny, work toward my business
persona, and use new skills to help obtain a good job. I am a business
major just like my mother and father who have a business in real estate.
I hope to work with them soon to bring up their franchise. It means a lot
to me and to everyone I love to stay focused, stay away from negativity
to maintain positivity so that I can repay all those who ever cared about
me.
There is still so much to learn through higher education about business
aspects, so that I can ensure success in my career. Every day, I motivate
myself to read more books and listen to business podcasts to stay informed
to make it in the world. It is tough out there and if one does not understand
how to take on obstacles and to solve problems it will be hard for anyone
to make it out . . .
Age: 18
School: The College of New Jersey, Ewing Township, NJ
From my parents, ever since I was little I was aware of what happened to
Trey. One of my parents on-going beliefs is that ìswimming is a life skillî and
that is largely because of what happened to Trey and the impact it had
on them. So, in a strange full circle, my swimming journey is largely due to
Trey as my parents got me in the pool at a very young age.
I am a prime example of someone who has found that swimming
competitively through club/varsity sports and its hectic schedules have
helped me in school with my grades, focus, determination, leadership skills
and time management. Rather than focus on that, it is my character, my
relationships and how I develop, foster and nurture the people around me
that has shaped me. Over the years, I always treat others with kindness
based on my childhood experiences. It became my mission to be optimistic
and to help people feel better about themselves so that they never felt as
alone as I once did. My day has always felt complete when I have helped
someone improve their mood, feel good about themselves and possibly
change their overall mindset for the better . . .
To me, the Trey Whitfield Foundation is about overcoming challenges and
adversity in pursuit of an education, a trait which I have shown several
times throughout my academic and school sports career. Notable is
senior year of high school during track and field, when I had knee pain
and weakness to the extent that after just two or three triple jumps during
meets my knee would simply collapse during my jump. Presented with this
physical challenge, since then, I have resolved to work on strengthening
not just the muscles in my legs but the rest of my body to take the impact
of my events.
This past year of college track, I have beaten my old personal records for
both long jump and triple jump by a full two feet, without incident, and
I’ve even run the 100m, 200m, and 400m races. This issue is one of several
things I have overcome while also doing my best to be a good student. I
felt I achieved academic success in high school when I finished in the top
quarter of my class, and in college, so far, all my grades hve been A’s and
B’s of which I am also proud of. At Roger Williams University, I am part of
the Spanish Club and Campus Entertainment Network, . . .
My academic struggles, my work ethic, and my motivation my strongest
attributes. During all my school years, I was one of the most troublesome
students. I didnít listen to anyone, not even my own mother, but she always
showed me love no matter what people told her about me. My mother
never gave up on me even though she could not spend enough time with
me or help with my homework, since she was working hard to make a living.
She encouraged me to do better in school so that I could have a brighter
future. She even went as far as to change my educational environment
by getting me into a school that changed my whole attitude towards
learning. Towards the end of high school, I realized that to become a
better student, I had to focus on making goals and achieving them, which
would make my mom proud.
When I got accepted into Vaughn College, I did not want to burden my
mother with any financial obligations. Thus, I sought out several job options
that would enable me to work while attending school. The opportunity
to become an Uber driver solved my dilemma because the hours were
flexible. I also work at the gym at my college, . . .
From a very young age, I have always been told that I am an old soul. I
think this is because one, I genuinely like people and can connect and
communicate with anyone I meet from a little baby to an elderly person.
And, two, I always had and continue to have sincere empathy and
sympathy towards people regardless of whether I know them or not. I have
letters from my teachers and awards I have been honored with all the
way back to Kindergarten that revolve around citizenship; compassion,
support, teamwork and kindness. I feel these qualities have helped shape
my behaviors, desire to be on a team, be a leader, and help people,
animals and the natural environment.
This school year, I met a student who quickly become my good friend. His
name is Foster and he suffers from severe Autism. I have quickly become
Fosterís best friend and he has become one of mine. I feel we have learned
a lot from each other. But, for me, I really like being around Foster and
being his friend. He doesnít ever scare or offend me in any way. If anything,
I have learned to calm, help and support him in ways that sometimes his
On November 18th, 1998 at 5:30 a.m. I was born to Denise Blanco. Due
to my mother’s ill health, I was placed in foster care and given to Mary
Beamon, a very trusted family friend. I had lived with her until I was three
years old. Sadly, she battled diabetes for years and passed. The Wilkins
family next door, whom I was very close with, took me in and at 6 years old,
they officially adopted me. I believe that being accepted into the family
was destiny.
My adoptive mother’s side of the family was into the arts. My grandfather is
a pianist and a musical director for shows on Broadway. My grandmother is
an actress and vocalist. My biological grandfather played the harp in the
Symphony Orchestra while my grandmother was a Radio City Rockette.
What’s perfect about the situation is that my grandma, the actress, gave
me acting lessons while my grandpa gave me piano lessons. It’s ironic
to me that I received my natural abilities from my biological family but I
honed and crafted my skills with my adoptive family. I guess that’s how
destiny works. Thereís already a plan mapped out for all of us and we must
work hard to get there . . .
Rushia Brown
Rushia Brown, a native of Charleston, SC is a retired female professional
basketball player. Brown is a pioneer of the WNBA and a founding
member of the Cleveland Rockers. She played 6 years in Cleveland
and 1 year with the Charlotte Sting. Rushia also enjoyed a stellar 10
year career in Europe, where she played 2 yrs in Spain, 2 yrs in France,
4 years in Italy, 1 year in Korea and 1 year in Greece. Her experience
as a professional athlete left Brown with multiple international titles, an
Eastern Conference Championship, the ability to speak Spanish, Italian
and French; in addition to her native tongue, English. With a history
of international exposure and winning, Brown developed a sense of
perspective that would propel her into a world of entrepreneurship and service. Since retiring, Rushia has
found several means of fulfilling her need to make a difference in the community and the world.
Rushia has started several businesses but her heart’s work called her to commit her life to the empowerment
of women and girls through sport. In 2006, Brown participated in a celebrity basketball game in Houston, TX
alongside various other WNBA pioneers and learned that one woman that had been a 2-time WNBA ALL-
STAR, was now homeless. Her spirit was uneasy and she knew something needed to be put into place to assist
the women with moving beyond the game. Rushia then became the Founder and President of the Women’s
Professional Basketball Alumnae (WPBA), the only organization structured to assist women that have played
professionally in the WNBA, ABL and/or in Europe as they transition into mainstream society. The WPBA is
committed to providing its membership with support and resources for:
• Career Transition
• Higher Education
• Psychological/Spiritual Well-Being and
• Philanthropic Engagement
The WPBA is a sisterhood; a team willing to assist its members in their journey to attain excellence in their next
career. (www.wpbalum.com)
Having started a few businesses, Rushia understood the pitfalls that could await an eager entrepreneur with
vision, passion but lacking in know how. She was excited to assist her brother, Artist and Entrepreneur, OKEEBA
JUBALO and business partner Johnny Clarkson, Fitness Specialist and Entrepreneur, with the vision to provide
an educational platform for people of color that have entrepreneurial aspirations. Young Black Entrepreneur,
the Magazine was formed and is approaching its one year anniversary in October. YBE tells the stories of
those that have done it well, through the struggles, and also gives insight as to how to effectively attain
funding in mainstream America. YBE is a celebration of the creativity and ingenuity we possess as a people
and gives a forum for us to perpetuate knowledge and growth. (www.noblesol.net)
Having seen the sacrifices of her family to allow her the opportunity to pursue her professional career as a
basketball player, Rushia has always wanted to support her mother with her passion for food and cooking.
In 2011, the Brown family started Hearts & Hands Catering (HNH) as a tribute to Fine Southern Cuisine. In
addition to catering events such as weddings, parties, corporate banquets, etc, with healthy soul food, HNH
has made its mark as a prominent provider of school lunches in the Metro Atlanta area. It is the mission of HNH
to implement the standards and USDA guidelines unveiled by First Lady Michelle Obama and Agriculture
Secretary Tom Vilsack. At HNH we understand that improving the quality of school meals is a critical step in
building a healthy future for our children. (www.hnhcater.com)
Rushia has long subscribed to the theory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr when he said: “Everyone can be great,
because everyone can serve.” She is extremely active in the community, using her non profit organization
SerVcom International to improve communities by providing educational and enrichment activities for its
citizens. We are committed to implementing programs which enhance academic achievement, personal
growth, health and wellness, economic vitality, self-sufficiency, and good citizenship. Rushia has committed
herself to traveling nationwide to spread her PASSION Principles, where youth are encouraged to embrace
its 7 attributes: Perseverance, Attitude, Sacrifice, Set Goals, Inner Strength, Optimism, and Never Give Up . . .
districtwide model. Dr. Chase’s vision is to develop transformational leaders and transformational teachers
their children become stronger readers . . .
Thomas “Hollywood” Henderson
Sports writers describe Thomas “Hollywood” Henderson as an outrageous,
witty and talented athlete. He was a first round draft pick for the Dallas
Cowboys and an All-Pro Bowl linebacker...One of the best linebackers
in NFL history, in fact. He has been called one of the most flamboyant
football players of the seventies. Thomas, however, simply describes
himself as a miracle, because despite all fame, glory and talent, he was
also a substance abuser.
During his colorful seven-year career as a top NFL player, Thomas played
in three Super Bowls. On the field he could woo the crowd with his rare
talent. Off the field, he attracted the masses with humor and wit. This
combination of talent and flair landed him on the cover of a 1979 issue of Newsweek. He was one of the
stars of America’s Team. Alcohol and drug abuse, however, quickly brought his brilliant career to a stunning
halt. He lost it all. He lost his career, his family and his friends. Because of alcohol abuse and drug addiction,
Thomas even lost himself. Fortunately, in 1983, Thomas’ life began to change. Through therapy and the
twelve step programs, Thomas established a new way of living.
He has been clean and sober since November 8, 1983. Today, he travels the world, openly sharing his story.
He is a lecturer, an educational filmmaker and a promoter of recovery programs throughout our nation’s
criminal justice system. Thomas has also become a community philanthropist in his hometown of Austin,
Texas. As founder and chairman of East Side Youth Services and Street Outreach, he has built a stadium in
East Austin complete with an 8-lane track...all for the recreational enjoyment of East Austin youth. He is also
President and owner of Thomas Henderson Films, an educational video visual aid distribution company
that provides the incarcerated community with much needed information on prevention, recovery and
sobriety. Thomas has devoted his new life to the prevention of substance and alcohol abuse by helping the
youth and the incarcerated individuals of today understand that sobriety is an option.
Thomas is also the author of the best-selling book, Out of Control. His speaking tour has taken him to high
schools, college campuses, treatment centers, companies and prisons. Always an interesting and eloquent
speaker, Thomas willingly shares his firsthand knowledge of the pain, suffering and helplessness one encounters
in the midst of alcohol or drug addiction. He has been from the Super Bowl to the cell block with many
horrifying stops along the way. Today he is a new man sharing his story of hope, courage and change...one
Hilton O. Smith
The following is reprinted and updated from CallandPost.com
In business, we often think of the great pioneers who paved the way for
us to be where we are today.
We forget about the ones making history each and every day now.
One such great man is the Rev. Hilton O. Smith of Turner Construction.
The “Great Man” theory is a philosophical one that aims to explain
history by the impact of a single individual or heroes: highly influential
individuals who, due to either their personal charisma, intelligence and
wisdom or Machiavellianism, used power in a way that had a decisive
historical impact.
As former Senior Vice President for Corporate and Community Affairs at Turner Construction Company, Smith’s
duties include managing the company’s corporate affairs, minority and woman owned business enterprise
program, and their equal employment and educational programs. He coordinates business development
and strategic marketing programs with Turner’s senior executive officers as well.
Smith had actively led Turner’s efforts in awarding over $20 billion dollars to thousands of minority and woman
business enterprises. For four consecutive years, Turner reached the one billion dollar mark in the MWBE
utilization program.
He oversaw the national Turner School of Construction Management, which began in 1969, along with
Ann Tripp
Ann Tripp is the News Director of both WBLS and WLIB Radio. Ann
currently provides the twice hourly “news and views” on the nationallysyndicated
Steve Harvey Morning Show on WBLS and the once an hour
news update on The Erica Campbell Morning Show on WLIB, which is
also heard nationally.
Ann has long been known for her unique, “conversational” news
delivery…a style now employed by several other radio and television
news announcers.
Ann Tripp is the host of Healthful Solutions (on cable); she’s been a
narrator on certain Showtime Television specials and is the executive
producer, researcher and “voice” of the nationally-syndicated show Black History Minute (United Stations
Radio Network), where she profiles the historic, cultural, political and social milestones of African Americans.
Prior to this, Ms. Tripp was the news commentator on The Paul Mooney Show (WBLS) and before that performed
as both the co-host of The Global Village on WLIB and newscaster on The Doug Banks Show on WBLS….at the
same time!
Ann Tripp began her on-air career at age 14 at WNYC as an announcer, actor and singer on the weekly
variety show produced by the Police Athletic League. She graduated from City College, toured Europe for
a few years as a singer and then began her adult media career as a street reporter and on-air personality
on WHN (now ESPN), a position she held for 6 years. Tripp then worked at WNEW before moving to WKTU as
a news announcer and interviewer for the next eight years.
Ann Tripp next served as News and Public Service Director at WXRK (K-Rock) and then enjoyed a 13-year
stint at WRKS (KISS-FM) starting in 1987, where she was heard every morning as co-host of the top-rated Isaac
Hayes and Friends Morning Show, adding a “woman’s touch” through her bubbly personality, funny antics
and “on-target” one-liners. On weekends, she was a co-host of the highly rated political roundtable The
Week in Review.
Ann Tripp has taught broadcast journalism at the National Broadcasting Network and conducted media
seminars at Jersey City State College. Tripp is a member of the National Academy of Television Arts and
Sciences, the New York Press Club and the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s
Ann Tripp has received a Congressional Proclamation, three New York City Council Proclamations and has
been honored by the New York State Broadcasters Association for her domestic violence series. Ms. Tripp
has been awarded the Ida B. Wells Journalism Award, the Lincoln Center Award, Best Female New York City
Radio Newscaster, Outstanding Young Woman in America and most recently, The McDonald’s “Faces of
Black History” Award (2012) ,and the “Rosa Parks Award” from the Social Studies teachers union of the City
of New York.(2015).
She has been honored by Alpha Kappa Alpha and Zeta Phi Beta Sororities, Bellevue Hospital, the Boy Scouts,
Center for Physical Culture, The Caribbean-American Chamber of Commerce and Industry, The Network
Journal, 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care, Legends of Brooklyn, Safe Horizon and by Black Veterans
Where Are They Now
Honoree Year: 2014
Velvet Chestnut
Since being honored by the Trey Whitfield Foundation, I have been pursuing
my degree in higher education at Quinnipiac University in Hamden,
Connecticut. I wanted to make the most of this academic experience
joining several clubs, extra curriculums, and becoming an involved student
on my university campus. I am a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Fraternity,
Student Government, QTHON, and the Albert Schweitzer Institute. My
most recent endeavors include a six-month journey of traveling around
the world for the spring semester of my junior year. I began my journey
in Bogota, Colombia, representing Quinnipiac as the Student Leader of
Youth Delegates at the 16th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates.
Following this event, I set out to begin my semester abroad in Brisbane,
Australia studying at the University of Queensland. Study abroad has
allowed me to realize just how much I have grown over the years. Handling
trials and tribulations on the other side of the world without your family at
times can be difficult, but with a strong foundation you will get through
everything life throws at you. Trey Whitfield School and the Trey Whitfield
School Foundation provided this foundation; without this family, I would
not have come as far as I am today. Thank you for believing in me, and
congratulations on your Sliver Anniversary! . . .
Honoree Year: 2008
Alexandria Farrell
Alexandria is Brooklyn native who has committed to living a life driven
by purpose. She is a proud alumna of Bethlehem Baptist Academy, now
the Trey Whitfield School, Dublin School and a distinguished graduate of
Agnes Scott College where she completed an accelerated Bachelors
degree with honors. In 2008, she was honored by the Trey Whitfield
Foundation as an Academic honoree. Since then she has continued to
set her sights on a series of achievements personally, academically and
professionally. In 2009, she was accepted into the highly competitive
INROADS program and later completed internships with The Federal
Honoree Year: 2003
Ashley Farrell
Ashley is a proud graduate of Bethlehem Baptist Academy, now the Trey
Whitfield School. Ms. Farrell was honored by the Trey Whitfield Foundation
in 2003 while she was attending Dublin School, a college preparatory
school in New Hampshire. She was introduced to Dublin as well as other
schools and summer camps through her relationship with the Trey Whitfield
School. These experiences and her education at TWS helped to develop
an academic and personal foundation that significantly influenced
her outlook and work ethic. Upon graduating from Dublin School in
2006, Ms. Farrell attended Vassar College, a small Liberal Arts college in
Poughkeepsie, NY. She graduated from Vassar in 2010 earning a Bachelor
of Arts in Psychology, with a minor in Africana Studies. She went on to work
at an investment management firm as an Office Manager and Research
Assistant for several years and currently works in midtown-Manhattan
at an executive search firm as a Research Associate. The Trey Whitfield
School, as well as the Trey Whitfield Foundation helped to shape her desire
to give back and serve her community. In her spare time, she is a volunteer
and coordinator with Citymeals on Wheels and she previously served as a
Board Member of the INROADS New York alumni chapter . . .
Tiffany Goodwin
I am extremely grateful to have been one of the selected few honorees at
the Trey Whitfield Foundation Annual Banquet in 2010. My scholarship helped
me purchase my freshman year textbooks and supplies and encouraged
me to further pursue higher education. I obtained my Bachelor of Science in
Business Management and minored in Marketing at Manhattan College in
Riverdale, NY. Iíve held positions in the Public Relations and Digital Marketing
industries. Iím currently an Event Coordinator at Web.com (formerly Yodle)
where my passion for events and my education in Marketing unite. In May
2017, I recently graduated with distinction and honors from Mercy College
with my Masters in Business Administration (M.B.A), with a concentration
in Marketing. I plan to apply my higher education to levitate my career
and personal growth. I continue to seek challenges that require me to be
innovative, strategic, and adaptable. Looking forward to what the future
holds for me! . . .
Honoree Year: 2009
Jemila Grant
I am a proud yet humble Trey Whitfield Foundation honoree of 2009. Since
my acceptance of the award, I pursued my Bachelor’s of Science degree
in Health Care Studies with a concentration in Community Health. I have
been fulfilling two of my greatest passions in life, educating and giving
back. I spent two years working at Harlem Children’s Zone fostering and
leading programs focused on promoting healthy lifestyles within lowincome
communities at risk of obesity and other detrimental health issues. I
live by the famous mantra spoken by the great Maya Angelou ìWhen you
learn, teach. When you get, give.î I have made it a part of my life journey
to allow people to see the greatness within themselves. As a current Family
Planning Health educator working for Community Healthcare Network, I
work with low-income families to ensure they are educated about their
health care options and are empowered to make informed decisions in
regards to their care. The Trey Whitfield Foundation scholarship provided
me with the financial support to enhance the start of my college career. I
was able to purchase my first laptop which was used throughout college
and recently passed down to my younger brother who began college this
past year. As I continue to benefit personally and professionally from the
work I do to educate my community, I plan to pursue my Masters . . .
Honoree Year: 2009
Clebreya Parris
I have had the honor of being an honoree of the Trey Whitfield Foundation
in 2009. The Foundation helped me kickstart my journey starting with
college. I attended Ithaca College where I received a Bachelor’s in
Public and Community Health with a Health Sciences concentration. After
graduation, I decided to take a year off before applying to graduate
school. I have always had an interest in the medical field and so during
that year, I got my certification in dialysis. I currently work for Davita, Inc
as a nationally certified hemodialysis technician. I enjoy my work and I
have been with the company for two years now. Dialysis isn’t something
to be afraid of, as the public has been led to believe. Through dialysis I
have decided to pursue a career in nephrology. I now attend Fairleigh
Dickinson University where I am seeking my M.D degree in the field . . .
with the mission of the Trey Whitfield Foundation, Sara has dedicated her
access to nutritious meals in all schools and reduce targeted unhealthy
food marketing to vulnerable groups.
She also volunteers with the DC Produce Plus program, which helps DC
residents in need access fresh and local fruits and vegetables at farmersí
markets. Prior to working at CSPI, Sara worked at the Food Recovery
Network as a New Chapter Coordinator, where she helped unite students
on college campuses to fight food waste and hunger by recovering and
donating perishable food that would otherwise go to waste . . .
Honoree Year: 2010
Chris Riley
Since Graduating Dublin School in 2010, I have gotten my undergraduate
degree in Special Education from Goucher College, where I was able
to continue to develop my leadership skills. In addition to just getting
my degree at Goucher, I worked with the men’s tennis team through a
number of building years, I held up to 3 editorial positions on the student
newspaper staff, and have also studied abroad. In the summer of 2013 I
was able to study abroad for a month in South Africa with 14 other students
where we taught reading and phonics in a rural and township school.
After graduating college I got a job working at a school in Towson, MD,
as a computer teacher. I was in that position for 2 school years until I was
moved to my current job in the IT department. I am also working towards a
couple of certifications within the IT field to one day own and operate my
own technology consulting business . . .
University of Florida’s Antimicrobial Resistance Research Program with the
North Florida Research and Education Center. I also plan to apply to North
Carolina A&T’s Master of Public Health with a focus on Veterinary Medicine
in the Fall of 2018. Thank you again for your contribution to my academic
success . . .
Honoree Year: 2008
Kristin Wills
I was accepted to North Carolina Central University School of Law and
started my journey in August 2014. I moved to Durham, N.C. holding onto
my Faith in God and that I was just a glimpse away from my dream. During
my Road to Justice, there were many, many Champions that I cannot
even name them all and some who I do not know, however, I would like to
thank God for giving me the desires of my heart, my parents, Matthew &
Angie Wills, my sister Cierra, and my grandmother Madeline Barnhill (GiGi)
for their love and support. I would also like to thank Janie Whitney & AB
Whitfield with the Trey Whitfield Foundation for believing in me and my
dream and planting the Seed of Hope. Finally, I would also like to thank
Ms. Barbara Jean Lee for being my #1 Champion and for advancing my
Dream of becoming an Attorney at age 24. On May 13, 2017, I graduated
with my Juris Doctor and will take the North Carolina Bar in July, 2017.
Please continue to keep me in prayer. I am truly honored to have been
a recipient of the Trey Whitfield Foundation Scholarship. Today, I become
the Champion for many Youth who aspire to follow their Dream and the
2017 recipients of the Trey Whitfield Foundation Scholarship. I encourage
you to never let the Dream die, keep it alive in your heart no matter how
difficult it may seem. The reward is in Journey and not the Destination . . .
Twenty-Five years of Recognition
On July 9, 1993, the first Trey Whitfield Foundation
support children and education. Just as important is
our goal to recognize and honor academic and adult
achievers. The objective is simple - demonstrate by
example how anyone can realize one’s dreams with
hard work and dedication as exemplifed by these
than two decades.
From the 1990s to the 2010s, we honored Earl Monroe,
