People basked in autumn sunshine and stall-holders were busy and upbeat. Lyttelton really is humming at the moment. Up the hill at Oxford St Reserve, the new skate park was a hive of activity as Lyttelton youths learned where they were allowed to paint in the new park – and had a crack themselves (see page 1). Los Angeles-based street artist Dcypher was there to help teach them how. He has designed and executed a new mural which showcases Lyttelton landmarks, native plants and birds and a skateboarder of course. Wednesday May 9 2018 News Council vows to stop flooding Marriner St complaints prompt action • By Sarla Donovan THE CITY council is promising action to prevent future flooding along Marriner St in Sumner. The Esplanade end of the street becomes blocked during rainfall. Last month it was completely flooded and the footpaths became impassable for most of the weekend. Rob O’Neill has lived on the street for more than 20 years Darrell Latham and complained to the city council after the recent event. He said the street’s drain outlet, located on Scarborough Beach, was buried under 150cm of sand making it impossible for the stormwater to drain out. Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community Board member Darrell Latham met with Mr O’Neill on Saturday to look at the problem. He said the city council needs to bring in diggers and clear away sand from the outlet prior to storm events, as it does for the main Sumner drains near Cave Rock. Last year almost 10 tonnes of rubbish was removed from the city’s rivers by volunteers. Residents’ associations, sports teams, churches and other groups will be working at different sites around the city. CHIMNEY FIRE Occupants of a house in Western Valley Rd, Little River, were woken by smoke alarms shortly after midnight last Thursday after a chimney fire spread several metres into the roof space. Little River Fire Brigade chief fire officer David Irving said they were able to get inside the ceiling and extinguish the blaze before it spread. It was unclear how the fire had started, he said. All four occupants escaped safely. LYTTELTON LAWN OPENING To increase the amount of open space in Lyttelton, the city council will install a removable fence this month between Norman Kirk Memorial Pool and the adjacent lawn to give access to the lawn when the pool is closed.
