Welcome
Music Educators,
Parents, & Guests
.Warmest welcome to the 2018 TMEA Tennessee All-State Performances.
While this event is an annual program for our state, many of the students you will be
hearing are participating in a Tennessee All-State Ensemble for the first time. But
whether it is a student’s first time or a return performance, it is a unique experience
that all students will carry with them for the rest of their lives. These young people
represent the future, not just in music but as leaders of their community and advocates
for music in our schools.
These young musicians are the best from across the state. They have rehearsed and
practiced for years to get to this place in their lives. The teachers and parents of these
students are well aware that most of these students excel in more than just music.
They are strong academically; they are school leaders, athletes, and volunteers; they
are the leaders of the next generation.
What you see on stage represents the finest in music instruction in Tennessee.
Hundreds of school music teachers, supported by their school administrators, have
spent countless hours organizing this program to provide the very best musical experience
possible in Tennessee. In addition to the dedicated and hard-working staff and
area chairs identified in the program, there are so many others behind the scenes who
have helped make the Tennessee All-State Ensemble experience possible.
To the parents of these students: Thank you for what you’ve already done to encourage
your child’s music pursuits.
To their music teachers: Thank you for the nurture and care you show your students
every day. There is no way to measure the impact you have on these students.
To our guests: The Tennessee Music Education Association is so pleased to have you
share in this musical experience.
And to these young musicians on stage: Students, please thank your parents and your
teachers for all they have done for you. Thank your friends and relatives for their support.
Congratulations to you for your achievements and for being where you are today.
– Johnathan Vest, Ed. D.
Tennessee All-State SATB Choir
Tesfa Wondemagegnehu, Conductor
Tesfa Wondemagegnehu, Director of Choral Ministries at Westminster Presbyterian Church
in Minneapolis, previously served as the conductor of The Radio Choir from American Public
Media and as the assistant artistic director of VocalEssence. As a high school teacher, he was
named Orange County Public School’s Teacher of the Year and received the Macy’s National
Magic of Teaching Award. During his tenure at Freedom High School in Orlando, he led his
choirs in performances at state conventions of the American Choral Directors Association and
the Florida Music Educators’ Association.
Wondemagegnehu is widely in demand as a guest conductor and lecturer. He has performed,
presented workshops, and conducted honor choirs across the United States, Canada, Germany,
Austria, Hungary, and Costa Rica.
Tesfa Yohannes Wondemagegnehu holds a Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting and
Vocal Performance from the Florida State University and a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal
Performance from the University of Memphis.
Tyler Merideth, Accompanist
Tyler Merideth became the first Orchestra Director at Montgomery Bell Academy in 2009.
Since then, the program has developed into three levels: Prelude Orchestra, Sinfonia, and
Chamber Orchestra. In spring of 2017, the Chamber Orchestra performed in MTSBOA’s
Performance Assessment for the first time in school history receiving an “Excellent” rating
in Performance and “Superior” rating in Sight Reading. Merideth began teaching AP Music
Theory at MBA in 2014. In the summer of 2016, Merideth began a week long annual summer
music theory class in collaboration with Nashville Symphony’s Accelerando Program. This
class incorporates movement and creative, outside of the box thinking to help overcome any
anxiety AP Music Theory might bring. Before MBA, Merideth taught music at John Overton
High School for four years.
Merideth has performed as an accompanist for Tennessee All-State Choirs and the Middle
Tennessee Suzuki Association since 2005. Some other notable performances include the
International Church Music Festival in England, recitals with cellist Wesley Baldwin, tenor
Brad Diamond, masterclass with violin pedagogue Brian Lewis and a musical theatre clinic
with the late Marvin Hamlisch.
Merideth served as the assistant director of the Nashville Youth Choir for seven years and has
been a clinician for the W.O. Smith Music School Summer Music Camp since 2009. In 2013, he
was the score reader for PBS’s National Broadcast of “Christmas at Belmont” featuring Denyce
Graves. He has also been a guest clinician for the Music City Youth Orchestra and honor choirs
in Tennessee and West Virginia. As a freelance composer, his works have been purchased
throughout the United States and around the world.
Merideth holds both a B.M. in Church Music-Piano Performance (cum laude) and a M.M.
in Music Education-Conducting from Belmont University. Merideth has participated in the
Summer Dalcroze Institute at Carnegie Mellon, the Kodály Summer Program at Belmont
University and performed as a violist in a string quartet at the Virginia Suzuki Institute. He
is currently a member of MTSBOA, ASTA and an alumni member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.
Symphony Orchestra
Jeffrey Grogan, Conductor
Jeffrey Grogan is an internationally-known conductor and teacher who has spent his career
dedicated to the pursuit of his craft and nurturing musical excellence among young musicians.
His humanistic leadership style, coupled with his command as a musical communicator, has
earned him an impressive reputation with audiences and music programs both in the U.S. and
abroad. Grogan considers his work with young musicians the cornerstone of his career.
After earning a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Stephen F. Austin State University,
he continued on to a Master of Music in Conducting/Horn Performance from the University
of Michigan. He then taught grades six through twelve in DeSoto, Texas. Expanding upon
this foundation, he became a college professor, teaching for over a decade at the University
of Michigan, Ithaca College and Baylor University where he taught conducting and trained
future music educators. He is also the former Associate Director of Bands and Marching Band
Director at the University of Michigan and Baylor University. Mr. Grogan takes pride in the
fact that his students now play in major symphony orchestras and are successful conductors,
teachers and citizens across the country.
Grogan serves as Director of Orchestral Activities and Professor of Music at Oklahoma City
University and Artistic Director of the Oklahoma Youth Orchestras. Previously, Grogan lived
and worked in the New York City Metropolitan area for eleven years. He served as Education
and Community Engagement Conductor of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, and as
Conductor and Artistic Director of the NJSO Youth Orchestras, the InterSchool Orchestras
of New York and the New Jersey Youth Symphony. His youth orchestras have performed to
capacity crowds at some of the greatest concert halls in the world, including Carnegie Hall, the
Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center and the Musikverein in Vienna. He has appeared as a guest
conductor at the University of Georgia, Indiana University, the Manhattan School of Music,
and the Mannes School of Music Pre-College Division. He has also conducted performances
with the Little Orchestra Society of New York, the Reno Philharmonic, Adelphi Chamber
Orchestra and the New York Concerti Sinfonietta.
In addition, Mr. Grogan was founding Artistic Director of two El Sistema inspired music programs,
the Paterson Music Project (PMP) in Paterson, New Jersey and the NJSO CHAMPS in
Newark, New Jersey. After only four years, PMP flourished from 30 students to over 300. These
programs have made a huge impact on these young people, their families, and communities.
Mr. Grogan has served as adjudicator, conductor, and clinician for many prestigious national and
international festivals including the Honor Orchestra of America sponsored by Music for All; the
Association for Music in International Schools Orchestra (Singapore); the National Orchestra Cup
at Lincoln Center; and the Honors Performance Series Orchestra and Band at Carnegie Hall. Other
recent international appearances include Harpa Concert Hall in Iceland; in Bangkok, Thailand;
and at the Opera House in Sydney, Australia. Mr. Grogan has also conducted numerous all-state
orchestras and bands throughout the U.S. including his home state of Texas, among others. He has
also enjoyed leading professional development workshops for school districts across the country.
Grogan is extremely grateful to the inspiring teachers he has learned from throughout his life
including Charles Gavin, Gary Lewis, H. Robert Reynolds, Gustav Meier, Stephen Peterson,
Larry Rachelff, Don Schleicher, Carl St. Clair, and John Whitwell.
