Welcome to Foyle Maritime Festival

The theme of this year’s festival is ‘VOYAGES’ in
acknowledgment of our city and district’s rich maritime
heritage and the journeys that we as a people and place have
experienced. It’s also in reference to the incredible voyages
the Clipper 2017-18 Round the World Yacht Race crew have
experienced, competing in this epic circumnavigation for almost
eleven months. This race is a test of human endurance like no
other with over half of each crew having little or no sailing
experience. We are honoured to play host to all of the race
teams involved.
As the first yachts arrive into the city to rapturous applause
from thousands of well wishers, Foyle Port will be transformed
into an international marina and the celebrations will begin. All
the seafaring action will be set to a spectacular backdrop of
live music, street performances, fantastic food and a surprise or
two...!

After travelling over 40,000 nautical miles around the world, the Clipper Race
Yachts return to the City for the homecoming party of the year. Join us on
Queen’s Quay as we give the Clipper Race teams the rousing welcome they
deserve. *Arrival date & times are dependent on race and weather conditions.

A limited number of tickets are available to purchase for this celebratory
evening with all of the race crew and their visiting family and friends. Tickets
cost £15 and can be purchased from the Clipper Race office, Waterloo Place.

RIVER FOYLE
The festival will bid an emotional farewell to the Clipper Race yachts as they
depart for their next official race start at Greencastle, Co Donegal. Join our
visiting crews for one last time as they complete the final stage of their epic
journey around the world.

Enjoy this beautiful riverfront
showcase event which will unfold
over two hours on and alongside
the River Foyle. A range of artists
have merged their visual, musical
and theatrical interpretations of the
festival theme to create a dramatic
production that will entertain and
enchant spectators.
The production will include a
beautiful parade of light on the water
with a number of boats, tall ships and
Clipper Race yachts. The boats will be
illuminated while a range of costumed
performers deliver a truly interactive
performance with movement, sound
and light all building to a thrilling
pyrotechnic finale as night falls.

SEAFOOD KITCHEN

‘Flavours of the Foyle’ shines a light on the wealth
of local seafood on offer in Northern Ireland - this
is local food at its best.
Enjoy a sizzling atmosphere as a range of local
chefs cook their signature dishes featuring the best
seafood of the region and celebrating the talent and
culinary skills that earned the city the accolade of
“Destination Delicious” at the Tourism Northern
Ireland Awards, following its Year of Food and Drink
in 2016.
Foodie fans can also enjoy several celebrity chef
demonstrations showcasing their mouth-watering
cuisine and entertaining spectators with their expert
knowledge to deliver a unique culinary experience.
The ‘Seafood Kitchen’ is located alongside the
Maritime Markets where you can try and buy the
freshest, finest regional produce available locally and
try those recipes out at home afterwards. A picnic
zone will be set up in this area, enabling you to dine
alfresco or simply chill out with the family and enjoy
the festival atmosphere and entertainment.

Seafood lovers are in for a treat with this popular
trail returning to the festival once again. A host of
award winning chefs will entice you into their domains
with a tantalising range of bespoke dishes celebrating

For the last two years Lush! have produced one of the most
spectacular events held in Northern Ireland. A phenomenal,
breathtaking event featuring the 65-piece Ulster Orchestra, worldrenowned
DJs and live vocalists playing floor fillers from the past
20 years - all produced in conjunction with Kylie Minogue’s musical
director - and the results have been simply out of this world.

RACE VILLAGE
Sponsored by DuPont Kevlar® in celebration
of 30 years of its engineering plant here in
the city, this new festival zone will explore and
explain scientific and fun facts about our rivers,
oceans and things maritime in an engaging
and interactive way. Why do tides exist? Where
does our drinking water come from? How can
we future-proof our marine wildlife?
A series of STEM shows, lectures and
screenings that investigate and celebrate the
science of water will be delivered daily in this
interactive area. Highlights include a Canadian
canoe being built in real time by the Driftwood
Canoe Club in association with the North West
College of Technology, a gigantic ‘Touch Tank’
featuring some of the marine life that lies
beneath the river surface and virtual canoeing
sessions.

Whether you are interested in sailing, kayaking, canoeing or just taking a trip on one of our
visiting boats, we have the activity for you at this year’s Foyle Maritime Festival! The Loughs
Agency, in association with the Foyle Maritime Festival 2018, have programmed a range of fun
and engaging on-water taster and tours for the public to participate in.*

This popular festival favourite returns again for another two
nights. Deck your canoe and yourself with lights and glow
sticks and illuminate the river as part of a large group that
receives a great welcome at the marina. A beautiful event
and a unique way to experience the river with Foyle Paddlers,
a local canoe club.
FOYLE SAFARI

Departs Loughs Agency at Prehen @ 9.30am, 12.30pm & 3pm.
Inish Adventures are offering River Safaris in 2
large open canoes, accommodating up to 24
people. The trips will depart from Prehen slipway
and take in the historic sights of Derry – from the
river! Allow around 2½ hours for the trip.

fancy taking a traditional yoga class
onto the water where your paddle
board becomes your yoga mat? No

to the River Foyle.

This new and exciting event has been developed for the festival by the Loughs
Agency in partnership with rowing, canoeing, sailing and open water swimming
clubs across the Foyle area. Live commentary will be provided for each of the
races with Prize Giving Events in the Festival Village afterwards.

to this years festival. These short motor tours on Lough Foyle will
be available to the public on one of this year’s Clipper 2017-18 Race
yachts. Hear about life on board these beautiful boats first hand from
the skippers and crew who’ve circumnavigated the globe on them for
the past eleven months. Enjoy the stunning scenery of Lough Foyle
on one of the eleven uniquely designed 70-foot yachts that make up
the world’s largest matched fleet of ocean racing yachts. A once-in-alifetime
opportunity for sailing and maritime enthusiasts alike.

This festival favourite returns once again with the memory
of its illuminated performance in the closing showcase event
of the 2016 festival. Star of countless TV and movie productions -
most recently ‘In the Heart of the Sea’, ‘Poldark’ and ‘Outlander’ -
the Phoenix was built in 1929 and is powered by a 235hp diesel
engine. Don’t miss this opportunity for a guided tour.
SAIL TRAINING IRELAND VESSEL
FRI 20th - SUN 22nd JULY THE DOCKS ADM: FREE
As part of our community outreach for the festival, Council is working
alongside Sail Training Ireland and Belfast City Council to deliver two
training voyages for 10 young people from both Derry and Belfast. The
first voyage will arrive in the city on Friday 20th July and a number of tours
will be facilitated by the crews and trainees throughout the weekend.
KASKELOT

Making its debut appearance at our festival, the Kaskelot is a threemasted
onwards**
barque and one of the largest remaining wooden ships in
commission - an important example of a noble, classic breed of Tall Ship.
*All of the visiting ships will be participating in ‘VOYAGES’ showcase on Friday 20th
and will not be available for public tours after 6pm.
**The Kaskelot will be open for public tours between 12noon until 5pm only on Wed 18th July.

FOYLE VOYAGES
SAT 14th - SUN 22nd JULY QUEEN’S QUAY 12noon - 8pm daily
Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Museum and Heritage Service
will take visitors on a journey through 9,000 years, exploring the migration
of people and the maritime heritage of Lough Foyle and the surrounding
area. Featuring original artefacts from prehistory to the present day,
visitors will learn about the first settlers, the bronze and iron age peoples,
the Plantation of Ulster and the subsequent growth of the port through
trade.
Find out more about the mass emigration of people during the 19th
century and the significance of the Lough in the eventual Allied victory
during the Battle of the Atlantic, culminating in the surrender of the
German U-Boat fleet at Lisahally. Join us on an interactive journey through
time on the shores of Lough Foyle. Suitable for all ages.

world’s finest flyboard riders cruise through the air along the
