GARDENING
ADVICE with
Not only can trees and shrubs provide numerous practical benefits
like shade and privacy, but they are also a wonderful way to soften
and transform unsightly spaces or views in the garden.
When planting shrubs and trees, always use plenty of Daltons
Compost and add in a Daltons Premium Planter Tabs to give them
the best start. With existing trees and shrubs, make sure to regularly
fertilise them to further enhance the health of the plant and its foliage.
ANSWER
QUESTION
Being a rebuild in Christchurch
we lifted, relocated and
replanted to our new garden,
all of our Buxus Sempervirens hedging on the same
site. Over the summer some of the Buxus hedging have
turned from a lush green to a rusty, orange colour, a few
have died off. Can you tell us why this is happening and
how to rectify this problem?
Today’s winning question came from
Cathie McGrath. Congratulations!
It is quite likely that a combination of factors has led to the problems you have experienced
with your transplanted Buxus Sempervirens.
Firstly, there is what is termed “transplanting shock”. While Buxus can usually be successfully transplanted, if the
young feeding roots dry out before the plant has become re-established, the foliage will often turn yellow, and then
bronze.
Secondly, if the plants become defi cient in nutrients, especially nitrogen, the foliage will slowly turn from dark
green to matte green, and then eventually to bronze.
Thirdly, while Buxus plants do not requires excessive watering, if they become dry over summer they will display
the symptoms you describe.
Do not be disheartened! Commence applications of a good quality, mostly nitrogen fertiliser such as Controlled
Daltons Goldcote Landscape and Garden in mid-October and continue applying through to mid-December.
Sheep pellets placed near the base of Buxus plants will also help promote strong growth and deep green coloured
foliage.
Keep up to date with landscaping
LANDSCAPING IS a wonderful
pastime enjoyed by many.
It provides a natural beauty
and needs no ornaments or other
attractive items to help achieve
its magnificence. What it does
need, however, is a little TLC from
you and great ideas to keep the
landscape design ever changing
and up to date.
Landscape design is an art that
not only gives you the freedom to
express yourself, but also makes
your home more beautiful and
inviting. There are many methods
of landscape design to explore. You
can trim your hedges or bushes in
a decorative manner. For instance,
you may want to cut every other
hedge a foot shorter than the next
to produce a rolling effect.
You could also put a large
decorative fountain in the middle
of your yard. This is a costly
option but, if you can afford it,
looks gorgeous.
If you are considering landscape
design, or have already dabbled in
it a bit, you know the importance
of working with an experienced
landscaper.
