April 2018

techerryhill @techerryhill www.templeemanuel.org Peggy and I are so honored to have been asked to chair our community’s “March of the Living Mission,” which coincides with Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) and culminates at Auschwitz Concentration Camp. As we join with thousands of participants from around the world, including members of our Temple Emanuel family, we will walk in the same footsteps that our people walked in as the concentration camp was being evacuated in 1945. April 2018 Nisan & Iyar 5778 For us, it will be a very personal walk, remembering family members we never met because of Auschwitz and places like it. We will, however, also walk with so much pride – pride in you, our vibrant living Jewish community at Temple Emanuel. It was three and a half years ago that I had a “Torah Moment.” The Torah was telling me …”you have to go back to Berlin, retrace the steps of your mother and mother-in-law, and on Kristallnacht, November 9.” At the time, I was convinced that I wouldn’t like it … the place … the people. Germany was the home my parents were forced to flee, and it was the death place of my grandparents and relatives. Yet, I was drawn there because I was looking for something. It was there that I realized why I made the journey and what I was seeking: namely, to claim, fulfill and complete my name. I began as a reluctant traveler, and ended up connecting with my name and other names. This mission is all about connecting with names. Each of us will be literally carrying a name of one innocent cut off before his or her time. One’s name is sacred, and nothing can destroy a good name. With our hands and our names, we will raise high their legacy. We will use our yad v’shem, our hand and our name for them. Without a doubt, our special mission will impact our lives profoundly, and we will return home enriched and ennobled. We look forward to sharing our experiences with you upon our return.
