May 2018

techerryhill @techerryhill www.templeemanuel.org May 2018 Iyar & Sivan 5778 At the end of May we will celebrate the festival of Shavuot, when tradition tells us that the Jewish People received the Torah. As we approach this holiday, it is a good time to reflect on the experience of Revelation to find inspiration and guidance from this peak experience. “Moses spoke and God answered him with a voice” (Exodus 19:19) at the time of Revelation. The Midrash explains that a divine voice came down from on high that was not only heard by all, but it was also understood. Each individual standing at the foot of Sinai heard exactly what they needed to hear in order reach understanding. So we learn that one of the miracles of Revelation was that every single person present, regardless of background, native language, life experience, physical or mental capacities, even regardless of age (yes, infants included!), each one understood Revelation. The Midrash’s reading is a radical affirmation of inclusion. It recognizes that while people learn differently and must be communicated with differently, understanding is available to all. The Midrash rejects the notion that certain people are simply incapable of attaining understanding. Everyone at Sinai took part in Revelation and from this, we learn that to be human is to have the capacity for spiritual experience. Religious life is open and available to all. Though the teaching is thousands of years old, the message of inclusion resonates in our modern day. It is inspiring to find one of the pillars our TE community embedded in this ancient text. This is why we call the Torah a “tree of life.” In generation after generation, we look to the Torah for guidance on the path of life. Chag sameach – have a joyous Shavuot!
