Feliz Día de las Madres
Happy Mother’s Day
Matos
Sometimes, having experienced difficult times during our childhood and
Yet, every day there are individuals who have chosen to overcome obstacles
and change lives for the better. Gloria Matos is one such person dedicated to
bettering the lives of our Hispanic, English Learners and Migrant students in
Gadsden County, Florida. After many years of serving our community and Hispanic
children, Governor Rick Scott honored her with the Award for Excellence in Primary
Education throughout the State of Florida. Knowing her, you would never have
thought she too might have had to overcome life challenges. Her story is one of
determination and service to bettering the lives of others. The following is just an
excerpt of how Ms. Matos overcame life’s detours to be who she is today:
A Bit About Conexión Media Group
By David Triana
I am writing this editorial after attending the Nothing but Networking event of the Greater
Fort Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce. It is a beautiful afternoon and we had a great time
networking at the Emerald Coast Science Center with over 50 people in attendance and some
delicious food by La Famiglia, the food sponsor for the event.
Networking is one of the most important things that anyone can do when you are either
involved in business or are in the non-profit world. MAKING CONNECTIONS with other
entrepreneurs and area leaders is critical to your success and something I highly recommend to
anyone that wants to have success in business.
This is also the reason that we, Conexión Media Group, created the Hispanics and Friends LINKed
(HFL) Networking Group. As far as we know, we are the only Hispanic entity that conducts
networking events/socials, similar to what the established chambers of commerce do. Most
of our HFLs have been quite successful and only this year, we’ve had them in Pensacola, Fort
Walton Beach, and recently in Pensacola Beach. You can find great pictures of our events in our
Hispanics and Friends LINKed group in Facebook. Our next event (see ad in this edition) will
take place at Chuy’s Gourmet Ice Pops & More, which is owned by Jazmina (Venezuelan) and
serves some of the tastiest “paletas” I’ve ever had. I hope you will join us.
I invite you also to read the blurb about our most recent accomplishment, the INTERNATIONAL
FESTIVAL Fort Walton Beach, which we planned, organized and executed just this past Sunday,
May 6th! It was a great success and we look forward to doing the 2nd one in April 2019.
NUESTRA COMUNIDAD
OUR COMMUNITY
May 6, 2018: It was a blessed and beautiful Spring day in the Emerald Coast
and the inaugural International Festival was a resounding success! More than
1,000 persons attended the festivities at The Landing in Fort Walton Beach
and enjoyed non-stop entertainment representing dozens of countries. This
Conexión Media Group event also included over 50 total vendors and delicious
food from over 10 nations. The event was co-sponsored by the Greater Fort
Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce and the City of Fort Walton Beach.
Additionally, the sponsorship of Gulf Power, Southern Star Immigration, Tienda
La Mexicana y Taqueria Destin, and Gulf Coast Immediate Care Center allowed
for the event to include high quality local and regional entertainment. Vendors
and entertainers from throughout the region participated, with some traveling
from as far as Mississippi, Alabama, Tallahassee, and Panama City. This event,
God willing, will now become one of the signature events of the Spring here in
the Emerald Coast! The event raised funds for One Hopeful Place and Special
Olympics Florida – Okaloosa County.
¿Para qué vas de
vacaciones?
buscan experiencias, quieren hacer
cosas que no hacen donde viven y
quieren compartir sus experiencias con
sus amistades de la red social.
El visitar nuestro paraíso significa
comer en restaurantes espectaculares
y probar nuestros mariscos. Desean
Ahora, a no
Tourism in the Gulf
By Martin Owen, Fundador, Owen Organization
Why do you go on vacation? Certainly,
it is to rest and recharge your batteries.
According to a multi-lingual friend of
mine a phrase like “All work and no play
makes Jack a dull boy” is used in many
different cultures, so getting away
from your usual routine is certainly a
good reason to go on vacation. Here
on the Northern Gulf Coast it’s usually
assumed that our visitors come for
the beach. After all our beaches are
beautiful! Ask the tourists and that’s
what they’ll probably tell you, but if
you delve a little more deeply, the
answers become more enlightening.
How many of our guests actually spend
all their time on the beach? Relatively
few, if truth were told. They come for
the food, the shopping, and yes, the
experiences. They come for the beach
lifestyle certainly, but there’s much
more to that than lying on the sand.
Tourists to the Gulf Coast are pretty
much three main types: families,
millennials (born between 1978 and
2000) and boomers (born between
1946 and 1964). The last two types
are the largest traveling groups and
they tend to arrive not only during
the school vacations, but throughout
the year. Both groups are looking for
experiences. They want to do things
that they can’t do in their day-today
life, and they want to share that
experience on their social media with
friends.
Matos a
Bautista Mexicano. En 1980, la Sra. Matos recibió un certificado en Teología;
nuestros hijos y familias!
Against the Odds! cont.
Gloria Matos was born on April 8, 1950. She was born in Cuba and married at
fifteen years old; she had her oldest son at 16. Her mother was Emelina and she
had to leave school in the second grade because her grandmother María died and
she had to take care of her two brothers and her grandfather Francisco. Emelina
married Ms. Matos’ dad Tomas when she was 32 years old. A year later Clarita was
born, who died when she was two years old of Meningitis. Ms. Matos was eight
months old when her sister died. Her parents were very sad.
Ms. Matos’ aunt Balbina, came to visit them, seeing them so sad, she took Ms.
Matos to her house. There they lived with Grandmother Flora. A one-month visit
turned into seven years. At age seven, it was time to go to school, and she did not
want to go. Instead, her aunt taught her reading, writing and math. Her aunt and
father had only a few years of school because her grandfather died and they had
to help her grandmother on the farm. Despite having left school early, her dad and
aunt had a lot of knowledge since they read a lot.
At seven years old, Ms. Matos’ mother came back for her because she said that
it was time to go to school. Returning to her house was not easy; everyone was
unknown to her. Contact with her brothers and parents was minimal. Ms. Matos
had seen them once a month. She went to a private school run by Catholic nuns
and was placed in the first grade. When they tested her, she was advanced to
second grade. Emelina, her aunt did a good job teaching basic skills. Ms. Matos
stayed until the government changed, and Fidel Castro took power. Castro had
received a lot of Catholic support and from other religious organizations, but upon
realizing that Cuba was going towards Socialism the church began to instruct its
parishioners of the danger with Socialism. The government expelled the nuns
and priests of Cuba and the private schools closed. The Cuban clergy were taken
to prisons and concentration camps to work. These circumstances resulted in the
decision to travel to the United States, Ms. Matos’ husband’s family had already left;
Ms. Matos’ family did not want to leave because they had hope of a change, which
has not been realized.
Pregnant with her second son Josue, Ms. Matos left Cuba in 1971 with her
husband Rolando Raúl Matos. After a few days in Miami, they arrived in New
York City where they lived with her mother-in-law and sister-in-law. Ms. Matos’
pilgrimage with English began. Her sister-in-law wrote what she had to tell the
doctor, English spelled as it is heard in Spanish. She spoke English as if she was
reading Spanish.
In 1976, they began their life in San Antonio, Texas studying at the Mexican Baptist
Institute. In 1980, Ms. Matos received a certificate in Theology; first in her class.
It was 17 years of living in Texas and Florida before beginning pastoral work in
1996 with immigrant workers in the counties of Gadsden, Liberty and Calhoun.
She obtained a job because she was bilingual. Seeing an opportunity, Ms. Matos
began the AmeriCorps Gadsden Reads program and started working as a tutor at
Greensboro Elementary School helping children and parents who had English as a
second language for two years. Followed as program coordinator for three years.
In 2000, Ms. Matos began her studies at the community college at night and
graduated with an Associate of Arts in 2003. In 2004, she enrolled in Flagler College
in Tallahassee, but for family reasons she had to quit. After living two more years in
Miami, she returned to work in Greensboro as a paraprofessional. That same year,
in September, she returned to Flagler College and graduated with a Bachelor of
Education certificate in May 2009, at the age of 59. Yes – 59 years old – it is never
too late to learn!
She is now a certified teacher in Pre-School Education, Elementary and Special
Education. God opened the doors for her at the Elementary School in Greensboro
as a Pre-School teacher; she was the only one who applied for the position. In
2012, she became a second-grade teacher because she was bilingual. Yes – being
bilingual does make a difference! She is still the only teacher who is bilingual. Ms.
Matos is passionate about her work with migrant and English learning children and
their parents.
Ms. Matos said, “I thank God for every person that has helped me to be what I am.
I once heard Dr. Maria Pouncey say that it was never too late to go back to school
and finish what you want to achieve. I followed her recommendation and other
people who always encouraged me”.
Thank you, Ms. Matos, for never giving up and being a role model for our children
and families!
3 Ways Social Media Has
Redefined Workplace
Communication
Today, more and more of our lives are chronicled online, a trend that will
only become more prevalent in the years to come as social media continues
to infiltrate every aspect of daily life. In many ways, we’re only beginning to
understand the impact of our increasingly connected existence and the effects
social media will have on the way we communicate with the world around us.
In the business world, social media is often seen as both a valuable asset and a
constant distraction. However, the companies that make an effort to embrace
technology and learn to grow with it will be better prepared to take advantage of
its potential as a powerful relationship-building tool.
We know more about each other’s personal lives
One of the stranger phenomena you may have encountered while scrolling
through your Facebook news feed is that even the quietest and most reserved
people often have no qualms about sharing their lives—warts and all—on
social media. People often live very different lives outside the office, and with
the proliferation of social platforms, it’s easier than ever to learn more about a
co-worker’s personal life. And, that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Of course, there
is potential that a co-worker’s life outside the office could be a source of conflict,
but in many cases, it can spark a conversation about shared interests, highlight
other skills and accomplishments, or help provide a deeper understanding about
what motivates people to perform at work.
We’re more distracted
Although this one can apply to the ubiquity of technology in general, for many
people, access to social media in the palm of your hand makes for an all too
easy distraction from work. According to a recent Pew Research Center survey,
34% of respondents said they use social media to take a mental break, and 27%
connect with friends and family while at work. Though not inherently bad, such
distractions can become a significant obstacle for companies struggling to
engage and focus their workforces. In fact, the survey also revealed that 51% of
respondents said their workplace has rules about using social media at work—
however 77% of that group admitted to using it regardless of the policies.
However, social media distractions aren’t entirely counterproductive. Results
from the Pew survey also showed that workers also use social media to make
professional connections (24%), solve problems (20%), and strengthen workplace
relationships (17%). The key is to encourage moderation by setting clear
expectations combined with some flexibility for social media use at work.
Celestial Connection
Y todo aquel
que vive y cree
en mí, no morirá
eternamente. ¿Crees esto? (Juan 11:26)
Hoy nos encontramos con una promesa
de Vida Eterna sustentada sobre la base
de dos condicionamientos:
1. Creer en Jesucristo
2. Ahora que tenemos vida.
No Morirás
Dicho de otra manera, podríamos decir
que ¡Ahora es el momento! ¡Ahora es la
oportunidad!
El texto del encabezamiento
inicia diciendo “Todo aquel”, indicando
El que cree en el Hijo tiene vida eterna;
Social Media cont.
We’re more informed about customers
Social media feedback is nearly instantaneous, and a business’ communication with
consumers has never been more targeted. Behind the scenes of every platform
are complex algorithms that help social media companies like Facebook target
promotional content custom-tailored to appeal to your interests and activities.
Businesses that invest in
understanding how to
use this kind of targeted
communication to
promote their brand are in
a better position to create
deeper relationships with
people who use their
products and build new
relationships with those
who don’t.
It’s also easier than
ever for consumers to
communicate with businesses—often very publicly. Research from rating company
J.D. Power found that 67% turn to social networks for customer service, with 33%
preferring social media to the telephone when reaching out for help or information.
In fact, many companies now employ entire teams to manage their social media
presence in response to this shift in the way consumers communicate with brands.
We’re Only Becoming More Social:
From the way we communicate at work to how we interact with family and friends;
social media is here to stay and will continue to evolve to become more intertwined
with our daily lives.
United for a Good Cause Inc., the “Little Engine
the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Emerald Coast,
this year’s conference was again a great
success!
The conference was held on April 21 and 25
students from the region attended.
It included a cadre of energetic local and
regional speakers and was kick-started by
a wonderful presentation by Jeremiah and
Joshua West, the Champions of Change!
Jeremiah and Joshua travel throughout the
United States and had just been in both
Kenya and Los Angeles in the last three
weeks before coming to the Conference
as the Keynote Speakers. They
stayed for the entire event, spoke
to kids throughout the day and
along with their family, were
instrumental, along with the
others in the outstanding cadre,
the volunteers and the MOST
AWESOME STAFF of the Boys and
Girls Club led by Dawn Novy.in the
event being successful.
At the end of the event, the
kids that attended were able to
say what they thought about
the Conference. Some of their
statements included: “It was an
AWESOME activity!”; “I learned that
no matter how many obstacles
I encounter, I must continue
forward with that in which I’m
passionate about”, among other
comments.
A parent of an attendee remarked
“I’m so glad I was able to bring
him, this was a great thing for
him!”
A huge thanks to all sponsors and
supporters for being behind this
project and a very special thanks
Thanks also to Pastor Jonathan
and for the wonderful things he
does for our area’s youth. Lastly,
a special thanks to Laila Rocha
Tourism in the Gulf cont.
SUDOKU
The object is to fill all empty squares so that
the numbers 1 to 9 appear exactly once in
each row, column and 3x3 box, and the sum of
the numbers in each area is equal to the clue
in the area’s top-left corner.
Coming to our piece of paradise means eating in spectacular restaurants and
trying all the amazing seafood; they want to shop in the outdoor malls and they
want to join in eco-tourism experience in the bayous. Artificial reefs are being
created along the coast so that our tourists can go on scuba diving trips in
addition to the incredible variety of fishing charters both in-shore and deep-sea.
It’s not just resort areas that are seeing this expansion of ‘experience tourism’.
Cruise companies are reporting that in the past, cruise passengers were happy to
stay on board ship, except for the traditional bus ride around local tourist traps
when the ship docked. Those passengers now want to pre-book excursions that
push the boundaries. These can be shark cage diving experiences in Hawaii or
visiting a local family to cook local dishes with them. It’s rapidly changing the way
cruises are being sold and organized.
As tourism expands we’re seeing the rise of multi-generational vacations. Not just
Mom and Dad taking their kids to the beach, but millennials traveling with their
grandparents. That can be a challenge as you can imagine, but both groups want
the same thing. They want to experience the unusual and then share that with
their friends back home.
At one time a hotel room was a highlight of the trip, or a condo was exciting.
Now—unless that room is a boutique hotel or the condo is simply stunning and
exceptional—the place to stay is just a commodity. Like the flight is just a way
to get where you’re going, unless the accommodations are offering something
special—an experience—it’s not part of the driving reason to travel.
The result is that we’re seeing a growth in spectacular hotels, boutique hotels,
and small, friendly bed and breakfast establishments that become a destination in
their own right. Restaurants are creating new menus and reinventing themselves
every couple of years. A restaurant that hasn’t changed its menu or decor in years
isn’t going to survive. Have you seen the seafood restaurants locally where your
fish comes with a barcode you can scan with your phone to see which captain
caught your fish, where, when, and the name of his boat?
The current tourist wants to search the Internet for the latest and greatest things
to do. Hence, the rise of the On-Line Travel Agents (known as OTAs) that sell only
the experiences. They’re on your smart phone and tablet so that when you arrive
to a destination, you can check out what the weather is doing that day, and then
instantly book your experience, pay on line and turn up.
Our vacations are changing faster and, in more ways, than you can imagine. The
emphasis is on experiences, not bringing back cheap and tacky souvenirs that get
packed in a drawer. The days of showing your vacation snaps to friends on your
return are over. You want to post on Facebook to say “This is me parasailing—live!”
Depresión
By Marcos Otero -
Gulf Coast Immediate Care Center, Fort Walton Beach
El tiempo es tan
fugaz…
tenemos problemas.
• Inquietud
• Fatiga o pérdida de energía
• Sentimientos de culpabilidad o de
menos valor
• Falta de concentración o dificultad
para tomar decisiones
• Aumento del consumo de alcohol
La depresión es una
enfermedad médica
grave que afecta
aproximadamente a
15 millones de adultos
estadounidenses. Los
síntomas de depresión
pueden durar 2 semanas o
más y ocurren casi todos los
días. Los síntomas pueden
incluir:
• Depresión la mayor parte
del día (tristeza, vacío, sin esperanzas
o al borde de las lágrimas)
• Pérdida de interés o placer en
actividades que disfrutó
anteriormente
• Pérdida de peso o aumento de peso
• Disminución o aumento de apetito
• Dificultad para dormir o cansancio
excesivo
• Pensamientos de muerte o suicidio
Si tiene alguno de estos sentimientos,
recuerde que hay tratamientos. Si
ya recibe tratamiento y aún tiene
estos problemas, es posible que
su antidepresivo no funcione lo
suficientemente bien. Si se siente
abrumado, agobiado o sobrecargado,
no espere para buscar tratamiento.
Depression
By Marcos Otero - Gulf Coast Immediate Care Center, Fort Walton Beach
Time is so fleeting… This month
a gentleman I knew as a friend and
brother passed away. It brought sorrow
to my heart, tears to my eyes, and
feelings of sadness. These feelings are
very common to all of us. We all have
sorrow after a death or a traumatic
experience. It is when the sadness
overwhelms us that there can be
problems.
Depression is a serious medical
illness affecting an estimated 15
million American adults. Symptoms
of depression may last for 2 weeks or
more, occurring nearly every day. The
symptoms can include:
• A depressed mood most
of the day (feeling sad,
empty, hopeless, or on
the verge of tears)
• Loss of interest or pleasure in
activities you once enjoyed
• Weight loss or weight gain.
• Decreases or increases in appetite.
• Difficulty sleeping or being overly
tired.
• Restlessness or feeling slowed down.
• Fatigue or a loss of energy.
• Feeling worthless or guilty.
• A lack of concentration or difficulty
with decision making.
• Increased alcohol use.
• Thoughts of death or suicide.
If you have any of these feeling there
are treatments. If you are already being
treated and still have these problems
your antidepressant may not be working
well enough. Do not wait to seek out
treatment if you feel overwhelmed.
proveedoras pertenecientes a minorías
al puesto No.10 entre las Mejores
NEGOCIOS & FINANZAS
Business & Finance
En Constante Evolución, Empresaria
de Publicidad Busca Apoyar Más a
los Negocios Pequeños
CHICAGO, 1 de mayo de 2018 /
PRNewswire/ -- La Kart Marketing se
complace en anunciar el lanzamiento
de los paquetes promocionales
económicos que tienen como fin
integrar redes sociales, contenido y
publicidad. Estos paquetes modulares
fueron diseñados para ajustarse a las
necesidades y al presupuesto de los
pequeños negocios, al igual que el
de los ejecutivos corporativos que
busquen desarrollar su marca personal
y promocionar su carrera de éxitos: bien
sea por publicar un libro, formar parte
de un consejo corporativo o dar una
serie de seminarios.
Paula Otero, fundadora y estratega
proveen.”—comenta Paula Otero.
promedio nacional, tienen tendencia
a ser más pequeños muchos de
ellos generan menos de $100,000 en
ingresos anuales.
siempre alentaron a ahorrar dinero
Latinos in Baldwin County
By Angela Grace Caine
The Latino worker
has always played
a major part in the
workforce of Baldwin county Alabama.
From the strawberry farms in the north
to the construction and hospitality jobs
in the south, lower Alabama would
simply not function properly without
its Hispanic workforce. Interestingly
enough, this demand for Latin
American workers remains high in spite
of any and all attempts at immigration
reform. Whether it be Republicans or
Democrats, it doesn’t seem to matter.
Both side recognize the valuable
workers that come from south and
Central America.
In addition, the economic developers
and job creators of Baldwin county
would like to be even more
aggressive in bringing new jobs to
their communities. In order to bring
more agricultural, manufacturing,
and hospitality jobs to the gulf
coast, Alabama will need even more
skilled and unskilled workers. Thus,
Hispanics of all kinds and skill sets will
be necessary to help drive Alabama’s
economic growth.
The downside is that the Latino
community along the gulf coast
does not appear to have the same
levels of support and representation
commensurate with their large and
ever-growing numbers. Their issues
are under represented on a local, state
and federal level. This causes the
Hispanic community to remain largely
vulnerable to things like discrimination,
injustice, poverty, fair access to
healthcare and isolation. In fact,
instead of Alabama Latinos becoming
a more visible part of the community,
it appears that they remain the “strong
but silent” community. This puts Latinos
at risk when they get injured, arrested,
or simply need help. The author of this
article has long represented foreign
nationals in the state of Alabama.
Whether it’s executives from Germany
who work at Mercedes or the migrant
farm worker from Guanajuato in Bay
Minette, our office has provided legal
support and advice to this community
for over 20 years.
A large part of our time is spent
educating Alabama elected officials
from City, County and State, to
judges, law enforcement and financial
institutions on the unique needs
of this important community. Our
services have included assisting in the
transportation of the deceased back
to their homes and families in Mexico
and prosecuting their wrongdoers
when they have injured or killed our
Hispanic brothers, as well as assisting
Latino entrepreneurs in setting up
small businesses and shops. Our office
has a unique understanding of what
it feels like to be an ex pat in the USA
and particularly in the state of Alabama.
We can assist our clients in English,
German, Spanish, and French, and more
importantly we understand crossborder
transactions and foreign legal
systems. Our goal is to provide seamless
support across all legal matters and in
all languages.
We look forward to continuing our
support of Alabama Latino citizens and
helping them fully integrate into the
fabric of Alabama life.
Inmigración
Immigration
¡No Te Confundas Con DACA!
Por Elizabeth Ricci, Esq.
El Juez Federal John Bates el 24 de
abril de 2018 emitió una orden que
deja de lado la recesión de DACA. La
persona designada por Bush, Bates,
básicamente dijo que la posición del
gobierno sobre la “ilegalidad” de DACA
era arbitraria y caprichosa. Bates, sin
embargo, mantendrá su orden hasta
el 23 de Julio de 2018, tiempo durante
el cual el gobierno debe justificar su
posición de que DACA es ilegal. Si no
lo hace, los elegibles para DACA que
no presentaron la solicitud deberían
poder hacerlo. No está claro si los
solicitantes de DACA nuevamente
podrán presentar documentos de
viaje.
entrar a E.E.U.U.
serios no deben presentar nuevas
Don’t Be Confused About
DACA!
By Elizabeth Ricci, Esq.
Federal Judge John Bates on April 24,
2018 issued an order setting aside
DACA’s recession. Bush appointee Bates
basically said that the government’s
position on the “illegality” of DACA was
arbitrary and capricious. Bates, however,
will stay his order until July 23, 2018
during which time the government
must justify its position that DACA is
illegal. If it does not, those eligible for
DACA who did not apply should be
able to do so. It is unclear whether
DACA applicants will again be able to
file for travel documents. The travel
document value cannot be overstated.
Those who entered once without
inspection and received DACA, if they
can prove a humanitarian, educational
or employment-based reason to travel
abroad (note that the reason must not
be “extraordinary” as some mistakenly
believe), could then do so with USCIS’s
permission. This means that their
previous entry without inspection is
waived which, in turn, would allow an
in-country adjustment of status instead
of having to go through the costly
and nerve wracking process of filing
an I-601a unlawful presence waiver,
leaving and reentering the US. Judge
Bates’ decision, therefore, gives DACA
holders and the immigrant community
hope that until Congress takes
comprehensive action to fix the broken
immigration system, those who came to
the US as children may have a reprieve
from deportation and contribute to the
economy by working legally. In the
meantime, interested initial applicants
without serious criminal histories should
not file new DACA petitions or pay
USCIS fees but should gather proof of
entry into the US before 16 and before
June 15, 2007 as well as enrolment
in/graduation from high school,
enrollment in/completion of a GED
program or enrollment in/completion of
a qualifying English class.
identificarse y abordarse incluso antes.
No
What is autism spectrum disorder?
Autism, or autism spectrum disorder, refers to a range of conditions
characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech
and nonverbal communication, as well as by unique strengths and
differences. We now know that there is not one autism but many types,
caused by different combinations of genetic and environmental influences.
The term “spectrum” reflects the wide variation in challenges and strengths
possessed by each person with autism.
Autism’s most-obvious signs tend to appear between 2 and 3 years of
age. In some cases, it can be diagnosed as early as 18 months. Some
developmental delays associated with autism can be identified and
addressed even earlier. Autism Speaks urges parents with concerns to seek
evaluation without delay, as early intervention can improve outcomes.
LIDERAZGO Y EMPRENDIMIENTO
leadership and entrepreneurship
¿Debo entrar allí?
Por Debbie Dodge - Traducido por Lessie Correa
Debemos enfrentarlo… trabajes
en negocios o no, siempre estas
anunciándote. Quizás quieres que tus
vecinos apoyen un evento local para
recaudar fondos o quieres ayudar a tu
confiada. Ahora, auméntale si eres
introvertido y eso es suficiente para
paralizarte y tratar de evitar salir de tu
casa o ¡hablar con otras personas!
Soy introvertida, pero sociable, así que
cuando necesito participar en una de
esas situaciones, simplemente preparo
mi cerebro ¡y me lanzo! Pero no siempre
he sido así. Antes tartamudeaba cuando
hablaba con gente que no conocía lo
que empeoraba la situación. Debido a
mi trabajo, necesitaba aprender como
comportarme y comunicarme con
otras personas, así que con el tiempo,
encontré unas cuantas estrategias
personales. Espero que éstas les sirvan
de ayuda a ustedes.
• Toma la decisión de entrar: Esto
parece básico, pero yo era muy buena
en convencerme de no entrar a un
evento tan pronto como llegaba. En vez
de eso, aprendí a decirme: “Me quedaré
sólo 15 minutos.” Y tenía la libertad de
salir cuando ese tiempo se cumplía.
Casi todas las veces me sentía bien y a
menudo ¡era la última en salir!
• Prepárate a
“enfocarte en otros:”
Antes de entrar en un
salón lleno de gente
que no conozco, me
preparo para poder
enfocarme en las
otras personas y de
verdad escucharlas.
Les pregunto: “¿Cómo
te llamas? ¿Dónde vives?
¿Cuánto tiempo has vivido aquí? ¿En
qué trabajas? ¿Qué te gusta más de tu
trabajo? ¿Tienes hijos o mascotas? ¿Qué
te gusta hacer cuando no trabajas? ¿Cuál
es el mejor lugar para comer desayuno/
sushi/Thai/italiano/etc.? A la gente le
encanta hablar de si mismos. Les hace
sentirse importantes, lo que la Sra. Mary
Kay Ash siempre indicaba: “Cada persona
lleva un letrero invisible que dice:
“Hazme sentir importante.” Tenemos el
poder de hacer que ¡cada persona que
conocemos se sienta maravillosa!
• Sonríe: Siempre sonrío en el espejo
retrovisor de mi auto antes de entrar
al evento. Esto me llena de energía
positiva. Y esta energía la comparto con
los que encuentro. Si no me sonríen,
• Fija tus metas: Cuando me entero
• Habla
contigo
misma/o:
Para aumentar
mi confianza,
pienso ¡Voy a ser
bienvenida donde
vaya! Saludo primero cuando conozco
a alguien porque sé que muchos
introvertidos como yo son tímidos y
agradecen si soy yo la primera que
saluda. Y lo mejor de todo… a cuántas
más personas saludo primero, más fácil
es hacerlo.
• Permanece enfocada/o: Esto
era difícil—porque a veces me
desenfoco—a pesar de que he tratado
mucho de estar en el presente y
mantener mi enfoque en cada persona
con la que hablo. Cuando uno escucha
atentamente, eso hace que la otra
persona se sienta importante (recuerda
#2).
escoger. Decide ¡cuál es mejor para ti!
De lo
que me he dado cuenta
es que cuántas más
personas conozco,
más rica es mi vida.
Aprendo de los
otros y mientras les
escucho aprendo
más sobre mí misma. Me hace más
fuerte lo que refuerza mi confianza. Veo
ambos ganamos. Siempre seré
introvertida, pero continuo cambiando
con cada persona que conozco. ¿Y el
mayor beneficio? Soy una persona más
completa ¡gracias a todos los que siguen
llegando a mi vida!
¿Están listos para aceptar a sus
introvertidos? Salgan de su zona
cómoda y enriquezcan sus vidas
conociendo a otros.
Must I go in there?
By Debbie Dodge
Let’s face it… whether you work in
a business or not, you are always
promoting yourself. Maybe you want
your neighbors to support a local
fundraising event or you’d like to help
your friend who just started a new
business in town, or you’re supporting
a local candidate running for office by
going door to door with flyers. In each
of these situations, it’s required that you
step outside your comfort zone and
speak to strangers… scary for even the
most confident people. Now throw into
the mix that you’re an introvert, and it
can be enough to freeze you in your
tracks where you’ll do anything to avoid
going out and talking with others!
I’m an introvert, but an outgoing one, so
when I need to be in a social situation,
I just get my head in the right place
and step forth! Yet, I wasn’t always
outgoing. I used to stutter and stammer
when speaking to people I didn’t know,
making it even worse. Because of my
work, I needed to learn how to be with
and communicate with others, so over
time I came up with some personal
strategies. I hope they are helpful to you.
• Make the decision to go inside:
This seems basic, but I was very good
at talking myself out of entering an
event as soon as I drove up. Instead, I
told myself “I’ll stay just 15 minutes.” And
allowed myself to leave after that time if
I wanted. Every time, I was just fine, and
often, was the last one to leave!
• Prepare to be “others focused:”
Before entering a room of people, most
of whom I don’t know, I get myself in a
head space where I’m “others focused”
and ready to truly listen. I’ll ask questions
to the person I’m speaking with, such as:
What’s your name? Where do you live?
How long have you lived here? What do
you do? What do you enjoy most about
what you do? Do you have kids or fur
babies? What do you like to do on your
days off? Where’s the best place to get
sushi/Thai/Italian/breakfast/etc. People
love to talk about themselves. It makes
them feel important, which as the late
Mary Kay Ash always said, “Everyone
has an invisible sign around their neck
saying, “Make me feel important.” We
have the power to make every one we
meet feel wonderful!
www.conexionflorida.com
• Smile: I always smile in the rear-view
mirror of my car before entering each
event. This gives me positive energy. My
smile also gives a positive impression
to everyone I meet. If they don’t smile
back, then they haven’t learned this
simple tip or they are having a bad day
and your smile can help.
• Set goals: When I know who’ll be at
the event, I decide who I’d like to meet
or connect with, and what I want to
accomplish. Maybe my goal is to meet
some potential clients. Or it could be
to just have some fun and make a new
friend or two!
• Self-talk: To help my confidence
I think of myself as being welcomed
wherever I go! I say “Hi” first when I meet
someone because I know that many
introverts like me are shy, and they are
grateful if I’m the first to say hello. And
here’s the cool part… the more people I
say “Hi” to first, the easier it gets.
• Stay focused: This used to be
tricky—as I tend to lack focus—though
I’ve worked hard to stay in the moment
and keep my focus on each person as
I talk with them. When I really listen, it
makes the other person feel important
(see #2 above).
• Start with the right event: If this
is new to you, perhaps a small event
would be easier than a larger one.
Yet for some, a larger event is easier
because you can blend in. You decide
which is best!
What I found is the more people I meet,
the more enriched my life is. I learn from
others and while listening to them I also
learn about myself. I become braver
which builds my confidence. I see that
people have issues just like me, and
when I greet them with unconditional
love and acceptance, we both win. I’ll
always be an introvert, yet I continue
to grow more comfortable with every
person I meet. And the biggest bonus?
I’m a better person because of everyone
who continues to come into my life!
Are you ready to embrace your introvert,
step out of your comfort zone, and
enrich your life through meeting others?
Unwritten Rules
Determine Teamwork
Success
In 2012, Google launched an internal
initiative called Project Aristotle with
the goal of pinpointing what makes a
great team at Google.
Project Aristotle researchers studied
a broad range of characteristics of
successful groups and teams within
the company, including personality,
hobbies, relationships with each
other outside of work, and various
demographic variables. Surprisingly,
the results showed there was no real
evidence that such characteristics made
a difference in a team’s success.
The major breakthrough came when
the researchers began to focus on
“group norms,” or the unspoken and
often unwritten set of informal rules
that govern individual behaviors in
a group. They found that the most
successful teams shared a similar
understanding and commitment to
how they interact with each other.
According to a New York Times article
about the Project Aristotle initiative:
“One team may come to a consensus
that avoiding disagreement is more
valuable than debate; another
team might develop a culture that
encourages vigorous arguments and
spurns groupthink. Norms can be
unspoken or openly acknowledged,
but their influence is often profound.
Team members may behave in certain
ways as individuals—they may chafe
against authority or prefer working
independently—but when they
| 25
Teamwork cont.
gather, the group’s norms typically override individual proclivities and encourage
deference to the team.”
It’s an interesting case study that highlights an important trend in organizational
development that focuses on group dynamics and building stronger, more
productive teams. In fact, in Deloitte’s 2017 Human Capital Trends Study, 32%
of respondents said they are redesigning their organizations to be more teamcentric,
which is also driving trends in performance management to “shift from
focusing just on an employee’s individual achievements to evaluating their
contribution to a team and the team’s impact on driving overall business goals.”
Just as important as focusing on the strategies that make a team work, is avoiding
the things that bring team progress to a screeching halt, including these common
workplace teamwork killers.
Undefined goals: A clearly defined, common goal not only serves as a target to
work toward, it also helps unite team members with an understanding of how
their hard work will affect the company overall. According to Gallup’s 2017 State of
the American Workforce study, “employees who strongly agree they can link their
goals to the organization’s goals are 3.5 times more likely to be engaged.”
Poor leadership: Great team leadership is an essential, but difficult skill to
master. In the Center for Creative Leadership’s The State of Teams study, some
of the top skills participants identified as essential to effective team leadership
include management skills, interpersonal skills, setting direction and building
commitment.
Lack of trust: In his best-selling book “The Five Dysfunctions of a Team,” leadership
and organizational development expert Patrick Lencioni writes, “… it is only when
team members are truly comfortable being exposed to one another that they
begin to act without concern for protecting themselves. As a result, they can
focus their energy and attention completely on the job at hand, rather than on
being strategically disingenuous or political with one another.”
Lack of accountability: According to Gallup, only “three in 10 employees strongly
agree that their associates or fellow employees are committed to doing quality
work.” Holding each other accountable to completing assigned tasks is an
important group dynamic that must be established from day one.
No two teams are alike, and what works for one may not be as effective for
another. However, taking a proactive, deliberate approach to building teams
based on the best use of individual member’s strengths and avoiding common
pitfalls goes a long way toward ensuring success.
