terrific care, long-term care
nurses play a number of
crucial roles, from mentor, to
advocate and from leader to
mediator.
They take care of a population
with complex needs and do so
by giving their all.
From May 7 to May 13, we
recognize their invaluable
contribution as we celebrate
National Nursing Week!
Our volunteers make such a difference in the lives of our residents
in long-term care at Bruyère.
They go for friendly visits, pilot the Cycling Without Age bike, organize
craft activities, help in the dining rooms… The list just goes on and on.
We recognized the invaluable work they do during National Volunteer
week, April 15 to 21.

The Ministry’s new comprehensive LTC Homes Quality
Inspection Program Performance Assessment Framework
places each LTC Home into one of the following four
categories: 1) in good standing, 2) improvement required, 3)
significant improvement required and 4) licence revoked.
We are proud to report that Élisabeth Bruyère Residence
is in good standing! Saint-Louis Residence has been
classified as level 2 (Improvement Required). Ten of the 26
homes in the Ottawa area are in this category. As you are
aware, we are completing an extensive improvement process
in the areas of policy, practice, management and care
delivery. Our goal is to be in good standing within the next
year.
In May 2015, SLR was the first long-term care home in the
Champlain Region and the first Francophone long-term care
home in Ontario to be designated as a Best Practice
Spotlight Organization (BPSO) candidate by the Registered
Nurses' Association of Ontario (RNAO).
On April 19, 2018, SLR proudly received their full BPSO
designation. SLR is committed to sustaining its efforts as it
utilizes the framework and strategies to continue to implement
more best-practice guidelines and enhance the quality of care
for long-term care residents.
Congratulations to our teams at RSL! Their efforts and
dedication to enhancing the lives of residents are being
recognized.

We are very proud to announce that two Ministry orders (regarding
menu planning and choice, as well as resident bed systems are now in
full compliance! Friday, April 20, we celebrated with a tropical party.

Recently, the Bruyère Centre for Learning, Research and
Innovation in Long-Term Care hosted a webinar entitled
"Cycling Without Age: Enhancing the Lives of Seniors-
The Right to Wind in your Hair", presented by Kim Durst-
Mackenzie (Therapeutic Recreation and Volunteer
Coordinator, Bruyère Continuing Care) and Gary Bradshaw
(Community Partner). The webinar discusses the purposes
and goals of the program, as well as the benefits and
challenges the Bruyère teams came across during
implementation at Saint-Louis Residence and Elisabeth

On March 19, Mrs. Marcelle
Sarault, volunteer at Saint
Louis Residence, received the
Sovereign’s Medal for
Volunteers.
This medal is an official
Canadian honour given by the
Governor General of Canada
in recognition of the
exceptional volunteer
achievements of Canadians
from across the country in a
wide range of fields.
