There will be plenty of non-stop excitement, fun
Each week campers will have a blast making
new friends and participating in enriching
camp at the JCC as campers go swimming and are
kept active every day.
Camp enrollment is broken out into three
different age groups. The early childhood camp
Young teens ages 14 and 15 looking
check out the Camp Aide and Counselor
Pool Guide
ATTENTION JCC OF SYRACUSE MEMBERS:
Please remember to use your membership card to enter the building on Saturdays and access the pools. Don’t
have a membership card? Stop by the Fitness desk to get yours, call 315-445-2360 or email info@jccsyr.org.
Welcome JCC Members
Are you ready for the
2018 outdoor swimming
season? The JCC’s
outdoor heated pools are
a great gathering place for
members and their guests
to cool off, relax and
exercise.
Make the most of your membership by using the
pool to its fullest this summer. Come swim after
work, on weekends with family and friends or after
early morning workouts. Incorporating the pool
into your personal fitness training will add a new
dimension to your exercise routine.
Pool rules
1. Upon entering the pool area, all swimmers must
check in at the lifeguard desk.
2. No swimming without a lifeguard on duty
3. No glass containers of any kind are allowed in
the pool area (food, beverages, lotions, etc.).
4. No food or gum is allowed in the pool area at
anytime. Beverages are allowed and must be in a
can, plastic bottle or paper cup. Please help keep
the pool area clean and free of bugs by promptly
placing all garbage in trash receptacles.
5. No running, pushing or boisterous play.
6. No urination, defecation, spitting or nose blowing.
7. Persons with rashes, open sores, inflamed eyes
and/or communicable diseases are not allowed
in the pool. Remove all bandages before entering
the pool area.
8. Shower before and after using the pool.
9. Diving is permitted only in the designated area at
the deep end of the large pool.
10. The decision of the lifeguards in all matters
concerning the pool and the enforcement of
these rules is final.
Children and the pool
1. All children under age 15 must be supervised at
the pool by an adult, sibling or babysitter age 15
or older.
Like last year, we’re offering several aquatics
programs throughout the summer (details on the
pages that follow). They include learn-to-swim
group lessons, private and semi-private swimming
lessons, and children’s pool parties.
Because the JCC pool is a members-only benefit
(guests are welcome when accompanied by a
member, see below), please remember to bring
your membership card to the pool and check-in at
the lifeguard desk upon entering the pool area. If
you have any questions or comments regarding
the pool, please contact us at 315-445-2360.
Thank you for being a JCC of Syracuse member.
We hope to see you pool side!
2. Children who are unable to stand with their heads
completely above the water in the pool’s shallow
end must be accompanied in the water by a
supervising adult, sibling or babysitter age 15 or
older, unless they pass a test with the lifeguard.
The test consists of swimming two widths of the
pool and treading water for 30 seconds.
3. Swimming accessories such as inflatable toys,
kickboards, water noodles etc. may only be used
in either pool with permission from the lifeguard.
Permission may be denied if the pool is crowded
or if items are deemed potential safety hazards.
4. No child is allowed in the small pool unless
accompanied by an adult, sibling or babysitter
age 15 or older.
5. The small pool is intended for non-swimmers.
It is not to be used as a play area by those with
swimming ability. At the lifeguard’s discretion,
older children may be asked to leave the small
pool.
6. Children who are not toilet trained must wear
disposable diapers and plastic pants or special
swimming diapers while in the pool.
7. Lifeguards have the final authority regarding
safety issues in the pool and pool area.
The world stands on three things
By Rabbi Andrew Pepperstone
Congregation Beth Sholom-Chevra Shas
During the early summer weeks, there is
a custom to study Pirkei Avot, a collection
of teachings by the early rabbis. In the first
chapter, Shimon the Righteous addresses
a particular question: “If the world were
compared to a three-legged chair, what
would be its three legs?” For
such a chair, all three legs
would be necessary or the chair
would fall over. What are the
three things without which the
world could not exist?
Environmentally speaking,
the world needs clean air,
clear water and clean soil.
Astrologically speaking, the world needs
to rotate on its axis, orbit around the sun,
and have the moon in its orbit. Without
any of these things, life on earth would be
radically different or physically impossible.
Shimon the Righteous had a different, less
physical, take on this question. He taught:
“The world stands on three things—
on Torah, on Avodah, and on G’milut
Chasadim.” What are these three elements?
What is Torah? Torah is the Hebrew
word for ‘teaching’ or ‘instruction.’
For Shimon, without the process of
internalizing one’s learning - from our
faith traditions, from the natural world,
and from each other - the world would
be unable to exist. Without
the pursuit of wisdom,
understanding and knowledge,
and applying that knowledge to
make the world a better place,
we would still be stuck in the
Stone Age.
What is Avodah? Avodah is
the word both for ‘work’ and for
‘worship.’ If Torah is about internalizing
what one has learned, Avodah is about
reaching out beyond the self in prayer,
which can take many forms. It can be
joining in song with a congregation. It
can be done in solitude in the woods.
It can be done in still quiet meditation.
It can be done while participating in a
march or rally for social justice. Avodah
is about seeing the world as it is now, and
envisioning the world as it should be. The
next step is going out to make the world we
envision into the world as it is.
What is G’milut Chasadim? G’milut
Chasadim is the Hebrew phrase for ‘acts
of lovingkindness.’ G’milut Chasadim
is about reaching out beyond the self to
others and doing good deeds: visiting the
sick, comforting the mourner, hospitality,
giving money, food, shelter or clothing to
those in need, and so on.
Shimon the Righteous is teaching us
that we need to be three-dimensional: to
reach inward with our learning, reach
upward in prayer, and to reach out to each
other with acts of lovingkindness. It is
the combination of these three elements
that make the world worthy of its physical
existence.
Adults and Seniors Program
JCC’s senior kosher dinners start up again June 18
By Ankur Dang
Each weekday at noon seniors come
together at the Sam Pomeranz Jewish
Community Center to have lunch. Some
of them do so after sweating it out in the
JCC’s gym or attending a group exercise
class. As an Onondaga County-designated
senior nutrition program, the tasty
kosher meals served satisfy a third of the
FDA’s recommended daily nutritional
requirements. The menu, which changes
every month, regularly features a variety of
popular dishes including meatloaf, brisket,
cornish hen, and more. What’s not to love?
Well, there’s always more to love,
especially in the summer.
The JCC’s Dr. Morton and Mrs. Libby
Maloff Summer Senior Dinner program
will be serving a well-balanced kosher
dinner every Monday starting June 18. The
weekly dinners start promptly at 5 p.m.
and a variety of live entertainment will be
included each week as a part of the meal
program. This summertime tradition will
run through August 28.
The summer dinners are open to
seniors age 60 and older. The suggested
contribution is $5. Registration is required
by the Wednesday before each dinner by
calling 315-445-2360. The JCC’s weekday
senior lunches ($4 suggested contribution)
will continue at noon Tuesdays through
Fridays during those weeks the summer
dinner is held. Lunch registration is
required by noon the business day before
the lunch.
“We are excited to be kicking off our
summer dinner program for seniors next
month,” said Marci Erlebacher, JCC of
Syracuse executive director. “The dinners
have become very popular and offer a
wonderful outlet for seniors to socialize
while enjoying a delicious kosher meal.”
The JCC’s Bobbi Epstein Lewis Senior
Adult Dining Program is the only senior
nutrition program available outside of New
York City serving kosher meals five days
per week. The program is funded in part
by the Onondaga County Department of
Aging and Youth and the New York State
Office for the Aging and Administration
for Community Living. For more
information, and to register for a lunch or
dinner, call 315-445-2360.
Senior dinner volunteers needed
Volunteers are sought to help serve Monday
evening senior kosher dinners at the JCC
starting on June 18. Volunteers age 13 and
older are welcome and should be available
starting at 4:45 p.m. Flexible weeks are
available. Students seeking to fulfill community
service requirements will receive
confirmation of volunteer hours served.
with this worthwhile community program,
Your guide to personal training
Have you ever walked through the JCC
and thought to yourself, “Well now what
do I do?” Or do you have an idea of what
you need to be doing, but are getting tired
I am applying for membership with the Jewish
Celebrate, honor and remember
To commemorate special occasions —births, birthdays, graduations,
anniversaries, weddings, Bar or Bat Mitzvah, or to perpetuate the
memory of a loved one—the JCC welcomes tax-deductible gifts to
one of our many endowments and special funds. The JCC will send
an acknowledgement card to the individual (or next of kin) in whose
name the contribution was made. Some of our funds are listed below.
type of health insurance plan, you can
workout at the JCC for little or no cost?
The JCC’s Neulander Family Sports
& Fitness Center is a
the SilverSneakers and
Silver&Fit programs for
seniors.
SilverSneakers is
an insurance benefit
included in more than
65 Medicare health
plans. Many health plans
from companies such as Humana, Aetna,
MVP, UnitedHealthcare and others, as
well as group retirement plans, provide
SilverSneakers gym memberships to their
insureds, at no additional cost. For further
information, visit www.silversneakers.com.
Silver&Fit is another gym program for
seniors that is similar to SilverSneakers.
Silver&Fit is offered
through various health
insurers including
Excellus BlueCross
