From the Editor...
Hi everyone
2017! Welcome back to a new year in Paremoremo. I hope you have
all managed a peaceful, fun filled break, and enjoyed whatever weather
was thrown at you.
Who knows what this year will bring. Last year seemed fairly ‘out there’
in a worldwide sense, and I can’t see this year being short of big news,
social media rants and shock-horror stories. To negate all that we’ll try
to keep it friendly and local, and concentrate on the good, not the bad
and the ugly.
To start off, I would like to thank local Rafe Parks, who has been bringing
his grandchildren to the annual Christmas party for the past two years,
and whose Revive-A-Deck van you may have seen running around Pare.
After seeing the condition of the front and back decks at Sanders House,
Rafe offered to clean them up for free and, along with helper, local teen
Sam Anderson, the pair spent four hours blasting and washing the back
deck with his own TimbaWash product, and it has brought it up like
new. Next stop, the front deck! For anyone thinking of sorting their
own timber decks - https://decksolutions.co.nz/.
Also, thanks must go to local Julie Milicich for donating a microwave to
Sanders House. Don’t forget that the House is available for hire during
the day, seven days a week. It’s ideal
for kiddies’ birthday parties, baby
showers, prize givings, Club, Church
or regular business meetings. It’s only
$20 per hour and it has to have one of
the best views in the city! Contact us
at sandershousepare@gmail.com for
further details.
Enjoy February everyone!
GARDENING IN PARE-DISE
It’s a bit warm!
Happy New Year to everyone – hope February finds you enjoying 2017 despite the mixed
bag of weather we’ve had already. As I write this in mid-January, I’ve done a lot of watering!
The Garden Group has two events to enjoy in February – and anyone is welcome to join
us. The weekend of 18 & 19 February is the annual Heroic Garden Festival – and seven
of the gardens are right on our back doorstep (four of these gardens are new to the
tour). I’ve found that this event is best shared with others – there are so many ideas to
discover, and carpooling is essential in most cases (along with sunblock, a hat and comfy
shoes!). Tickets are $50 for the weekend with unlimited access to all 22 gardens involved, Sid & Christine Miller, Coatesville
or $10 for single entry to one garden. More info is available in the brochure from the January NZ Gardener magazine or by visiting
www.heroicgardens.org.nz/ Please check what the story is with children as not all gardens welcome little ones – and definitely no
pushchairs. There are also a couple of bus tours on offer – which might be appealing as well.
The second event combines my other love – stitching, with a high tea/garden tour fundraiser for the Embroiderers and Lacemakers
Guild at one of our member’s gardens in Patumahoe, on Sunday 26th February. Margaret has a lovely garden – full of surprises and
interest, and Margaret is also a mine of information. Her microclimate is very similar to what a lot of us have here in Pare, and it’s
always a very enjoyable afternoon. The cost is $12, and definitely a carpool event.
If you are interested in either of these events, please email me at how-whitty@vodafone.co.nz for more details.
Not getting a lot of vege plants in during spring and early summer has meant that, sigh, I am not getting the joy of picking dinner
each night. Them’s the breaks. But the roses and lavender have been pretty good so at least I have something to look at. As long
as I’m diligent with careful watering there is still the opportunity to get some autumn and winter crops in now. Of course, with
brassicas (broccoli and the like) protection from white butterfly is a must to give your seedlings a fighting chance against being
munched, and to avoid a head of more caterpillar than vege later on – in about four months when they reach maturity.
Sowing and planting of leafy greens and carrots/radishes – still a bit too early for peas I would think – they don’t like it warm. Watch
out for blight and powdery mildew on tomatoes/potatoes and courgettes – get that milk/water spray out to protect the courgettes.
Make sure when you water, that you do it close to the base of the plant and avoid the foliage – also first thing in the morning is
better than in the evening. Like rust, blight and mildew never sleep!
If you’ve got back from holiday and some of your plants are looking very sad, cut back what you can and take out the worst. If there
is green life near the base of the plant then with a bit of a cut-back and some careful nurturing, you might bring your plant back to
life. At this time of year, especially if you are on tank water, hopefully you have mulched your garden within an inch of its life, so any
careful watering is maximised to best effect.
Any time is a great time in the garden – even in the coldest months (think glass of wine, nice fire, great garden books to get ideas
from) so enjoy what you have.
Happy Gardening, Sandy
P.S. My Polly Peony Project – well the deluge of rain in spring didn’t suit her personality so the flowers didn’t come forth but she
lived – just starting to go to sleep now so will protect the tuber for later in the year – and think about a better residence for her in my
garden. I did discover at the Children’s Christmas Party that I am not the only one with a peony in their garden – so fingers crossed
my fellow peony lover had better success!
CONFLICT MATTERS : DIFFICULT CONVERSATIONS - IDENTITY
Local mediator and conflict management coach William Hursthouse (see our local Business Directory) offers advice on dealing
with conflict
Last year we looked at “difficult conversations”; defined as any conversation someone doesn’t want to have. We can consider
any such conversation on at least three levels: facts, feelings and identity. Having previously briefly discussed “facts” and
“feelings”, we still need to cover off the last aspect: identity.
Difficult conversations can threaten or disrupt our sense of who we are. In particular, most of us like to believe at least three
things about ourselves: I am competent, fundamentally good and worthy of love. Having any of these questioned is akin to an
internal earthquake, we can literally feel “shaken”.
One of the main reasons for this is the habit to default to “all or nothing” thinking when under stress: I’m either competent
or incompetent, good or bad, worthy or love or unloveable which leaves us only two choices when attacked – deny anything
which is inconsistent with our own self image, or accept it and die inside. All parents have seen their children struggle with
these responses. At one extreme, refusing to acknowledge I made any mistakes makes a difficult conversation as impractical
as swimming without getting wet. At the other extreme, believing it is all my fault, that I am useless, incompetent and
unloveable is allowing a (relatively) small event to represent our entire sense of self. We all do exaggerate like this at times,
and no one presses our “guilt button” like those closest!
There are two steps to overcome this all-or-nothing thinking habit. The first is becoming aware of your own, personal identity;
where are you most vulnerable? The fastest way to answer that question might be to ask those who love you. Your partner
might be happy to tell you how you can’t stand to be wrong, or how you cringe at the thought someone you respect might see
you as mean. The second step is recognising the two extremes: “I am perfect” or “I am worthless” are falsely simple and we
don’t have to choose between them. For example, no parent can truthfully say: “I am always there for the children.” And no
one can say: “I am always a good listener”. We all contain constellations of qualities and characteristics, both good and bad.
Given that truth, what we can accept about ourselves is at least threefold: I have made mistakes and will continue to make
them; mine and others intentions are more complex than they appear; and I have contributed to the problem.
Remember, the other person’s identity is likely to be threatened by this conversation too, so take the time to think about how
(s)he is likely to react. Where are they vulnerable? Unless you are careful it might quickly become about what each person
thinks is being said about them, as a person.
SUSTAINABLE PAREMOREMO’S BATTERY RECYCLING
Those of you who receive the North Harbour News will have seen the article late last year about our battery recycling efforts.
We promoted the scheme in the Publisher throughout the year, and it has been very successful so far.
Faye Jobbitt and Andrew White are our volunteer coordinators who set the bin up at
the beginning of Attwood Rd in July 2016. It takes AA, AAA, C, D and 9 volt (smoke
alarm size) batteries, and Sustainable Paremoremo pays for them to go to Abilities Inc in
Glenfield, who recycle them rather than have them go in to the tip.
In October, after only four
months in action, there were
36.3 kg of used batteries in the
bin. As Faye said after she had
dropped them in to Abilities,
“It felt really good to see all
that NOT go into the landfill!”
Thanks to everyone who is
participating in this scheme,
Sustainable Paremoremo
will continue to fund it while
it can. The bin is one of our
old blue and yellow recycling
bins, and has a plywood inner
top that shows you what size
batteries can be accepted.
FRIENDS OF THE WHARF
The last weeks of 2016 brought us an early Christmas present in terms of wharf improvements. The planned repairs to Attwood
Road began quietly at the wharf end of the road. Before we knew it, and without consultation, the deep roadside drain was piped
with a concrete culvert, covered and sealed, providing a significant extra amount of turning space. Additionally, the roadside
parking spaces were metalled, rolled, and hopefully will be sealed. At time of writing, the work has proceeded further up the road
with a very neat and thorough job being done on soft patches, driveways and drains.
The burnt decking and framing from last year’s fire has been replaced, along with the rubbish
bin. We now have two large concrete bins and sheet steel on the shed wall to protect it from any
further fires.
With recent fine weather and high tides, the fishermen are back in droves so please do your bit,
whether fishing, boating, swimming or just hanging out, to keep the wharf a happy and tidy place!
YEP UPDATE!
YEP - Youth Employment Pare - has been running in the
community for a few years now.
Over this time we have successfully matched local willing
students (of secondary school age) with local residents
seeking assistance around their property, with babysitting,
gardening, computer work and general tidy ups.
With the New Year upon us it’s time to refresh the list of
students who are available for work. If you are keen to go
on the list please email me at yeparemoremo@gmail.com
for a registration form.
If you are already registered but your situation has
changed (e.g. you have left school or are no longer
available) please let me know.
If you are needing some assistance with a project please
get in contact. I will endeavour to find a local young person
who can assist you.
Coming up this year: We are looking at running a session
on financial skills for young people. Is there anyone in
the community who has the skills to assist with this
presentation? I’d love to hear from you!
ATTWOOD ROAD NOTICEBOARD
Toward the end of last year some idiot graffited the
noticeboard on Attwood Road, along with one of the signs
that was on the fence. The noticeboard was put up by the
Ratepayers and Residents Association years ago, but had
lately become covered in business advertising, as had the
fence that belongs to the Prison. It was decided that the
whole area needed to be tidied up, so all the signs have
come down, and some anonymous Samaritan painted the
graffiti out of the noticeboard. A big thank you to whoever
did that!
The board is now for community use only, not for business
advertising material, and the fence is a no-go area as the
Prison had never given permission for it to be adorned with
signage.
We are introducing a Community Forum meeting in 2017, which will be held on a Thursday
evening once a month, and will have minimal other business on the agenda. This forum will focus
mainly on inviting local groups to present to us on their activities, and be an open invitation at all
times for people wanting to speak to us, either as individuals or representing groups. We feel this
is worth trying to see if it works better for people who just want to speak to the Board and not sit
through the usual business on our agendas.
UPPER HARBOUR LOCAL BOARD
Happy New Year neighbours!
By the time you read this, the new Albany Stadium Pool
will have had its official opening day on 28th January.
Aucklandleisure.co.nz has the link to the new pool’s details
including opening hours etc. As with other Council pools,
entry for under 16’s is free. There will be some public art
elements introduced in the pool grounds and complex midyear
- something to look out for.
In addition to that, work on the Albany Hub in the Albany
Domain is underway, and now the framing is mostly up you
will be able to get an idea of the spaces. It isn’t a big facility,
but it will be much used and loved I am sure. We are hoping
to be ready for use end July, subject to the usual weather
permitting statements.
We are starting to gather ideas for our updated Local Board
Plan with a view to consultation May – June; the difficult
funding environment makes it unlikely we will be successful in
attracting funding for new projects when Council reviews its
Long Term Plan, but we need to make sure we are on the right
track with what we aspire to, and we will give it our best shot.
We are always arguing the case for amenity and infrastructure
in growth areas, and we never miss an opportunity to promote
The Avenue intersection project as a necessity. We are always
happy to hear from the community with ideas and problems.
Our Local Board meetings have
moved to Thursdays this year,
and we will have our business
meeting during the day.
SUMMER AND YOUR PETS By Lauren Browning, local veterinary nurse
Summer is a time to enjoy being outside. Yet it is also a time to be aware of the impacts of heat, sun, insects, and many other things
that can cause danger to our pets. We have the ability to control some of the environments we are in, but our pets don’t. You know
the saying, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Preventing things from happening is better, safer, and less costly
than treating something after it happens.
When the temperature rises, all pets are at risk of heat stroke, whether they are left in a hot car, set in a cage or tank that is in direct
sunlight, or even being wrapped in a towel for too long.
Some pets are particularly susceptible. Maybe you own one? Members of the brachycephalic breed - which are those with a
“pushed-in” face appearance - are inefficient at panting. Brachycephalic breeds include Persian and Himalayan cats, and in dogs,
common breeds are Boston terriers, Boxers, English bulldogs, King Charles Spaniels, Pekingese, Chinese Shar Pei and Shih Tzus.
Obese pets, too, are at risk because of the excessive panting they do to keep cool.
It is very important to be mindful of hot tar roads and pavements when out walking your pooch this summer, unlike us they can't
wear shoes and pavements can get super hot and end up scolding their feet very easily!
To help keep your pet cool this summer, check if their winter coat needs to be brushed out - especially dogs and cats with thick
fur. The problem is that dogs, cats, rabbits, and birds don't sweat as we do. They get rid of excess heat by panting, and sweating
through their feet.
Remember also that if your pet has light coloured fur be aware of sunburn (especially if your pet has a pink nose).
The following are preventive suggestions that can help you and your pets enjoy time outside:
Prevent dehydration and overheating by drinking plenty of water. The best prevention is to drink before you feel thirsty so access
to fresh water is vital. Pets who don’t have access to water are more likely to drink whatever they can find, including water from
puddles on the street or in a yard, which may be contaminated and contain antifreeze or other toxic chemicals. Have clean water
available for your pets at all times, and, if they’re outside, make sure the water is changed frequently and kept in the shade.
Prevent overheating and heat exhaustion. NEVER leave your pet in your car, even for a few minutes, in the summer. Temperatures
can rise within minutes even with the windows down. Plan walks with your pet in the early morning or evening after dark. And
don’t forget about their paws. If you can’t walk barefoot on the sidewalk, they shouldn’t be either. Try to find grassy and/or shaded
areas to walk, if possible. If your pet is accustomed to being indoors in air conditioning, they are more susceptible to the heat and
humidity. And outdoor pets need a safe, dry, and comfortable place to lay down in the shade, as well as plenty of clean, cool water
11
to drink. Heat stroke is a medical emergency—if you suspect it, get your pet to the closest veterinarian immediately.
Prevent accidents from happening in the dark. If you walk your dog after dark, consider using things like a reflective collar and
leash, a light on their collar, or a flashlight. There are many products that attach to collars or leashes to help light the way - it’s safer
for both you and your dog. Outdoor cats should also have reflective collars, and consider keeping a bell or some kind of noise
device on their collars to alert birds of their presence.
Prevent sunburn by applying sunscreen. Pets can get sunburned and develop skin cancer just like people. Pets at higher risk are
those with light-colored fur and skin. Protect your pet’s skin by using a sunscreen designed specifically for faces on exposed skin
areas, including the tips of the ears, the nose, and around the lips.
Prevent flea and tick bites. Flea bites can cause anaemia, and tick bites can cause paralysis - within five minutes of getting on an
animal fleas and ticks will start feeding and reproducing. Using a monthly preventive medication for fleas and ticks helps protect
your pet and also limits your exposure to these pests and the diseases they carry. Flea and tick products are made specifically for
either dogs or cats, and are not the same. Talk to your veterinarian about which preventive medications for fleas, ticks are right for
your pet.
Prevent loss by having your pet microchipped.
Summer offers more outdoor time and
opportunities for pets to become separated
from us. Microchips are an inexpensive and
easy way to help find your pet in the event
you are separated. Be sure to keep your
information updated in the registry so that if
someone finds your pet they’ll know how to
reach you.
Doing a few things to prevent problems,
accidents, and injuries is the best way to keep
your pet safe during the summer months. But
accidents can happen. Be sure to have your
veterinarian’s phone number and address of
the closest emergency vet clinic programmed
into your phone.
Happy summer!
WHEN DOES SWIMWEAR BECOME UNDERWEAR?
There is an advertisement on television that features a young man at the beach wearing only a pair of swimwear briefs – all perfectly
acceptable. As the narrative unfolds, our young man leaves the beach and heads towards town, still wearing just the swimwear briefs.
This of course disturbs the sensitivities of the townsfolk. The question is then asked, 'At what point do the swimwear briefs become
underwear?' - and offensive in the eye of the beholder. A similar question arises for institutional religions, of which Christianity is one,
in relationship to their belief systems.
Hugh Mackay, in his book, Beyond Belief, reflects on the human predisposition to want to believe. Mackay reflects that human beings
are more comfortable believing in something, even if it is incredulous, than living within a vacuum of meaning. His contention is that
the (existential) anxiety of not being able to attribute meaning, and through meaning, control, is too painful for us and people will
adopt beliefs, credible or not, to appease that pain.
Religion and churches leap at the opportunity to fill this vacuum with their own systems of belief which in
turn, to a large extent, become self-endorsing.
The swimwear advertisement is both pertinent and salutary for churches as they tout their systems of
belief. Whereas the benign swimwear became unacceptable underwear as it went from a beach context
to a town context, with religions, the beauty of faith (trust) can unnoticeably morph into beliefs which
unnoticeably morph into dogmas which can be as unpalatable to the ordinary townsfolk as the swimwear
briefs of the young man.
HEALTH BENEFITS OF LENTILS
Compiled by Lorraine Cameron
Low in calories and high in nutrition, lentils
are the perfect legume to eat in summer
salads and spreads. Also great in curries,
winter casseroles and soups for vegetarians
and those trying to reduce their meat
intake. Lentils are easy to cook, nutty and
earthy in flavour and have a high nutritional
value that anyone can benefit from by
incorporating this healthy legume into their
diet.
Eat lentils and reap their health benefits
including:
Lower Cholesterol- contain high levels of
soluble fibre. Lowering your cholesterol
levels reduces your risk of heart disease and
stroke by keeping your arteries clean.
Heart Health- a great source of folate (may
help reduce hardening of arterial walls)
and magnesium (improves blood flow to
increase oxygen and nutrients around the
body).
Digestive Health- insoluble dietary fibre
found in lentils helps keep things moving!
Stabilized Blood Sugar- the fibre they
contain aids in slowing down digestion and
stabilizing blood sugar levels. This can be
especially helpful for those with diabetes,
insulin resistance or hypoglycaemia.
Good Protein- lentils contain the thirdhighest
levels of protein over the range of legumes and nuts. 26% of their calories are attributed to protein.
Increases Energy- steady, slow-burning energy due to their fibre, and being complex carbohydrates. Lentils are also a
good source of iron, which transports oxygen throughout your body.
Weight Loss- contain virtually no fat. One cup of cooked lentils only contains about 230 calories, but still leaves you
feeling full and satisfied.
Available dried, ready to soak overnight and then cook, or conveniently ready-to-eat in cans, try them for a change. A
note of caution- “High Winds” could result the next day for all those who consume them!!
WARRING WITH WEEDS?
I have a copy of The Weed Control Handbook, given to me when we were Weedbusting a few years
back. If you are having issues with a particular type of weed on your property, I can scan and send
you the appropriate page from the book – it has four sections for each weed: Know It, Understand
It, Control It, Replace It. Email me at suspare@gmail.com .
I can’t guarantee it will cover every weed in the area, but it covers the more common types such
as Wandering Jew, Moth Plant, Jasmine, Ivy, Ginger, Brush Wattle, Convulvulus, Asparagus Fern,
Watsonia etc.
REAL ESTATE
New Year, and Paremoremo is again on sale with three new properties coming to the market in
Attwood Road and one in Te Araroa Drive. This brings the total number on offer to nine, which is the
most we have seen in some years and will, I’m sure, expose Paremoremo even more as THE place
to live.
One of the properties, a very private 8.9 ha section with 2 houses and the possibility to further
develop, is situated at 36 Te Araroa Drive overlooking, and accessing, Lucas Creek - a prime
property with so many options for a private home or future investment.
Further to rural subdivision by
Transferable titles, which allows for
subdivision by:
1. Creating additional sites
through protection of indigenous
vegetation or wetland identified in
Significant Ecological Areas
2. The amalgamation of donor sites
This is still in mediation and is expected
to take until late 2017 to conclude
(Auckland Council Unitary Plan
appeal update). So I advise anyone
considering this to do so with caution,
or better still, wait until there is greater
clarity to the situation.
Finally if you have, or know of, a large barn with land for sale please contact me ASAP
If you’re looking for some one to talk to about
property make sure you call me first
