2017 where two Indian royal families 

came together for a remarkable 

wedding celebration at Milap- The 

Umrao farms, Gurgaon. The couple 

followed closely the conventional rituals 

for their royal wedding.

Offically Engaged 

Engagement ceremony is commonly 

known as Tika ceremony. 

The engagement ceremony is an important 

pre-wedding ritual in Indian 

culture. The ceremony is so called 

because the bride’s brother applies 

‘Tilak’ to the groom’s forehead, making 

the engagement official. It is sort 

of an exchange of pledges between 

the two wonderful families. The Engagement 

of one such lovely couple, 

Rajat and Aditi was grand affair that 

took place on October 2 at 11:30 am 

at the Ritz Ambience Island, NH-8 in 

Gururgram, Haryana. Engagement 

was followed by a majestic Sangeet 

ceremony held at 2:30 pm where Rajat 

and Aditi exchanged rings. The 

period between the engagement and 

the marriage brings a bowl of mixed 

emotions, excitement, anticipations, 

nervousness, laughter everything 


all together for both the bride and 

groom to be. It is marked with many 

fun-filled activities, with both families 

bonding over food, shopping, 

and the entire wedding extravaganza.

ceremonies took place at the groom's 

home where the bride's mum-in-law

sister. The bride's arrival is considered 

to be the arrival of Lord Lakshmi 

according to Hindu holy belief,

One of the most important 

pre-wedding ceremonies which 

brought two individual, two souls 

and two families together is Roka 

ceremony. The meaning of Roka ceremony 

is as important as the ceremony 

itself. An official announcement 

of the consent of both Kanika and 

Abhinav was announced for getting 

married to each other. Both the families 

gather together for the first time 

and exchange sweets, gifts, dry fruits, 

etc. with each other and also blessed 

the couple who will soon be getting 

married. The family members performed 

Puja according to the Indian 

rituals and traditions in the presence 

of a holy priest who recites the holy 

verses and performs the rituals. 

2018 – Just Got Lucky !! 

Generally, the Roka ceremony is 

conducted at bride’s home .So, after 

the big scrutiny, they went on the 

conclusion to keep the occasion on 

12th March, 2018 at Kamal Mahal, 

The perfect evening began with the 

first ritual known as Tilak Ceremo- 

The couple would never have 

thought that they would reunite 

in one of the world’s 

most luxurious 5 stars and 

the most powerful and prestigious, 

chain of hotels, ITC Maurya, New 

Delhi. The Roka ceremony was organized 

at a magnificent hall with posh 

interiors which was divided into three 

spaces with soundproof separator popularly 

known as Kamal Mahal. 

Finally, the dream was coming 

come true when the Gorgeous Kanika 

entered the hall wearing beautiful 

Golden- colored gown embellished 

with glittering silver leaflets. She 

paired her dress with light make-up 

which gave a ravishing look along 

with silver jewels. And when the darling 

Princess Kanika met her handsome 

Prince Abhinav who was wearing 

a subtle dashing grey-colored 

suit, the book of their life just began 

writing its new page.

thali was decorated with saffron, 

kumkum and a diya. The ceremony 

symbolized the bride’s father’s acceptance 

of the groom’s hand for 

his daughter. This puja ceremony is 

conducted for the well being of the 

would-be couple as well as for initiating 

cordial and continued relations 

between both families. At the end 

to confirm the closing of the ceremony 

successfully, a coconut along 

with betel leaves and areca nut was 

exchanged between the two families.

My first question was, 

as usual, how did you 

get into this field and 

the answer was quite 

surprising for me as she said- "You 

will be amazed to know the complete 

process, after completing my schooling 

I did graduation from South 

Campus along with that I did DNIIT 

, then NTT for 2 years , MSC(IT) for 

2 years and thereon B(Ed) for 1 year 

and became a computer teacher in a 

school and then got married ! It was 

nothing related to beauty and makeup 

till then. 

After marriage as I was introduced 

to makeup, colors, eyelashes 

and other accessories in a natural 

transformation that any girl would 

have gone through. I was a happy 

giving makeover to friends and family 

without knowing and realizing 

that I was gaining confidence and 

was good at it. I left my job at school 

after 3 months of marriage to join 

my husband’s business of specialty 

chemicals. My in-laws were noticing 

this transformation in me and would 

often compare my work with the 

brides who got their makeover from 

professionals whereas I was enjoying 

this hobby, and I never charged anyone 

for it says Kanikka Gaurav Tandon. 

My Kid was 2 and my hobby 

was gradually turning into precision. 

I don't know how and why but my 

family came up with an idea to take 

this stream professionally. I was reluctant 

as my kid was too young and 

not evens an iota of my imagination I 

thought I would take this up. 

I researched all the courses 

around and found that Pearl Academy 

had the best offering for my 

interest. But here I was late, the last 

date of application submission was 

gone and I had postponed the idea to 

next year. My husband Gaurav Tandon 

said it never says never and went 

straight to the Dean of the Institute

at your work to show me 90% attendance 

and stand in top 3 in the first 

semester and I will waive off your 

Sponsored seat fee completely. I 

stood first in the semester with 98%

off, says Kanikka with a big smile on 

her face. Eventually, at the end of the 

batch, I was a topper and was awarded 

a certificate and trophy for Academic 

Excellence for the course. 

Since there are many options for 

makeup artists to work in fashion, 

freelance, movies, television how and 

when did you decide to come up with 

a prodigious setup like this? 

Kanikka : We wanted to open a 

commercial set up like we have done 

now but on a very small scale in 

around 500 sq feet but as we kept on 

hunting for places our imagination 

and thoughts of makeup area turned 

into a luxurious makeup studio in 

2700sq feet. I have worked for fashion, 

as for experience as well but with 

very selective people, since I was never 

a bread earner in the family; the 

only instruction I had to follow was 

to work on your own terms and only 

for your creativity. Since the idea was 

clear in the family that we will launch 

a setup like this, freelance took a back 

seat and I never got much into it. 

Tell us more about your setup: 

Says Kanikka : This is not a commercial 

setup by any stance; we could 

have utilized this space to make it a 

salon and provision of as many clients 

as we can book on a heavy wedding 

day. We freeze our day with 6 

brides in a given slot and no more 

bookings thereon. 

My senior artist has the same 

number to freeze the day. This is our 

gratitude in reciprocation of their decision 

to choose us on their very special 

occasion. We have ultra luxurious 

electronic card accessible rooms 

for brides to change, settle and get 

ready for the most important day of 

her life. I cannot imagine my bride to 

wait in a queue to get ready as this 

is her own day and she needs to be 

pampered. Moreover, it is about my 

creativity. 

I can give my best to 6 clients 

and I do not go over that. This day 

is more important for them than it 

is for us and we respect this. And we 

are very happy working with a limited 

number of clients and giving 

our best. When, instead of brides, I 

get calls and messages from grooms 

thanking me personally more often 

than not is my biggest achievement, 

Kanikka laughs out. They are not 

bound to do it you see. 

You teach as well 

Kanikka : Yes I teach makeup 

professionally as well as personal

in the morning. Our professional 

course is for 4 weeks. This is the 

best part of my day as I was a teacher 

initially but in a different stream. It 

comes naturally to me. I will tell you 

an instance a month back when we 

completed a batch and a student of 

mine called and said she got a job for 

50000.00 per month when she mentioned 

to the organization that she 

did a course from Kanikka Tandon 

Studio!! In 4 weeks of training if I 

can give women a platform to earn 

between 25000-50000 per month 

it’s the best thing I can do. Since the 

world is talking about women empowerment, 

this is our bit to the society 

and I make sure they have the 

skills and competence to survive in 

the industry. 

Where do you see your brand 

placed currently in the competition? 

Kanikka : Where is the competition? 

I don’t see any competition 

anywhere. I am a makeup artist and I 

will have people who prefer my kind 

of work and there are people who 

will prefer someone else’s work. 

I respect each and every individual 

in my field as they have not 

reached where they are without hard 

work and determination and creativity 

and I am sure like me everyone 

else gives his/her best. 

What are your dreams from here 

on when you see your work and setup 

being appreciated the way it has: 

Kanikka : Well our work is different 

and our dream is one step 

beyond that. My Work is to showcase 

my creativity with my brush 

and husband being the commercial 

director of the studio has the resolution 

to help an acid attack victim 

every year. We will look forward that 

we can do more than this for these 

girls. We have no commercial goals 

beyond this. We believe money is 

just a byproduct and has limited importance. 

We do discuss our social goals 

with people we know not because we 

want them to fund our goals, but to 

pass a message to do whatever they 

can do personally for any social cause 

close to their heart.

Let’s go out of trend this year, 

entirely stylish and glamorous with 

the innovation of Student Designers 

of South Delhi Polytechnic College 

for Women. They have explored 

and experimented on a new trend of 

“unstitched clothes” for providing an 

interesting texture and design which 

was showcased in the annual event 

at Ashima Chaudhuri Auditorium, 

South Delhi Polytechnic for women 

on 23rd March at 12:30 pm in the 

form of a fashion show. 

The name of the fashion show 

“BINA SUI DHAGA- UNSEWN 

GARMENTS” came from the concept 

of experimenting with the 

pre-existing clothing patterns which 

they have turned into a modish 

wardrobe with their hard work. The 

challenge had taken by groups of students 

who came up with the concept 

of unstitched and unsewn garments 

which are innovative, glamorous, 

stylish, and becoming a part of the 

trend in western culture. 

Prominent people like Sharon 

Lowen, Sonia Jetleey, Vandy Mehra, 

Rashmi Sachdeva, Ramola Bachchan, 

Anu Sikka, Mithu Sen, Samit 

Das, Alka Raghuvanshi, Nupur 

Kundu, Sudip Roy, Uma Nayar and 

Aruna Bhowmick were the guests 

present there and in front of whom 

the students showcased their talent. 

The unstitched clothes designed with 

techniques like matting, braiding, 

twilling which were providing interesting 

texture and design to the 

clothes. 

Braiding in cut pieces is a method 

of interlacing stripes in such a way 

that they cross one another and are 

laid together in diagonal formation. 

Such methods provide exciting designs 

and give birth to a new trend 

followed by using clothespin that was 

used to hang up clothes to provide 

them with various dimensions. The 

concept was indeed a challenge for 

Student Designers, who have overcome 

the limitations and produced 

exciting designs, worthy of applause.

Deeper the Mehendi, Deeper 

the Love Between the Couple 

trends into a classy, artistic genre. 

Latest trends in bridal henna designs 

is the incorporation of colors in between 

henna motifs, the addition of 

stones and blings, the inclusion of 

glitters or metallic dusts. Geometric 

patterns and white henna designs are 

also in vogue today. 

The henna needs to be kept on 

for a minimum of 4 hours for deep 

and uniform color. The longer the 

paste is kept, the deeper will be the 

color. The color actually intensifies 

depending on one’s body heat, so 

the henna-painted body parts can 

be wrapped in plastic wraps or foils 

to seal in the body heat. A mixture 

of lemon juice and sugar should be 

applied to the designs with a brush 

or light cloth at every 1 hour interval 

so that the dried Mehendi does not 

fall off and stays put ensuring better 

color. Another way to ensure better 

color development is to dry roast 

some cloves on a tawa and letting the 

hands soak up the smoke. The Mehendi 

should never be removed by 

water after it has dried and should 

be done by simply rubbing the hands 

together as the dried bits come off 

easily.

were in demand around

their expertise in Mehendi designs. 

Now Mehendi ceremony centers

The Conventional Custom 

The Mehendi Ceremony generally 

takes place the day before the wedding 

in the morning. The bride and the 

groom’s family observe this ritual 

separately at their own residences. 

It is traditionally a women-centric 

ceremony with the men of the 

family generally not participating. 

The outfits preferred for the 

ceremony are simple, in light colors, 

nothing too flashy. 

The venues are decked up with 

flowers and colorful draperies. The 

bride wears a light yellow or light 

green colored Lehenga or Salwar 

Kameez with short sleeves preferably 

and the groom wears Kurta Pajama 

also in light colors. It is not compulsory 

for the groom to wear Mehendi, but a little 

bit is applied on his hands and feet in simple 

dots or small designs. The ceremony also involves 

the application of oil on the groom’s hair. 

The henna for the bride’s ceremony has to arrive from 

the groom’s side along with some other gifts like fruits, dry 

fruits and sweets. 

Women of the house assemble and the Mehendi is either applied by one of 

the bride’s relative or nowadays by professional Mehendi artists. Designs are 

more elaborate and depending on what the bride prefers, the henna is applied 

on the front and back of her palm, forearm, till above the elbows, and on the feet 

till below the knee. Elderly ladies sing traditional Mehendi songs with dholaks 

and other musical instruments. Women relatives of the bride also get Mehendi 

applied 

to their hands, 

although the designs are not 

as elaborate as the bridal Mehendi. 

Popular Beliefs 

The Mehendi ceremony contains

Do This Exercise: Stand or sit 

straight, and tilt your head back as 

if to look at the ceiling. Hold your 

head still. Now touch your tongue to 

the roof of the mouth. You will feel 

a slight tingling pain in your neck 

because of the contraction of muscles. 

Now let go, and bring your chin 

down to your neck region. Repeat 

exercise in sets of five, holding your 

tongue for about 25-30 seconds. 

Double chin reduction 

A problem mainly faced by those 

who are on the heavier side can become 

a serious threat later on as they 

begin to loosen up. Try this exercise 

daily to shape up your chin and neck. 

Do This Exercise: Keeping your 

posture upright and your neck erect 

and press your lower lip over your 

upper lip. Now, smile and lift the 

corners of your lips. After this, using 

your palms, rub the underlying 

muscle as vigorously for a few times. 

As soon as you start feeling the hint 

of strain on your lower neck region, 

stop. 

Facial yoga 

This style of yoga helps to tone the 

muscles of your neck and face. It increases 

blood circulation and relieves 

tension in facial muscles. The key to 

face yoga is holding your breath in 

and then expelling air out in a manner 

which disciplines your face muscles. 

Forehead repairing 

Here is an exercise designed to reduce 

wrinkles on your forehead. This 

exercise will help you to find your

forehead. 

Do This Exercise: This is one of 

the simplest exercise that you can 

do anytime and anywhere you want 

without getting any questioning 

looks. All you have to do is make a 

surprised expression. Yes, act surprise

your forehead, widen your eyes as 

much as possible. Repeat this at least 

8-10 times and do it twice a day to

Flex your brows 

Eyebrows loose density and lack 

firmness with age. Sagging eyebrows 

would make your face look pale and 

dull. Escape the fate of aged eyebrows 

with this exercise. Do This Exercise: 

Use the tip of your fingers to 

hold your eyebrows from right below 

your brows. Now, put some pressure 

on your brows and lift them up and 

outwards with your eyes wide open. 

Hold this for at least 5-7 seconds. After 

this, use the muscles above your 

brow to press down against your fingers 

(again for 5 seconds). This will 

work well on the flexibility of your 

brows. 

Work those cheeks 

This particular workout helps 

to firm your cheeks. This exercise 

also helps to eliminate pouches on 

your face and laugh lines near your 

mouth. Do This Exercise: Separate 

your cheek muscles to the corner of 

your mouth using your fingers. Now, 

suck your cheeks in and lift your jaw. 

This will bring out the creases on either 

side of your face. After this, use 

both your middle fingers, placing 

them upon the creases to smoothen 

the skin. Repeat the movement for 

15-20 times. 

Chew a gum 

Chewing gums actually helps to 

fight signs of aging. When done in 

moderation, chewing gums tend 

to provide a steady and consistent 

movement of facial muscles. This 

helps to keep the facial muscles 

toned and makes the surrounding 

skin much firmer. It also helps in the

Hindu Weddings 

Weddings among Hindus in

countless disparities across the country when it comes 

to wedding rituals, among most Hindu communities, 

weddings are elaborate events with multiple rituals being 

observed throughout many days. The common theme of 

all different versions is the fervor along with a proclivity 

towards adherence to traditions. 

Also, the involvement of the extended family and 

friends are must in Indian Hindu weddings. There are 

certain common pre-wedding, wedding day and postwedding 

customs that are generally observed by all 

Hindus. 

Pre-wedding Riti-Riwaz 

As arranged marriages are still the primary style 

of marriage among Hindu, pre-wedding ceremonies 

are directed towards finding the perfect match for a 

prospective bride or groom's families. That is either 

through a family friend or a professional matchmaker 

or from a modern perspective through matrimonial 

sites. Even in the context where the couples who are 

going for a love marriage, the two families are to be 

introduced to each other and agree upon the finer points 

of the impending union. Most communities stress upon 

a horoscope matching before proceeding further on any 

decision. If the stars of the boy and girl are in perfect 

harmony, then the marriage discussions proceed further. 

The two families meet to discuss the finer details of the 

forthcoming event. A date gets fixed when the formal 

announcement of the wedding takes place. This is 

generally known as the Engagement ceremony Or Roka 

ceremony. 

Engagement or Sagai Ceremony 

Hindu engagement ceremony traditions vary across 

different states and ethnicities. There are various terms 

associated with it like Mangini, Sagai, Ashribaad, 

Nishchayam etc. Major cultural traditions across various 

provinces are outlined below: 

The engagement ceremony is known by many names 

– Sagai in Haryana, Roka in Punjab, and Exchange of 

rings may take place in some cultures between the bride 

and groom-to-be. But there is almost always an exchange 

of gifts between the two families symbolizing acceptance 

of the match and as a gesture of welcoming into each 

other’s families. In most cases, the date of the wedding is 

decided on the day of the engagement ceremony. 

Generally, there is a gap of a few months between the 

engagement and the wedding for the families to prepare 

for the big day. As the wedding day approaches, there are 

few rituals that are observed like Ganesh Puja, Mehndi, 

Sangeet and Haldi. In most cultures, a puja is held by 

both the bride and groom’s families. The families pray to 

Lord Ganesha to remove all obstacles from the couple’s 

life path. 


Mehendi 

Mehendi is mostly a North Indian 

tradition where a paste of henna 

is applied on the bride's and groom's 

hands. For the bride, the designs 

are intricate, elaborate and artistic. 

Women in the family gather and 

get their hands on Mehendi as well. 

Nowadays other cultures like Bengalis 

and South Indians have 

also adopted this tradition of 

applying Mehendi before the 

wedding. The concept lies in 

the old saying that first, it's a 

symbol of "Shringar" which 

the bride officially wears 

and secondly, it said that 

darker the color of bride's 

Mehendi, the more is she 

loved by her husband. 

Sangeet 

Ceremony 

The Sangeet is a celebration 

of coming together 

of the two families in the union 

of their children Women of the family 

get together several days before 

the wedding day with dholaks and 

traditional instruments. The women 

of the house will prepare the bride 

for her wifely duties through simple 

songs, sometimes teasing her and 

some emotional at the same time 

conveying their love to her by surrounding 

the bride and sing traditional 

wedding songs generally called 

“Banna-banni” in north India. 

It is most popular among Punjabis 

and Gujaratis. The traditional 

Punjabi sangeet generally includes 

performances of Bhangra and singing 

of Gidda songs. 

Sangeet nowadays is celebrated 

with the union of both the families 

at a common venue. A grand stage 

is set where the performances take 

place. The choreographers teach 

trendy dance steps to the entire relative 

bandwagon. The relatives perform 

in pairs or in groups. Sisters 

and brothers from each side will 

generally dance in groups. Even the 

bride and the groom take part in the 

performance, dancing to romantic 

numbers. DJs are hired to create 

an ambiance where guest can dance 

their hearts out. 

Haldi ceremony 

In our Indian culture, Haldi or 

turmeric holds a special place of honor. 

It is known for its anti-inflammatory 

and other healing properties, 

because of which it has become popular 

as a medicine as well. And, one 

area where it holds the most important 

place is when it comes to Indian 

traditions. In Indian weddings, this 

amazing ingredient has an entire ceremony 

to its name. 

The haldi ceremony is the one 

in which a paste of haldi is applied 

on the bride and the groom’s body 

before their wedding. This ceremony 

is held at both the bride and the 

groom’s place, on the morning of the 

wedding day. In a few cultures, this 


ceremony is also held a day before 

the wedding, after the Mehendi ritual. 

Barat 

Barat is one of the most fun-filled 

traditions in the entire wedding ceremony. 

It is basically the procession, 

which proceeds from the house of 

the groom, towards the wedding 

venue. The procession is attended 

by all the relatives and friends from 

the groom's side. The groom sits on 

a decorated horse or an elephant to 

reach the venue. Recently, we are 

witnessing elite cars taking the place 

horse and camels and elephants. 

The spruced-up groom is the center 

of attention as he is elaborately 

dressed for the occasion. The groom 

wears a turban with ‘sehra’, which 

is a flower veil over his face before 

his departure for the venue, Tilak is 

applied on his forehead. His sisters 

and paternal aunt feed the horse or 

elephant with sweetened grain after 

that, groom sits on the horse, followed 

by his congregated folks. 

Everybody dances on the tunes 

of the song and music played by the 

band accompanying them. On the 

arrival, all the followers of the barat 

are greeted by the people from the 

bride’s side. The mother of the bride 

applies tilak on groom’s forehead 

and performs aarti to ward off any 

evil. 

He was offered a token of gratitude 

along with the family members 

in the form of money from the bride’s 

side. After this, the groom leaves for 

the sight of Jaimala, for the exchange 

of garlands with the bride. 

Wedding Rituals 

Var Mala Ceremony 

Var Mala ceremony is the most 

crucial ritual of main day ceremony. 

It is also known as Jaimala and 

basically involves an exchange of 

garlands between the bride and the 

groom. Like all other customs and 

rituals, this is the most significant 

ceremony which finds reference even 

in the Vedic literature. 

It is an ancient practice and is still 

observed in India. The var mala ceremony 

takes place after the groom 

reaches the venue for the wedding, 

along with the barat. The Jaimala 

ceremony begins with the bride trying 

to put garland around the neck 

of the groom. This is prevented by 

groom's friends, in order to tease the 

bride. To enable the bride to perform 

the ritual, the associates on her side 

helping her to do the same. This is 

one of the most awaited moments of 

the wedding as everyone enjoys the 

tussle between the two parties as well 

as the new couple. Finally, the groom 

also puts the garland around bride's 

neck. This ceremony indicates that 

the bride has accepted the groom as 

her loving husband. 


Vivah rite 

Vows made in the presence of the 

sacred fire (Sanskrit: Agni) are considered 

unbreakable, with Agnideva 

(lit. God/Lord of Fire; c.f. Latin 

cognates: ignis+deus) held as both 

witnessing and blessing the couple’s 

union. 

Every Phera taken holds a specific 

meaning. Hindu marriage ceremonies 

involve elaborate rituals, 

one of the most important being 

the "saat phere” or the seven steps 

to marriage. This ritual involves the 

bride and groom circumambulating 

around the sacred fire seven times 

while the priest chants the holy mantras. 

According to ancient Hindu beliefs, 

marriages are made in heaven 

and solemnized on earth and once 

the marriage is solemnized, the two 

souls are joined by an unseen sacred 

thread for seven lifetimes. 

The seven vows taken during the 

Saptapadi are the seven promises 

which the bride and the groom make 

to each other to lead a happy and 

prosperous life. 

They are bound together by an 

unseen thread that is protected by 

these promising words. 

Kanyadaan 

The key step of Hindu wedding 

ritual is Kanyadaan. Other rituals 

vary according to regional cultures 

but this is the key step of a Hindu 

Marriage without which the marriage 

would be considered incomplete. 

Traditionally, the bride’s parents 

host the wedding ceremony and the 

groom and his family are the guests 

arriving from outside to the mandap. 

The whole wedding ceremony sort of 

depicts a story of the first meeting of 

the bride and the groom at the wedding 

mandap, the bride's parents giving 

her away to this worthy man. 

The couple commits to each other 

in front of the sacred fire followed 

by the couple taking the seven vows 

of commitment to the marriage and 

the friends and families blessing the 

newlywed couple. The groom arrives 

at the bride’s house and welcomed by 

the bride’s parents with an arti, then 

by giving a drink of milk and honey 

known as Madhu Parka ceremony 

and finally before he arrives at the 

mandap the bride’s father washes the 

groom’s feet. The bride arrives at the 

mandap and the couple lay their eyes 

on each other. These rituals are presented 

in various forms among different 

Indian communities. 

The father of the bride then gives 

her away to the groom in a ceremony 

known as Kanyadaan. The left hand 

of the bride is placed on the groom’s 

right hand and the bride’s parents utter 

the following words while giving 

her away ‘Today, the bride is Laxmi 

and the groom is Vishnu. By joining 

their hands in marriage, we repay the 

debt to our forefathers by continuing 

the next life cycle.’ 

Kanyadaan is considered to be the 

noblest act of offering that a person 

can perform and by doing it the parents 

of the bride are absolved of all 

their bad karmas. The groom accepts 

the bride’s hand and they promise 

each other that while pursuing a life 

of Dharma, Artha, and the Kama, 

they will remain faithful to each other. 

This is known as Paanigrahan. 

Next, the sacred fire is lit at the 

center of the wedding mandap and 

is considered to be the prime witness 

of the marriage rituals. The couple 

pours ghee to the fire as an offering 

and prays to the Gods for Santati 

(children), Sampatti (wealth & 

prosperity) and Deergharogya (long 

and healthy lives). This is known as 

the Vivaha Homa. During the Laja 

Homa, the bride's brother pours rice 

on her palms and the couple offers it 

to the sacred fire together. The ends 

of their garments are tied in a knot 


and they perform Agni Pradakshina 

where they make seven circles 

around the Sacred Fire uttering the 

promise to each other to be eternal 

partners and complement each other 

in life's journey. At the end of the 

seventh circle, the bride moves to 

the left side of the groom indicating 

that she is now part of his life. The 

final most important ritual in a Hindu 

Wedding is the Saptapadi or the 

Seven Sacred Vows. The bride takes 

seven symbolic steps while pushing 

a stone along the floor with her 

left foot while the groom assists her. 

They reiterate the aspirations of their 

married life as each step signifies a 

specific promise that couple makes 

to each other family duties and spiritual 

growth On completion of this 

ritual the marriage is concluded and 

the couple seeks blessings from elders 

of the families. 

Post Wedding Rituals 

Vidaai 

Post wedding rituals primarily 

comprise of Vidaai, the departure 

of the bride from her home to arrival 

at the groom's mansion generally 

followed by a reception. During the 

Vidaai ceremony, the family of the 

bride gives her an emotional sendoff 

and the bride throws back three 

handfuls of rice and coin over her 

shoulders to signify the end of her 

debt to her parents for nurturing her 

and wishing prosperity upon them. 

Warm Welcome to New bride 

On the arrival at the groom’s 

house, the new couple is welcomed 

by the groom’s mother, with a traditional 

aarti. The bride enters her inlaw's 

house by displacing a container 

filled with rice signifying that she 

is the spreader of abundance to her 

new family. 

She then dips her feet in a mixture 

of red vermillion and enters the 

house, leaving footprints on the floor. 

This ritual is practiced as the bride 

is considered as a form of Goddess 

Laxmi. This is followed by a number 

of games which are organized in order 

to make the newlywed bride feel 

comfortable and at ease with her new 

family members. 

Wedding Reception 

A reception is either organized by 

the bride's family after the wedding 

rituals have been completed to bless 

the new couple. 

Or in some cultures, it is arranged 

by the groom's family after the bride 

has arrived from her paternal home. 

The couple generally gets relaxed at 

this stage and is all set to celebrate 

the last extravagant event of marriage 

bandwagon with close friends 

and family.
