feasibility study by June 2019, with the hope
of beginning construction of the system as
immediately thereafter as possible.
This mandate has broad-based, bipartisan
support. Co-Sponsored by Assembly Member
Catherine Baker, a Republican representing the
16th District in the East Bay, Eggman pointed
out the value in reaching across the aisle to
Calif. Assembymember Susan Eggman speaking to the MH Rotary Club May 11, 2018
work together, regardless of party affiliation.
“We all need to work together to find common
ground,” she said.
Eggman touched on the many areas of focus she
has developed for herself, and her legislation.
Youth issues are at the heart of much of her
focus. She began by stating that she is working
to establish a California University within our
area. There are no public
universities within our 50
mile radius, she said.
Ms. Talamantes Eggman,
who holds a PhD in Social
Work, served as a professor
at Sac State for more
than a decade. She is also
a licensed therapist, and
served as a Medic in the
U.S. Army.
She started The Young
Legislators Program in
2015 which, according to
her web site, “is inspired by Assembly-member
Susan Talamantes Eggman’s belief that it is her
responsibility as an elected official to develop
the next generation of leaders”.
To say she is an active member of the state
assembly doesn’t even begin to scratch the
surface of the work she does.
She is the Chair of the Assembly Committee on
Accountability and Administrative Review, and
serves on the committees on Appropriations,
Business and Professions, Natural Resources,
and Utilities and Energy.
Her site states that “Susan previously served
as chair of the California LGBT Caucus, the
Assembly Agriculture Committee and the
Assembly Local Government Committee.”
As the Chair of the Women’s Caucus, she
addressed the issue of equality, with a glaring
observation. “Just 23% of the (California)
Legislature is comprised of women,” she stated,
while more than 50% of the people living here
are female. And, women are still only paid 71¢
to every dollar men receive.
She passed legislation, that Governor Brown
signed, she noted, that states the “Employers
can no longer ask what you made at your last
job”, pointing out that single mothers who are
not paid comparably to their male counterparts
then have difficulty feeding their families,
paying their bills, and living at a comparable
standard. When employers are allowed to base
a pay grade on what anyone, male or female,
made previous to the new job in question,
workers lose.
Ms. Eggman also shared a bit on the military-style
residential program she has partnered
on with Congressman Gerry McNerney and
Brigadier General James L. Gabrielli. Designed
to help at-risk teens receive a quality
education stayed on track with the announcement
of a lease agreement between the U.S.
Army and the California National Guard that
will bring the Youth ChalleNGe Program to
the Sharpe Army Depot in Lathrop. Assembly-member
Eggman stated that some 400 kids
have turned their lives around with the strict
commitment and requirements of this program.
She summed-up this particular cause with a
simple explanation. “We are human beings
who need that human connection.”
And, she made note of the latest news of the
day, that the California economy has surpassed
Great Britain to become the 5th largest economy
in the world, adding that We carry a lot
of clout.
Members of The Rotary Club of Mountain
House were very receptive to Ms. Eggman, and
appreciative of her taking the time to share so
much with the group. She was not campaigning,
but did bring a handful of yard signs for
any who wanted them.
The next scheduled Rotary meeting is Friday,
June 8, 2018. Confirmed guest speaker is Ms.
Veronica Vargas, a major driving force for the
creation of the commuter connector train Ms.
Eggman has helped make possible by way of
her legislation. Ms. Vargas, who serves as
Mayor Pro Tem for the City of Tracy, is also
Vice Chair of the Tri-Valley/San Joaquin Valley
Regional Rail Authority. She plans to share
the latest on progress on that initiative. All are
welcome to attend. The meeting will be held at
the CSD Board Room beginning at 8:30 a.m.
