Around the world in 80 days….<br />
Sun safe schools goes global!<br />
Since its launch just a few years ago the success<br />
of the Sun Safe Schools national accreditation<br />
scheme has gone from strength to strength.<br />
With thousands of schools signed up to the<br />
scheme across the UK, teaching hundreds of<br />
thousands of children nationwide. The scheme<br />
is fast gaining recognition as the reality finally<br />
hits home that the key to reducing the soaring<br />
rates of skin cancer is through education,<br />
education, education.<br />
There is no doubt that Sun Safe Schools is<br />
making an impact nationally, but Skcin are<br />
overwhelmed by the response we are receiving<br />
on a global scale. Currently over 100 schools<br />
from all over the world have also registered with<br />
the scheme and are using the comprehensive<br />
resources on offer to communicate sun safety<br />
within their school environment.<br />
Twenty of these international participants<br />
are from the UV capital of the world, Australia.<br />
This is quite an honour considering they are<br />
the most sun savvy country on the planet - way<br />
ahead of the game in recognising the vital<br />
role that schools play in the prevention of<br />
skin cancer and a generation ahead in terms<br />
of seeing<br />
their efforts<br />
realised.<br />
But it’s not<br />
just Australia,<br />
many<br />
countries across the globe with English<br />
speaking schools are finding us by the<br />
magnificent means of the world wide web and<br />
getting on-board, with over 30 schools in the<br />
USA registered and many more from around<br />
the world including; Austria, Canada, Chile,<br />
China, Greece, Malaysia, New Zealand, Portugal,<br />
Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Spain,<br />
Switzerland, Turkey, Uganda and the United<br />
Arab Emirates…. Phew, George has been busy!<br />
The global interest in Sun Safe Schools is<br />
testament to the quality resource provided by<br />
the Sun Safe Schools initiative, highlighting<br />
the importance of such a scheme to exist and<br />
grow. With interest from more than one of these<br />
countries to take the scheme national in their<br />
country… watch this space folks, we are making<br />
waves.<br />

Visit Southwell Minster<br />
There’s lots going on at Southwell Minster for<br />
children and families. Why not pop along and do<br />
one of our free trails, or download the children’s<br />
app to give you a tour of the Cathedral? We have<br />
an open day coming up on 7th July, when there<br />
will be guided tours of the Minster and tower, and<br />
some crafty activities for children. Also, we are<br />
pleased to announce the return of ‘Brickminster’,<br />
our popular summer Lego trail, this time telling<br />
the story of the site from the Saxons & Romans to<br />
present day, in a series of mini brick models. You<br />
can also join Robin Hood and the medieval jester<br />
for our family day on 30th July with a ‘Centuries’<br />
feel - all free, all welcome!<br />
<strong>Nottinghamshire</strong> YMCA<br />
<strong>Nottinghamshire</strong> YMCA has launched a new<br />
sports programme for 2-5 year olds. Young<br />
children will learn the fundamentals of a variety<br />
of sports with the support of their parents and<br />
qualified YMCA coaches.<br />
YMCA first sports, which will take place at<br />
the YMCA youth and community centre in<br />
Melbourne Park, Aspley, gets young children<br />
active and engaged in physical activity in<br />
an educational, non-competitive and fun<br />
environment. Led by experienced coaches,<br />
children are introduced and develop key skills<br />
learning through enjoyable sporting activities.<br />
Children are supported by their parents as their<br />
self-confidence and social skills grow.<br />
Sessions take place each Sunday morning at<br />
9:00am at YMCA youth and community centre.<br />

Nottingham Boys Choir<br />
was established 35 years ago. They are a small choir, singing<br />
a wide range of traditional and modern songs.<br />
Over the last year the boys have done a Summer and<br />
Christmas Concert, Evensong, and a private function for<br />
the Freemasons. Most exciting of all they did the Christmas<br />
advert for Games Workshop, a version of the 12 Days of<br />
Christmas. They are currently preparing for their next concert<br />
in June at St Helen’s, Stapleford. The boys love their singing<br />
but also love a good game of footie and going on outings,<br />
be it rock climbing, trampolining or their annual panto trip.<br />
